Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening narration of the film begins with the same words as the novel.

Answer: True

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" is one of the best known phrases in literature. While the rest of the books first paragraph was paraphrased in the movie, the basics are essentially the same.
2. What "shape shifting" character was missing from the movie but played a significant role in the novel

Answer: Beorn

Beorn was a shape-shifter, a man who could assume the appearance of a great black bear. He aided Bilbo and the dwarves on their journey and even fought in the battle of five armies.
3. What physical characteristic of Gollum was the most in contrast to his description in the novel

Answer: His size

Tolkien described him as a "small slimy creature" but in the movie he was portrayed as nearly 3 times the size of the hobbit hero. Later works of Tolkien specifically indicated that Gollum was once a hobbit.
4. Many of the songs in this film are adapted from the actual poems Tolkien wrote.

Answer: True

Some songs in the move are themed after events of the book, while others make direct use of Tolkien's words.
5. "Bless my toes", was a favorite phrase of Bilbo.

Answer: False

While hobbits have thick hair on their feet and toes, it was his "SOUL" that Bilbo constantly wanted blessed. Not his toes.
6. Other than his services as a burglar, what was the main reason the dwarves wanted Bilbo to join their adventure

Answer: He was the 14th member of their party

Gandalf was never considered part of the party, so Mr. Baggins was the "lucky number." Thirteen dwarves plus one hobbit.
7. Bilbo fought valiantly in the epic battle near the end of the film.

Answer: False

At one point before the fighting begins he proclaims, "Mr. Baggins, enough is enough" and disappears by use of his magic ring. After the battle he needed to ask Bombur who won.
8. A magnificent gem called the Arkenstone played an important part in the novel. It was also referenced in the movie.

Answer: False

All reference to the Arkenstone was eliminated from the movie. In the novel it played a major part in the demise of Thorin.
9. Famous for animated films, both traditional and stop motion, the film was produced by what prolific duo

Answer: Jules Bass & Arthur Rankin Jr.

They also produced many classic holiday cartoons such as as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
10. After the dragon left his lair and the dwarves took up residence in the Lonely Mountain, Thorin was proclaimed what?

Answer: King Under The Mountain

Thorin's grandfather was the original King Under The Mountain.
