Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene of "The Journey", one of the first images seen is a hand. To whom does it belong?

Answer: Charlie

The narration begins the journey through "Lost" where it began, on Oceanic Flight 815: "What if you are on a plane from Sydney to Los Angeles?". Charlie's hand (with a large, distinct ring pertaining to his band, which is later mentioned) was tapping and fidgeting nervously.

The Marshal's face was also shown, along with others, as the narrator claimed the passengers as, "A plane full of strangers."
2. Throughout the narration, how many times did the narrator say, "What if..."?

Answer: Ten

This type of narration made the "journey" very inviting to the viewers. The narrator continuously probed and questioned the audience for the answers which the characters were seeking.
He continued with, "You could be sitting next to anyone- a doctor, an addict, a prisoner" as Jack, Charlie and Kate were shown.
3. On the plane, two buttons on the ceiling were shown previous to the plane hitting turbulence. One said "No smoking" and was already lit. When the second flashed on, what did it say?

Answer: Fasten Seat Belt

As the fatal flight is in progress, two buttons were shown on the wall and the plane began to shake. The "No Smoking" sign was lit already, and the "Fasten Seat Belt" warning flashed on as an alarm buzzed. The narrator continued, "Now, what if something went wrong?" All at once the turbulence shook the aircraft and the oxygen masks were released as the plane began falling apart. Jack tried to reassure Rose, who was beside him, that "This is normal." Suddenly passengers were hitting the roof, the flight attendant's cart rolled down the aisle (nearly crushing Charlie) and the tail section blew off. Flight 815 was headed downward.
4. When Jack asked Kate if she wouldn't mind sewing him, she replied, "Of course I will."

Answer: True

The narrator continued, "And what if somehow- you survived?"
After the engine exploded amidst terrified shouts and screams of frightened survivors crowding the beach, Jack was alone in a secluded area surveying his wound. He called out to the first passerby, who happened to be Kate, and asked if she knew how to use a needle. Kate was very hesitant at the idea of sewing a person with a needle, but finally Jack's pleads convinced her. Eventually when he said she could do it, if she wouldn't mind, Kate did reply softly, "Of course I will."
5. The narrator says, "You are one of 48 survivors expecting rescue. Fathers, sons, husbands, wives. Most of them are scared, all of them are __________".

Answer: Waiting

As the camera pans down from the star-speckled sky to the makeshift camps surrounding the fuselage, we see Michael and Walt, Sun and Jin, and Hurley and Claire. Charlie wrote "Fate" on his fingers as Sayid, sitting beside him, wonders why no one had come for them yet.
Suddenly, all of the survivors gather to face the jungle as they hear the terrible monstrous howling. "And just when you're beginning to feel safe..."
6. Kate mentions a friend of hers, who was obsessed with Drive Shaft, to Charlie. What was her friend's name?

Answer: Beth

The next morning, the scene opened with an open view of the wavy blue ocean. The narrator asked, "What if you awake the next day and help still hasn't come? What would you do?"
Jack, Kate and Charlie head off on a hike to look for the cockpit. On the way, Charlie sings some of "You All Everybody" to Kate and she mentions how her friend Beth loved the band. Jack is uninterested, and urges them to move on.
7. The narrator says that, "You find you have ________ you didn't have before." What is it?

Answer: Time

Back at the beach, a closer look at the survivors interacting became clearer. The narrator went on, "You wait and you wonder, why are you one of the lucky ones?"
Boone asked Shannon, who was sunbathing in her bikini, to get up and help. Shannon refused, stubborn on the notion that help was coming, and Claire ironically asked if Boone was her boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Michael and Walt talk about the Spanish comic book and discover they have the time they didn't have before. (Michael later tells Jin that time doesn't matter on an island.) Hurley realizes, "You ask questions, and are surprised by the answers," when he finds out that and his friend and Sayid both fought in the Gulf War- on opposite sides.
Finally, a view of Locke sitting alone on the beach as the rain moves in concludes, "And the people you meet are not who they seem."
8. Before the cockpit was sent crashing down, those trapped inside managed to escape. Who grabbed the transceiver before exiting the plane?

Answer: Jack

As the trio cautiously navigated the inside of the demolished cockpit, the narrator warned, "What if you think you found a way to get help? But you realize this place is not what you imagined it to be?" Jack, Kate and Charlie found that the pilot was miraculously alive, and informed him that it had been roughly 16 hours since the crash.

The pilot said that the radio had gone out, and while heading back towards Fiji they crashed 1,000 miles off course. He said grimly, "They're looking for us in the wrong place." He showed them the transceiver, just before the monster made a vicious reappearance just outside the plane.

After a vicious attack, the passengers leap from the window (and Jack remembered to grab the transceiver on the way out) and ran through the rainy jungle.

When Kate later picked up the pilot wings pin, she saw a grim reflection in a puddle below- a body in a tree- and a grisly discovery up above.
9. As Sayid attempted to receive a signal on the transceiver, a small but distinct serial number was clearly visible just below the screen of the transceiver itself. What was this number?

Answer: ABT-520

The narrator describes the interactions which take place on the beach as the survivors begin to communicate more openly with one another: "Despite your differences, you begin to find common ground... to share... to trust... to hope." As Jin prepares sea urchin to offer to Hurley (who refuses) and Claire (who feels her baby spring back to life), Sayid explains to Kate the way in which he intends to receive and send a signal on the transceiver, if they can reach higher ground.
10. While on the beach, Jack tells Kate, "It doesn't matter who we were, what we did before this, before the crash. ______ days ago we all died- we should all be able to start over."

Answer: Three

As Sayid, Kate, Boone, Shannon, and Charlie headed out on a hike for higher ground to attempt to get reception on the transceiver, Sawyer gazed longingly at the letter which had remained in his pocket for two decades. The narrator intrigued, "You try to let go of the past, even as your future is uncertain."
Later, on the beach, Kate offered to tell Jack what she had done and Jack said that he didn't want to know. He explained how everyone had a chance to start over on the island, thus leaving behind who they were, as if they had all "died" three days ago in the crash.
11. How many survivors remained when Hurley conducted his island census?

Answer: 46

The narrator questioned, "What if your worst fears are realized? Your paranoia, justified? And realize that one among you is not one of you at all?" It was at this time that Jack's fears, Hurley's paranoia, and the realization that Ethan Rom was not on the manifest- and therefore, not on the plane- came to life. (An interesting fact was the way the narration interacted with the scenes and faces shown. Jack for the fear, Hurley for paranoia, and Locke for "one among you is not one of you at all".) There were, of course, 48 original survivors. Both the U.S. Marshal (chaperoning Kate) and Joanna, a survivor who had drowned, were off the survivor list when Hurley conducted his unofficial yet brilliant census, leaving 46.
12. When brainstorming his idea for building a raft, Michael told the somber group (Sayid, Shannon, and Jack) that, "We need a little ________ here."

Answer: Optimism

As Michael decided to take action and build a raft to escape the island, he confronted the group with his idea and was met with doubtfulness and disbelief. Michael first tried to encourage optimism, then retreated on his own. The narrator progressed with, "While you prepare to depart, others make their return." This was an interesting choice of words to use, describing "others" in relation to Claire's return from her abduction by Ethan, and therefore suggesting a connection to the "others" Danielle Rousseau had referred to.
13. Did Charlie still have tape on his fingers when Jack and Kate found him hung in the tree?

Answer: Yes

Although Charlie had left a trail of tape to follow ("The Journey" showed only the "A" piece that Jack stumbled into on a tree branch), it was clearly seen when Kate first saw him hanging in the tree that Charlie indeed still had the "E" piece on his finger.
Shots rang out as Charlie shot Ethan. The narrator replied, "What if you have no one to rely on but yourself?"
And the narrator added, "And your unspoken fears are finally expressed?" when Sun finally revealed that she spoke English to save Jin from Michael's rage.
14. Which scene from which previous episode, "Do No Harm", was NOT shown in "The Journey"?

Answer: Shannon questions Boone about where he goes with Locke each day, "Whatever The Case May Be"

"You're lost, you're scared, you're in danger." The final scene is the first time the hatch is discovered, as Boone and Locke continue on a trail through the dark and rainy jungle.
"You would do anything to get home." When Boone decided to turn back, Locke tossed him a flashlight and intended to continue on for the "sign". He didn't need to go any further.
"But what if you found a reason to stay?" From the moment the flashlight hit steel, the fate of Boone was sealed. Although Jack was seen later asking Locke about Boone's whereabouts, Shannon was not seen with him again until after his death.
15. Only one single reference to the polar bears was made in "The Journey".

Answer: False

It was interesting that this strange and important clue pertaining to the island was missing from the highlights of "The Journey". Not a single reference was made to the polar bear(s)- not even in Walt's comic book- and one never appeared in this episode.
When the final scene of "Do No Harm", the previous episode, was shown with Jack on the beach the narrator said, "What if you have failed, and your faith is lost?"
This suggests that perhaps the most prominent theme of "The Journey" is the loss, or grasp, of faith.
In the final scene, Locke desperately pounded on the elusive hatch. "But what if you have failed, and your faith-" and the light went on "-is restored?"
And so the "Lost" journey continues with those faithful enough to come along.
