Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which pious sounding actress played General Patton's wife, Beatrice?

Answer: Eva Marie Saint

Eva Marie Saint was born in 1924 and became a leading lady in blockbuster movies. She is perhaps best known for her roles in "North by Northwest" (1959) and her Academy Award winning performance in "On the Waterfront" (1954).
2. Did the Pattons enjoy a happy, loving marriage?

Answer: yes

The movie highlights their deep love for each other, despite suggested affairs on his part. Even in flashbacks to his youth, Patton reminisces about their courtship and early marriage, usually ending in a passionate kiss. After Patton is injured, she rushes to his bedside and reads to him or just sits, knitting, just to be near him.
3. In which European country was Patton stationed to assist in postwar reconstruction?

Answer: Germany

In hot water as usual, Patton came into conflict with General Eisenhower (Richard Dysart) about the methods used to help in the European recovery. Stationed in Bavaria, Patton employs Nazis to run things believing they would be the most efficient. The policy was that non-Nazi personnel only were to be used.

This added to Patton's frustration on top of finding an administrative desk job monotonous. He had expected to be reassigned to the Pacific theater to "fight the Japs".
4. What month of the year did the accident happen that ultimately led to Patton's death?

Answer: December

On December 9, 1945, the automobile in which Patton was riding was struck by an army truck driven by an impatient soldier. All the vehicles were waiting at a railroad crossing for a train to pass, but on opposite sides. Patton's driver had been distracted by Patton's conversation and turned into the path of the truck when the gate went up.
5. Besides his driver, who else was in Patton's vehicle when the accident occurred?

Answer: General Gay and a pet dog

Patton was sitting in the back passenger-side seat next to General Hobart "Hap" Gay (Murray Hamilton in his next-to-last acting role) and a large dog was in the front next to the driver, Private Horace L. Woodring (Ian Tyler). Patton had been sitting in front, but changed after a stop. Nobody in the vehicle was seriously injured except Patton who sustained two broken vertebra in his neck, paralyzing him.
6. What method was used to initially treat Patton's injury?

Answer: traction

A Crutchfield device (a hook was implanted in the top of Patton's skull) to which a wire was attached to adjust the tension. When a new doctor, Brigadier Hugh Cairns (Alan MacNaughton), was consulted on the case, he changed the traction to zygomatic hooks which were inserted under the cheekbones.

These doubled the amount of tension and were obviously more painful, but Patton never uttered a word of complaint. Eventullay these were removed and the doctors decided to place Patton in a neck brace.
7. Did Eisenhower visit Patton while he was hospitalized?

Answer: no

General "Hap" Gay did, however. Beatrice was very strict about which non-medical personnel were allowed to visit her injured husband. She was vehemently opposed to a visit from General Bedell Smith.
8. What ultimately proved fatal for Patton?

Answer: being put in a body cast

Orders came that Patton was not to die on foreign soil. The doctors said that to move him would be very dangerous, so in preparation, they decided to place him in a whole body cast. This caused him to start having embolisms, one that fatally ended up in his lung. Despite the orders, Patton was buried in Hamm, Luxembourg at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial.
9. According to the credits, who directed this movie?

Answer: Delbert Mann

Mann was a prominent director of TV shows, theatrical movies and TV movies. He directed the Academy Award winning movie "Marty" which starred Ernest Borgnine. After directing the TV movie "The Lily in Winter" in 1994, he retired and passed away in 2007 at age 87.
10. What was the last thing Patton said?

Answer: "Papa!"

Patton had been dreaming of his father whom he deeply respected. He had always regretted that he was not present when his father passed away. Patton suddenly awoke and uttered "Papa!" and the movie ended.
