The belly dancer was put in to show the cultural diversity of the 'Verse. Another thing to add to the flavor was Mal and Zoe playing Chinese Checkers.

2. When they leave the planet after the bar brawl, they fly awfully close to another heavenly body. What distinctive feature does it have?

Answer: it has rings

These two planets are awfully close. It is possible that the one they just left was actually a moon. Many of the worlds they travel to are actually moons.

FOX did not like the episode "Serenity" as a pilot. They demanded another pilot be written. Joss Whedon and Tim Minear wrote "The Train Job" over a weekend, doing their best to explain what happened in the original pilot without being redundant. The problem with the compression coil got mentioned again, here.

It's clear that the creators knew from the start that they wanted this problem to exist for the later episode "Out of Gas".

They use the cover story that they are newlyweds looking for work. Mal says that they were to talk to a man named Joey Bloggs who might have work for them. But, Mal didn't know that Joey Bloggs had blown his head off 8 months back!
