1. Prime Suspect

Answer: Helen Mirren

Helen starred as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, in this popular ITV drama. The show was later remade in America, starring Maria Bello, but this was cancelled after only 13 episodes.
2. The Sweeney

Answer: Dennis Waterman

Dennis Waterman played the part of D.S. George Carter in "The Sweeney" for its entire run. "The Sweeney" was one of the few series that Waterman starred in that he didn't sing the theme song to! The theme tunes to "Minder", "New Tricks" and "Stay Lucky" all had the benefit of Waterman's vocals.
3. Heartbeat

Answer: Nick Berry

Nick Berry played the part of P.C. Nick Rowan in "Heartbeat" for the first seven years it was shown. After he left, the show continued for another 11 series, which, considering the show was set in the 1960s, made that a very long decade indeed!
4. A Touch of Frost

Answer: David Jason

David Jason played the part of D.I. William "Jack" Frost in "A Touch of Frost". Jason is very known for playing the part of Del-Boy in "Only Fools and Horses", and has also starred in the comedy series "Open All Hours" and its sequel "Still Open All Hours".
5. The Chinese Detective

David Yip starred in this series as Detective Sergeant John Ho, and a few years later appeared on the Channel Four soap opera "Brookside".

11. Crime Traveller

"Crime Traveller" followed the adventures of Detective Jeff Slade (Michael French), who used a time machine to go back and try to stop crimes that had already happened. The series also starred Chloe Annett and Sue Johnston.

Michael French is also well-known for long-running roles in the BBC series "EastEnders", "Casualty" and "Holby City".
12. Life on Mars

In "Life on Mars", John Simm plays a police officer named Sam Tyler, who, after being hit by a car, wakes up thirty years earlier in the 1970s. He is assisted by Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister). The programme is very much in the style of the series "The Sweeney".

A follow-up series "Ashes to Ashes" had a similar premise but set-in the 1980s. Philip Glenister reprised his role as Gene Hunt in this series which starred Keeley Hawes.
13. The Commander

Former "Brookside" actress Amanda Burton played the part of Commander Clare Blake in this drama series, where she led a murder squad based in London.

Burton is also famous for a long-running role as a pathologist in the BBC One series "Silent Witness".
14. Dixon of Dock Green

Answer: Jack Warner

Jack Warner played the lead role of P.C. George Dixon in the long-running series "Dixon of Dock Green". George Dixon first appeared in the film "The Blue Lamp", where he was murdered, but the character was popular enough to be miraculously revived from the dead for the series!
15. Van der Valk

Answer: Barry Foster

Barry Foster first played the part of Dutch Detective Simon Van der Valk in the early 1970s. The show was revived for one series in the early 1990s.

The well-known theme tune to "Van Der Valk" was called "Eye Level" and played by The Simon Park Orchestra. It was released as a single and reached number 1 in the British pop charts in 1973.
