Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sarah is forever getting into scrapes, but you don't usually expect the Doctor to be the source of the trouble. However, at the end of one episode, the Doctor tussles with his companion so she falls and rolls over several times. What memorable thing happens next?

Answer: Her face falls off

The companion is in fact an android made to look like Sarah ('The Android Invasion'). The Doctor realises this because she is wearing a scarf that the real Sarah left behind in a chase.
2. In 'Terror of the Zygons', Sarah is attacked in a barn by someone she thought she could trust. Who is it that this zygon resembles?

Answer: Harry

The poor zygon-Harry plummets pitchfork in hand off the upper level, and ends up flailing around on the bottom of the barn before dying, and then vanishing.
3. Sarah has helped save the day on many an occasion. In 'The Ark in Space' she volunteers to carry a cable through a small triangular pipe to provide electrical power to destroy the Wirrn. However, about 15 metres from the end, she announces that she's stuck. With what words does the Doctor try to get her moving again?

Answer: Oh stop whining, girl, you're useless

The Doctor figures that insulting Sarah and making sexist remarks is the best way to get her moving again. "That's the trouble with girls like you. You think you're tough, but when you're really up against it you've no guts at all." Needless to say, this incites her to prove him wrong, just as he intends.
4. Apparently, among Sarah's many talents is rifle shooting. In 'Pyramids of Mars' she has a chance to demonstrate this skill by firing at some explosives intended to blow up a pyramid-shaped rocket. How is it that the explosion of the rocket fails to occur?

Answer: Sutekh prevents it

Sarah in fact hits the explosives, and for a second we think she has succeeded. But in a magical moment of reverse-the-film special effect, the blast is absorbed back into the explosive device by Sutekh's sheer mental power. The rocket is finally destroyed when the Doctor distracts Sutekh's attention, causing him to lose his concentration and release the explosion.
5. Many of the most exciting Sarah moments occur, not surprisingly, at the end of an episode. On one such occasion, Sarah is attacked by a creature that lands her with a potentially fatal fever, involving glowing lines that spread across her neck and face. What is this creature?

Answer: A cybermat

This is in 'Revenge of the Cybermen'. Unfortunately, the cybermat's attack itself is not the most believable of moments. Elisabeth Sladen could have used some lessons from Graeme Garden (from 'The Goodies') on how to be convincingly attacked by an inanimate object.
Krynoid is the name of the carnivorous plant from 'The Seeds of Doom'. The giant maggots appear in 'The Green Death', which was from Jo's era not Sarah's. Despite this, throughout my childhood I 'remembered' the giant maggot cave from this story as one of those magical Sarah moments.
6. In another life-threatening moment, Sarah is tied up in the base of a large metal tube or hopper and slid towards a shredding and crushing death--or at least that's the idea. Whose meal is this intended to turn her into?

Answer: A plant's

The device is a compost machine in the home of the wonderfully mad botanist in 'The Seeds of Doom'.
7. Those metal tubes are trouble. In which story are the Doctor and Sarah nearly ejected into space in metal tubes side-by-side to each other?

Answer: Planet of Evil

As the BBC website points out, "The resolution to the cliffhanger at the beginning of episode four is a bit suspect, as the Doctor and Sarah were much further down the ejection 'tubes' when last seen in the third episode". Ah well, never mind.
8. And speaking of tubes, in one story Sarah is trapped in a vertical clear-plastic tube, with two buttons at the bottom, while the Doctor has to work out which of the buttons will release her, and which will kill her. What planet are they on?

Answer: Mars

And for some extra glory: if the trap is guarded by two Guardians, one programmed to deceive and one to tell the truth, and the Doctor asks of one "If I were to ask your fellow Guardian the question, which switch would he indicate?", would the Guardian point to the release switch or the death switch? You will have to watch 'Pyramids of Mars' to find out.
9. One of the most memorable Sarah moments of all occurs at the end of an episode in 'Genesis of the Daleks', when she falls from red scaffolding seemingly to her death. Where is the scaffolding located?

Answer: The Thal dome

One of the best things about this magnificent story is that the Thals are not represented as the hapless victims of an evil race, but as equal parties to the war that has devastated their planet. The scaffolding surrounds a rocket that the Thals later use to destroy the Kaled dome. Brave Sarah is leading her fellow captives in an escape when she falls.
10. In more than one story we see Sarah, or her look-alike, working for the enemy. In which of the following does this not happen?

Answer: Terror of the Zygons

Sarah is hypnotised by Hieronymous in 'The Masque of Mandragora', possessed by the Queen spider in 'Planet of the Spiders', and duplicated as an android in 'The Android Invasion'. But the zygons never get around to imitating her. Elisabeth Sladen plays quite a convincing bad guy, getting a calculating and somewhat enigmatic wide-eyed look on her face every time she tries to deceive the Doctor. We also see her like this in 'The Hand of Fear', where, brainwashed, she wanders around saying quietly "Eldrad *must* live".

Unfortunately, barring her reappearance in 'The Five Doctors', this story also brings Sarah's incredible adventures with the Doctor to a close.
