Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode aired, entitled "Royal Flush", the Monkees took on the task of guarding a princess from the machinations of her Uncle Otto, who had his eye on her throne. Otto was determined to kill her before her birthday, when she would be old enough to become queen. Which dashing young heart-throb had a sword fight with Otto?

Answer: Davy

At the banquet held to celebrate the princess' upcoming birthday, Davy ended up engaging in a sword fight with her uncle, with both of them dressed in dashing period clothing. Otto actually won the fight, but Peter saved the day by holding up the phone when the operator announced that the time was midnight. Reaching her age of majority at the stroke of midnight, the princess had her uncle arrested.

Twenty years old when the show was first aired, Davy Jones hailed from Manchester England. He brought some previous acting experience, most notably as the Artful Dodger in the staged production of "Oliver". Being only 5'3" in height, he also had some experience as a jockey before getting into show business.
2. The second episode aired, entitled "Monkee See, Monkee Die", had the boys inheriting an organ from the library of eccentric millionaire, John Cunningham. There was one stipulation for them to be be able to keep the organ though. What was it?

Answer: They had to play one song on it.

The song they played was "Last Train to Clarksville". The stipulation about spending a night in the mansion (not a week) was the one given to the niece, before she could inherit the mansion. The boys ended up staying with her, and helping her get through the night. Cunningham's friend, butler and psychic tried to frighten her out, so that they could inherit the estate themselves.
3. The next episode, called "Monkee versus Machine" found the boys broke and looking for money to pay the rent. Peter applied for a job that was advertised as needing "no training and no experience" but became flustered when he was interviewed by a computer and was rejected. Who went back and caused the computer to short-circuit by confusing it?

Answer: Mike

The computer confused Peter by taking everything he said literally, and not allowing for human mistakes. When Mike applied for the job, he took the same approach with the computer, which was "not programmed" for that kind of interaction. It blew some smoke and spit out a card identifying Mike as a genius, so he was immediately hired in a very senior position. The battle began as the boys fought to have the toy factory take on a more human approach in its business dealings.

Texan Michael Nesmith was twenty-three when filming began. He brought with him some experience in writing and performing folk and rock music, with a slightly western flavour. He was also the only one of the four who was married and a father at the time the show was being aired.
4. "Your Friendly Neighbourhood Kidnapper", the fourth episode shown, saw the boys making it to the finals of a talent contest. The manager of one of the rival groups arranged to have the Monkees kidnapped (although they thought it was a publicity stunt) to keep them away from the contest. Did they eventually win the contest?

Answer: No

Although they did manage to escape their kidnappers (once they realized that it wasn't a publicity stunt after all) and made it in time for the competition, they did not win. A group called Lester Crabtree and the Three Crabs won. This was a group of middle aged men who didn't play or sing a single note. Earlier in the show, the other group's manager told the boys that he had arranged for a group of screaming girls to rip Davy's clothes off in a certain club.

Instead he had the girls rip the clothes off of Lester Crabtree, much to his surprise. Having Lester form a group and win the talent show was a running joke.
5. In "The Spy Who Came in From the Cool" one of the boys unwittingly spoke the secret code, and ended up with a microchip that was supposed to go to another spy. Where was the microchip hidden?

Answer: in a pair of red maracas

The spy with the maracas was told that his contact would be very short and would ask for a pair of red maracas. When told that they would cost six dollars, the contact was to reply that he only had fifty cents. Dave walked in and asked for maracas. When offered the yellow ones, he asked for the red ones.

When the rest of the dialogue went as expected, the spy gave Davy the red maracas, and then he and his partner spent the rest of the episode trying to get the microfilm back.
6. In "Success Story" Davy was upset to hear of the impending visit of what relative?

Answer: his grandfather

Davy's grandfather had raised him and had been skeptical about his desire to go to the States. So Davy had been telling his grandfather that he was a tremendous success, and was very rich. Davy was worried that when his grandfather learned the truth, he would force him to return to England. So Mike pretended to be Davy's chef, Micky his chauffeur (in a borrowed car) and Peter his house boy.

When things fell apart, his grandfather did indeed expect him to return to England, until the loyalty of Davy's friend convinced him that Davy was indeed successful in ways that counted.
7. In "Monkees in a Ghost Town" the Monkee-Mobile ran out of gas in an abandoned town where two gangsters were waiting for a visit from the Big Man, whom they had never met. Two of the boys were captured and thrown into the old jail. Which one of the guys pretended to be the Big Man, in an attempt to rescue the others?

Answer: Micky

Davy and Mike were behind bars when Micky (doing his James Cagney impression) and Peter burst in, pretending to be the Big Man and his henchman Spider. The two gangsters believed them at first, until they realized that there was no sound of a car driving up. Peter and Micky joined Davy and Mike behind bars, and had to find another way out.

A native Californian, Micky was twenty-one when the show was first aired. He had a starring role in the 50's television show "Circus Boy" and had been also performed both folk and rock and roll music with various local bands.
8. In "Don't Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth" Davy was asked by a young boy on the beach to look after his horse, because his father wouldn't let him keep it anymore. Another farmer challenged Davy to a horse race, offering a $100 bet that he would win. Since the Monkees didn't have $100 to pay if they lost, what did the farmer suggest that they put up as their part of the bet?

Answer: a guitar

The boy's father was not prepared to continue feeding an animal that wasn't useful around the farm. The Monkees offered to work for a week, to cover the initial purchase price of the horse ($100) but were pretty useless and fired on the first day. When Davy won the race, the prize money was turned over to the boy's father, who then allowed the boy to keep his horse.
At the end of the show another young boy asked Davy to look after his pet camel, but the other Monkees carried him away.
9. In "The Chaperone", Davy fell in love with Lesley, a girl whose very strict father would only let her attend chaperoned events. The boys decided to throw a party and asked their landlord to be the chaperone, but changed their minds when they found that he would charge them for the service. Who did they next ask to be their chaperone?

Answer: the cleaning lady

The cleaning lady, who cleaned every second Thursday of a month with an R in it, arrived to do her job at that very opportune moment. In a scene that was reminiscent of "My Fair Lady", the boys tried to polish her up. She was a heavy drinker though, and by the time the party was to start, she had passed out cold. Micky donned the dress and wig and pretended to be the chaperone, hoping that
Lesley's father would leave once he saw that a chaperone was present. Instead he took a shine to Micky and spent the evening flirting with him.
10. In "Monkees a la Carte" gangsters forced their friend Pops to sign over his restaurant to them. The boys got jobs at the restaurant, and worked with the police, to try and get the restaurant back for Pops. During the big meeting of all the city's gangsters, when the boys were also pretending to be members of the nefarious Purple Flower Gang, one of the boys slipped out to get the police. Who was this?

Answer: Peter

While Mike, Micky and Davy ran themselves ragged in their dual roles of waiters and Purple Flower Gang members, Peter went to the police station. Because he was dressed as a gang member, he was arrested and questioned about crimes the gang had committed. As they plied him with food and beverages, he admitted to all of the crimes and even made up a few, so that he could get more to eat.

From Washington D.C. Peter Thorkelson was the last of the Monkees to be signed; he was also the oldest of the four boys (but only by a matter on months). Peter was discovered when he was working as a dishwasher. He had been recommended for the show by Steven Stills, who had himself unsuccessfully tried out for the part. Stills later went on to achieve fame in groups like Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
While Mike was the only Monkee who was married when the show was airing, Peter had had an unsuccessful, teenaged marriage that lasted only three months.
