Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Audition", New Directions sang which song to try and encourage new students to join?

Answer: Empire State of Mind

The first major hit for the show in season 2, "Empire State of Mind" (originally by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys) reached number twenty-one on the Billboard charts and became the highest-selling song from "Audition". To date it would be the fourth-highest charting song from the show (the others, in no particular order, being "Poker Face", "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Don't Stop Believin'").

The original appeared on many year-end charts worldwide and hit number one on three different Billboard charts.

It went three times platinum in the U.S. The "Glee" version appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4". In the show, the kids sang this song in order to try and rally up new students for New Directions. With school back in session and the club down one member (after Matt transferred schools) they played "Empire State of Mind" to show people that they weren't all about showtunes.

The attention they anticipated didn't really materialize.
2. In "Audition", Rachel sang "Telephone" in the girls' bathroom with which other student?

Answer: Sunshine

While putting up posters to get people to join New Directions, Rachel came across Sunshine, a foreign exchange student, in the girls' bathroom. Soon, the two ended up singing a duet of Lady Gaga's "Telephone" before Sue came in and told them to be quiet.

The performance made Rachel worried. Because of Sunshine's singing talents, the fears she would be upstaged. "Telephone" was a hit for Lady GaGa in 2010 from her "The Fame Monster" album. The second single off the CD, it hit number one on two Billboard charts (appearing on five) and reached number sixteen on the Billboard year-end chart, going multi-platinum in a number of countries.

It was originally sung with Beyonce. The "Glee" version, while not appearing on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4", ended up charting at number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100.
3. "Billionaire", performed in "Audition", was the first song performed by which student?

Answer: Sam

"Billionaire" was originally performed by Travie McCoy and Bruno Mars in 2010. Reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100, the song was one of the first major hits for both artists, the latter of whom would have songs appearing in later episodes of "Glee's" second season.

The "Glee" version, the first song performed by new member Sam, would reach number 28 on the same chart and appear on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4". In "Audition", Sam decided to play "Billionaire" (while playing the guitar) to audition for the guys in New Direction.

The song went over well, but Sam avoided permanently joining so that he could boost his reputation and be quarterback for the football team, a role he would take from Finn.
4. Rachel performed "What I Did for Love" in which location?

Answer: Auditorium

In the end of "Audition", Rachel, disappointed with her selfish attitude and the ways in which she forced Sunshine to not feel welcome in New Directions, sang this song originally from "A Chorus Line". The song closed the episode before Rachel faced her peers and fellow choir members after what she had done.
"What I Did For Love" did not appear on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4" but nevertheless charted at number fifty-one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song "Sing!" from the same musical would later appear in the "Duets" episode of season two performed by Tina and Mike.
5. Which song was not performed by the kids in the Britney Spears-centric episode entitled "Britney/Brittany"?

Answer: Sometimes

Containing five Britney Spears songs, "Britney/Brittany" was the second episode revolving almost entirely around one artist's works. When the kids wanted to sing a Britney Spears song for fall homecoming, Mr. Schuester was against the idea, but after odd anesthesia dreams, many of the kids realized that Britney may be a smart idea (especially Brittany, who got her first songs of the series).

The songs included "I'm a Slave 4 U" (performed by Brittany and reaching number fifty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart), "Me Against the Music" (performed by Brittany and Santana, reaching number fifty-six), "Baby, One More Time" (performed by Rachel, reaching number fifty-four), "Stronger" (performed by Artie, reaching number fifty-three), and "Toxic", the most popular rendition, reaching number sixteen on the Hot 100 and being the top song from the episode. "Toxic", "Stronger", and "Me Against the Music" all appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4".
6. The only song not Britney Spears-themed from "Britney/Brittany" was "The Only Exception", but who sang it?

Answer: Rachel

"The Only Exception", originally by Paramore, hit number twenty-four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010 and became the band's most popular song to date on that chart. The "Glee" version, performed by Rachel in the choir room at the end of the "Britney/Brittany" episode, pushed up to number twenty-six, nearly matching the original. It appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4".
In the episode, Rachel sang this song to Finn, finally letting go of the anxieties she had pertaining to his wanting to be popular and the possibility that they could not be together.
7. In "Grilled Cheesus", Puck sang which Billy Joel song?

Answer: Only the Good Die Young

While the original version of "Only the Good Die Young" was released in 1977 by Billy Joel, it hit number twenty-four in the year of its release (on the Billboard Hot 100). Its album, "The Stranger", took diamond status in the United States peaking at number two on the Billboard album charts and staying on the listings for over one hundred thirty weeks.

The "Glee" version of the song hit number fifty on the Billboard Hot 100. The "Glee" version did not appear on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4". To continue his streak of Jewish artist renditions, Puck sang this song to express that his spirituality went beyond simply praying and recognizing religious figures. "Piano Man" was sung by Will and Bryan Ryan in season 1's "Dream On".
8. In "Grilled Cheesus", Kurt dedicated his version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to whom?

Answer: His father

After his dad's heart attack and subsequent coma, Kurt didn't turn to religion (being an atheist) and instead decided to turn to hope. For his father, and to express his feelings, he performed The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" while nostalgically reflecting on his childhood with his dad. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the highest-charting song from the "Grilled Cheesus" episode reaching number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 and appearing on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4".

The version performed by Kurt is actually based on the version featured in Julie Taymor's 2007 film "Across the Universe" as performed by T.V. Carpio.

The original was The Beatles' first number one hit.
9. Which member of New Directions battled their crisis of faith in "Grilled Cheesus" and performed "Losing My Religion"?

Answer: Finn

First performed by R.E.M. in 1991 on their "Out of Time" album, the original "Losing My Religion" peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought the band mainstream attention. The song also hit number one on two other Billboard charts. The version featured in "Glee" (sung by Finn) ended up hitting number sixty on the Hot 100 though it wasn't on the "Glee: The Music, Volume 4" soundtrack. After speaking with Emma about his Grilled Cheesus experiences, Finn was left questioning the existence of a higher power and sang this song to show his frustration despite the fact that the kids in New Directions were asked not to sing about religion. Will claimed he allowed this to demonstrate the flipside of the argument, especially since it was Finn's idea to sing about religion in the first place.
10. "Grilled Cheesus" ended with a performance of Joan Osborne's "One of Us" in the school auditorium.

Answer: True

At the end of "Grilled Cheesus", the kids decided to perform Joan Osborne's "One of Us" to end their week focusing on religion and spirituality. Sue, who was outright opposed to the idea originally, eased up for this occasion after a talk with her sister about believing in God. "One of Us" was originally performed and released by Joan Osborne in 1995.

It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and also appeared on three other Billboard charts (as well as the year-end chart in number thirty).

The "Glee" version hit number thirty-seven on the same chart and appeared on "Glee: The Music, Volume 4".
