Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the Doctor's new companion in "The Pilot"?

Answer: Bill

Bill Potts is played by Pearl Mackie. Pearl is a native of Brixton, London, born there in 1987. She is fairly new to acting, with "Doctor Who" being her first major role. Mackie's addition to the cast was announced in April 2016. Bill is the first openly gay companion in the history of the series.

Melanie Bush (Mel) was a companion of the sixth and seventh Doctors, and was played by Bonnie Langford.
2. What food is featured prominently at the start of "The Pilot"?

Answer: french fries (chips)

French fries are shown repeatedly during the Doctor's lecture. Bill is working as a lunch lady, serving up fries, during this sequence. In her first conversation with the Doctor, Bill tells about giving a girl she liked extra fries -- who then proceeded to become fat.
3. What does the Doctor's new companion give him as a Christmas gift?

Answer: a rug

She gives him a rug, "a cheap one" according to her. By that point, the Doctor had been tutoring Bill when he wasn't giving grand lectures about the nature of time and space. When Bill told the Doctor that she didn't have photographs of her late mother, the Doctor went back and took some for her.
4. What is the name of the girl who was absorbed by the puddle in "The Pilot"?

Answer: Heather

Her name was Heather. Bill first met her at a party, and then at the university. Heather showed Bill a mysterious puddle, and was later absorbed by the puddle. The puddle turned out to be fuel from an alien spaceship. Because of a promise she made, Heather literally followed Bill to the far reaches of the universe.

Heather was played by Stephanie Hyam. Her credits include Lily Clarke in the series "Jekyll and Hyde" (2015) and Charlotte Murray in "Peaky Blinders" (2016).

Hila Tacorien was a time-traveler trapped in a pocket universe in "Hide" (2013). Maggie Cain was an explorer who got infected by a water creature in "The Waters of Mars" (2009).
5. When the new companion first sees the inside of the TARDIS, what does she compare it to?

Answer: A kitchen

Bill describes the interior of the TARDIS as "a really posh kitchen." She is a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to the true nature of the TARDIS, at first thinking it is a fancy elevator. It takes Bill over two and a half minutes to arrive at "It's bigger on the inside" and even then she still hasn't figured out it's a time machine.
6. Where does the Doctor take the TARDIS after it leaves the vault?

Answer: Australia

In attempting to outrun the water creature, the Doctor first stops in Sydney, Australia. It only takes Heather about a minute to find them there. You can tell it is Sydney because the Opera House is in the background.
7. How far into the future does the Doctor travel in attempting to escape the water creature?

Answer: 23 million years

The Doctor takes Bill to planet across the universe and 23 million years into the future, but to no avail. Heather quickly tracks them down. While 23 million years is a big jump, it is nowhere close to the farthest the Doctor has traveled in time - he has been at the end of time in "Utopia" (2007), "Listen" (2014) and "Hell Bent" (2015).
8. What enemy does the Doctor visit in an attempt to stop the water creature?

Answer: Daleks

The Doctor takes Bill to a spaceship where a battle with Daleks is raging. The Doctor confronts a Dalek, who shoots at Heather. She is shot several times by the Dalek and shakes it off, then absorbs the Dalek quite easily, not exactly an easy thing to do.

The Daleks are the oldest and most popular of the Doctor's enemies. The robots first appeared in the 1963 episode "The Daleks" and have appeared in numerous episodes since.
9. The Doctor had photographs of two people he had traveled with on his desk. Who were they?

Answer: River Song and Susan Foreman

River Song (Alex Kingston) and Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford) were shown several times during the course of the episode.

River Song was the wife of the Doctor. She first appeared (and died) in "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead." Steven Moffatt took her story line to the Singing Towers of Darillium in the 2015 Christmas Special, "The Husbands of River Song." In order to figure out her relationship with the Doctor, you need a flowchart.

Susan Foreman was the Doctor's granddaughter, the title character of the very first episode "An Unearthly Child" (1963). Susan appeared in the first season and part of the second season of "Doctor Who" during 1963 and 1964.The First Doctor left her on Earth at the end of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" (December 1964).
10. The Doctor wipes out Bill's memory at the end of "The Pilot".

Answer: False

The Doctor considers wiping her memory, but he reconsiders when Bill asks "what if someone did it to you." Whether the Doctor remembers losing his memories of Clara is still up for debate, but clearly something caused him to have second thoughts.

At the end of the episode, the Doctor invited Bill to join him in the TARDIS.
