The series started off with a scene where Sam was having some alcohol, at a bar, and he was being interviewed by a reporter. The reporter informed Sam, during their talk, he promised not to give out Sam's name and Sam remarked that he would not even give him a quote to use. The reporter asked Sam why they were there and Sam simply said the reporter sat down to talk to him.

The series kicked off its first major storyline, of the first season, when they had Sam introduce himself to a woman that he was unaware was a call girl. They slept together and the story leaked that Sam had been with a woman who took money for sex. This caused The White House to have pressure put on them but, in the end, Sam kept his job and did not get involved in any other scandals.

When we first saw C.J., she was on the treadmill and working out with a friend and she told him about her job as Press Secretary at The White House. She mentioned that, despite the tough job she had, you could have a normal life if you knew how to budget your time. C.J. stated that, from the hour of 5 a.m. to 6 a.m., it was her time to have fun and she liked to use that time to work out at the gym.

Toby was on the plane and he was speaking to a flight attendant when someone came up to talk to him. The woman said that someone had contacted the cockpit of the plane to tell Toby that President Bartlet had been involved in a bicycle accident. Toby got on the phone to hear more about this but the flight attendant said he could not use his phone until the plane landed. Toby replied that he would make the call once the plane landed.

There were a couple of occasions in which President Bartlet was referred to as "POTUS", which stands for "President Of The United States." The first instance was when someone told Leo about how the POTUS got into a bicycle accident and then the second time was Sam telling the call girl he met about his job. Sam mentioned he worked for the POTUS and she was befuddled as to what it meant so Sam informed her what the acronym stood for and he left her room.

Donna was working, as Josh Lyman's assistant, and Leo contacted her right after the opening credits. He told her he wanted to speak to Josh (Leo, as Chief of Staff, was Josh's boss since Josh was the Deputy Chief of Staff) and he also asked about how the President was doing from the bike accident. Donna remarked that President Bartlet had a minor sprain but nothing serious.

C.J. gave a press conference and she mentioned a doctor by the name of Randal Haymen, who was chief of orthopedics at St. John's Hospital and she commented that he diagnosed President Bartlet as having a sprained ankle. C.J. remarked that the President received the sprain when he accidentally rode his bicycle into a tree.

After C.J. described how President Bartlet got injured, the reporters let out a chuckle so C.J. simply said details were in the report she provided them.

Josh was in serious trouble, in this episode, since he got into an exchange with someone, on television, and said a controversial thing to her. They discussed religion and she said he just did not believe in her God. Josh commented that the God she prayed to was too busy being indicted for tax fraud.

This sparked controversy, for The White House, and many people wondered if Josh would lose his job. President Bartlet decided not to fire Josh.

Mandy was seen, in one scene, driving really fast and talking on her cell phone at the same time. A police officer noticed her speeding and he flipped around to pull her over by signaling his siren. As Mandy was talking, she noticed the officer waving for her to stop her vehicle so she did.

When the officer got to the car, Mandy ignored him when he told her she sped and ran a red light and asked her for her license and registration. Mandy hung up the phone and let the officer cite her.

Josh and Mandy were having lunch and two women came up to Josh and her and told them they were part of a political science group and wanted his autograph. Josh decided to give them an autograph and he encouraged them to get one from Mandy as well since she was excellent.

The women asked Josh if Mandy and he once dated and Josh said Mandy stole from him and told them thanks for stopping by to visit. Josh and Mandy continued to talk about an upcoming campaign.
