Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1963 saw the first ever episode of "Doctor Who" - "The Unearthly Child." But which established British actor took on the role of The Doctor?

Answer: William Hartnell

"The Unearthly Child" was first broadcast not long after it was announced that President Kennedy had been assassinated.
2. After 3 and a half-ish years as The Doctor, William Hartnell grew ill and decided it was time to leave. A new actor took his place. Who was this?

Answer: Patrick Troughton

William Hartnell himself had the idea of regeneration.
3. After 3 years, Patrick Troughton was exhausted and decided to quit. Another already established British actor took on the role of The Doctor - Jon Pertwee. But which recurring villain - played then by Roger Delgado - was introduced in Pertwee's second season?

Answer: The Master

It was originally intended to write off Jon Pertwee and The Master in Jon Pertwee's 4th year. However, due to Roger Delgado's extremely unfortunate car-crash in 1973, the story was never produced. Jon Pertwee stayed on for 1 last year, and The Master wouldn't be seen on our screens again until 1976.
4. After realising that he couldn't do any other jobs whilst playing The Doctor, Jon Pertwee quit, and the hugely popular Tom Baker took over. He played The Doctor for an incredible number of seasons, but how many?

Answer: 7

The 4th Doctor went through many famous companions - K-9, Romana and Sarah-Jane Smith. His Doctor only ever 'fought' The Cybermen once, and the Daleks twice in all of his 7 seasons. At the end of his 7 seasons, the character 'The Master' was re-introduced and played by Anthony Ainley - Who also played The Master for an incredible length of time, spanning 1981 - 1989.
5. John Nathan-Turner took over "Doctor Who" as its main producer, and Matthew Waterhouse became The 4th Doctor's new companion. Tom Baker - for reasons best known to himself - didn't get along with either Nathan-Turner or Matthew Waterhouse. So after 7 wonderful seasons, he quit the show. It was decided to make an already popular actor take over and the producers offered the role of the 5th Doctor to whom?

Answer: Peter Davison

John Nathan-Turner was "Doctor Who's" producer for 10 years, spanning the end of the 4th Doctor right through to when Doctor Who was cancelled in 1989.
6. Peter Davison met Patrick Troughton in a BBC car park and asked for some advice about playing The Doctor. The only advice Patrick Troughton gave him was to only play The Doctor for 3 years. He took this advice, and in 1984 quit the role as The Doctor. Colin Baker was then chosen to play the 6th Doctor and during an interview before the role was cast, John Nathan-Turner said he was looking for some-one with a particular attribute. What attribute was he looking for?

Answer: "A bit crotchety."

Colin Baker was fired from his role as The Doctor. Michael Grade - The then head of BBC Drama - thought that 3 years was long enough for someone to play The Doctor and so asked John Nathan-Turner to fire him.
7. After Colin Baker was fired, Nathan-Turner decided to cast Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor. Sylvester McCoy was The Doctor for 3 whole seasons, before it was cancelled due to low ratings in 1989. In his first season, The 7th Doctor was rather crazy, and unpredictable. It was then decided to try and boost ratings by making The Doctor more darker and mysterious. However, seeing as "Doctor Who" was then cancelled, it left many questions un-answered. After 7 years, "Doctor Who" was revived for a movie in 1996. Sylvester McCoy agreed to return for this movie for what main reason?

Answer: He said to his fans that he would always shoot a regeneration scene.

A 27th season was planned. It brought back The Ice Warriors and wrote off the character of Ace. 2 of the 4 storylines were penned and ready to be filmed.
8. Who played the 8th Doctor in "The Doctor Who Movie"?

Answer: Paul McGann

It was planned to make a series - for America - if the movie did well. Although it achieved over 9 million viewers in Britain, it didn't even reach 4 million in America, so a series was scrapped. However, Paul McGann did star in several audio productions and was The Doctor in many of the books.
9. Russell T. Davies won a battle to bring "Doctor Who" back to our screens. He cast a well-known actor into the role - Christopher Eccleston - and a full series was broadcast in 2005. Christopher Eccleston played the Doctor for only 1 season. Why did Christopher Eccleston only stay for 1 year?

Answer: He had difficulties with the showrunner

Russell T. Davies wanted the regeneration to be a massive surprise, but it was leaked that David Tennant would play the 10th Doctor.
10. David Tennant played the Doctor for four seasons, then decided to leave. Why did he decide to leave?

Answer: He believed 3 years was enough to play The Doctor. He decided to stay on for the 4 specials, however.
