Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story begins with a man being taken into custody by the police. Who does he say told him to kill his family?

Answer: The Lord

The story begins in Texas in July. A man goes outside with a hose to clean up a bloody stain on his back porch, and his neighbour, who initially offers him lemonade, discovers this, although the man is not initially phased by the notion of what he is doing.

While cleaning out red stains on his oven door, the man hears the doorbell ring, and answers it to find the police who ask if they can take a look around. He lets them in and they find bloodied clothing in the clothes hamper in the bedroom.

As well, the shower curtain is missing from the bathroom, and on the floor is a blood-soaked towel. The officers find three bodies in the garage; one is elderly, one is middle-aged, and another is just a teenager. As they bring him to their cruiser, they ask him why he did it, and he says that the Lord told him to clean up the place, so he did.

The neighbours who called the police watch from their front door, and while the wife is shocked by this, her husband says that it was unfortunate for the man.
2. On the news, Anne and Amy hear of a group of men set out to protect two men accused of murdering an exotic dancer. What is this group's name?

Answer: The Sons of Adam

The next month in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a woman, Anne speaks with a counselor at a homeless shelter, who tells her that she has been in for the third time, and in order to stop the assault against her, she may need to leave home. The woman says that she has nowhere to go though, as she's been calling her friend for a week, yet her husband keeps answering and saying she's not there.

As a last chance, she called that friend's daughter, and the same thing happened. The husband said she was out, but he didn't know where. In the meantime, the news informs viewers that 150 women were executed in Arabic nations for violations of Sharia Law.

At home, Anne, her daughter Amy, and her friend, Bella, prepared for a welcome home party for her husband Alan, who Bella describes as 'one of the good ones.

He is coming back from a trip in Columbia with his partner, 'Barney'. As they eat desert, they tell the family that they have been invited back to Columbia since they have won a medal for their work, developing an enzyme to wipe out the cane fly. Bella is shocked at this, feeling that Mother Nature will end up finding a way to get back at humans, but the ends up leaving early, claiming that she needs to be on the plane in the morning to head to the site of the Sons of Adam, since the town is going under quarantine for the bird flu.
3. Where does Bella travel for government business?

Answer: Jacksonville, Florida

When Bella arrives in Jacksonville for her classified work, it turns out that Jacksonville has been shut off from the rest of the surrounding area by the military. When her car arrives, she is told by the commanding officer that she must step out of the vehicle for her own safety. Jacksonville has had 1,100 homicides in the past few days, all of which were women. Bella is taken to where the original murderer is being detained in order to question him about the incident.

As she is led to the prison cell in which he is being held, the town mayor and reverend watch her glaringly.

He tells the story of what happened. He went to the strip club and noticed the original murderer at the stage, and as one of the strippers danced nearby, he broke a bottle and sliced into her neck.

He was later shot by one of the other men in the bar. While the dancers left the stage, the man telling the story ended up taking out a pocketknife and stabbing the dancer before she departed while the original attacker gouged at himself with the broken bottle below the belt.

He claims that the soul of God entered him at that point, and made things right. He attempts to attack her from behind the bars, telling her that she was sent here to try and tempt him.
4. Which city is not among those initially affected by the occurrences?

Answer: Mexico City

Bella calls Barney when she returns to the office to say that the situation was odd. The first attacker was all-knowing about religion, but the soldier she talked to had never even opened a Bible, but it was like he knew about his own psycho religion.

As well, Jacksonville isn't the only quarantined city. Baton Rouge, Pensacola, Houston, and others are as well. Barney already knows this as well, and says that Austin and San Diego will be next, because according to his map, the 'psycho religion' is following a disease pattern on a map, just like a line of latitude. Bella continues to search for information as the chief of police walks in, and she notes that the incidents are occurring on a global scale.

He then states that the occurrence is a glorious thing before he beats and kills her.

In the next room, the private who led her to the office stares out the window at the other cops, who are singing "Amazing Grace" from hymn books in the street. When he goes in to speak to the chief, he is told to dispose of the body, which he agrees to do.
5. Alan and Barney give a presentation to Homeland Security regarding the phenomena. Who do the representatives initially think is behind what they think is 'bioterrorism'?

Answer: Islamic extremists

In September, Alan is called to Homeland Security, as Bella told the FBI that he may know something about the situation at hand before she was killed. He gives a presentation about the enzyme that he and Barney created and noted the parallels between them. Male flies would have their sex inhibitors blocked off, and thus would be unable to repopulate. Similarly, men in the world were killing off women to do the same thing.

The people watching the presentation initially think that the Sons of Adam are behind this, but Barney thinks it (the religious fanaticism) may just be a symptom.

They also turn towards Islamic extremists, but Alan notes that if anyone were to create a drug removing the distinction between lust, sexual tendencies, and aggression, they would be suicidal, and planning to wipe out the entire human population. Alan and Barney state that if they were to be smart, all men in the world would need to take drugs to perform chemical castration, removing the urge to kill, and as a preventative measure, they would also need to send women to concentration camps above the 35th parallel in order to ensure their safety.

As they close up the meeting, Barney notes that the only other alternative is real castration, and they realize that the wave of incidences are moving south of the disease trends at the same time, with a band across the southern states reaching northern South America, and around, and a small band running parallel through South Africa, Australia, and Argentina.
6. Alan takes the precautionary castration shot.

Answer: False

Anne continues to work at the womens' shelter, taking in buses of women from the southern states in order to ensure their safety, but she finds that there is hardly enough room for them. Later in the day, she and Amy finish their shopping and walk by a group of construction workers. While Anne ignores their catcalling, Amy taunts them, shaking her behind at them then flipping the middle finger. As one of the men walks over in anger, they get into the car and back out of their space, nearly hitting a male driver, who throws a can of pop at them. He quickly drives by, striking two women in the intersection nearby and driving off into the distance.
Alan and Barney work in the lab, testing pheromones on soldiers while playing different images to see what makes them react. When he is informed that the disease is spreading north to Indianapolis, he decides to rush home to be with his family while Barney stays with the lab. When Barney asks him if he took the castration shot, he says that he's been taking Prolactin, and he hasn't jumped the cleaning lady yet. Barney says that although he's homosexual, he took the shot.
Alan arrives at the airport where the ticket clerk informs him that the flight is full. Rather than wait for another flight, he gets short with her, and yells at her until she finds a superior. He ends up on the plane while many others (mostly women) wait for special flights.
7. Where do Anne and Amy flee to after Alan tells them to leave home?

Answer: Ontario

On the plane, Alan falls asleep and dreams about returning home. After tucking Amy into bed, he begins to make love to Anne on their bed, but he dreams that he pulls a knife from under the covers before waking up. When he awakens, the plane turns to the back, where a woman has been strangled while waiting to use the bathroom.

The man responsible claims that it wasn't his fault- he just needed to go. When a woman towards the front of the plane begins to panic, the flight attendant pushes her into her seat and breaks her neck.

The man next to her thanks the attendant for quieting her. Alan realizes that the entire plane, including himself, are infected. When they land, he calls home and tells Anne that he will not be leaving the lab, and that she and Amy will need to leave and head as far north as possible.

They also need to obtain a gun, and if they do see him that they will need to shoot him, since he won't be himself anymore.
8. Anne shoots Alan in Barney's cabin, but doesn't kill him. Where does she shoot?

Answer: His leg

Anne and Amy arrive in Ontario and Amy drives them to Barney's cabin in the woods. When they arrive, they realize that someone is inside, and Amy rushes over, thinking that it's her father. Anne quickly opens the trunk and loads the gun that she and Amy purchased, and she reaches the cabin to find Amy and Alan hugging. Alan says that they reached a breakthrough, and that a cure is coming for them. Hesitant, Anne tries to call Barney, but she gets his answering machine. Amy states that she wants to go with her father and she hugs him, but as she does, Anne notices him groping her behind, and she aims the gun at him. When Alan throws Amy to the side, he lunges at Anne and she shoots him in the shin, bringing him to the floor. She shoots him in the other leg as well, tells him that a first aid kit is in the kitchen under the sink, and she takes Amy in the car and leaves.
Amy is shocked at her mother, not knowing the story, but Anne lets her get her emotions out. Later that night, while Amy is asleep in the car, Anne parks to the side of the road and takes the gun out to the forest. While she does this though, Amy uses the keys in the ignition and drives back in the other direction, back to the cabin.
Arriving at the cabin the next morning, she finds Amy dead inside, and she blacks out.
9. In the months after the outbreak Barney dies, but in which month?

Answer: November

Anne wakes up three days later in a hospital with Barney in front of her. He quickly gives her some pills and dresses her up in mens clothing. When she's all ready, he takes her down the hospital hallway, telling her to close her eyes, even passing a man performing prayers and killing the last of the female survivors.
One month later, in British Columbia, Anne wears her disguise in a convenience store while she picks up some medicine. She isn't noticed as a woman when she checks out. She takes the medicine and returns to a tent which contains Barney, whose health is deteriorating. Barney says that he won't make it to December, and he says that he just wishes that he knew who deliberately did all of it to the humans. Anne wonders why he would think that, but Barney notes that someone must've seen the worst in the human race and thought to exterminate them.
In November, Anne buries Barney in the British Columbian woods and goes off alone.
10. Does Anne discover the truth behind the whole 'solution'?

Answer: Yes

Anne continues to camp in British Columbia, and on one day, she proceeds to the convenience store for ammo, only to find that they are clean out. When she asks for fish hooks instead, the store owner goes to the back to look for them, and she is shocked when she looks to the counter and finds a bag made from a woman's breast. The men in the store note her surprised glance and follow her out of the store, driving behind her down the road. When she realizes that they're chasing her, she drives into the forest and runs for her life. As she goes deeper into the forest, she hides behind a tree as the pursuers come closer. She is saved however, as she has coincidentally hidden in front of a group of aliens. The men chasing her are quickly shot with a beam of energy, killing them. Anne realizes that it was not the doing of other humans, but the doing of alien lifeforms that have doomed the world.
As the snow begins to fall, Anne lights her last fires and stares towards the night sky as a shooting star moves in different directions overhead. She remembers her husband's words to 'make a wish', and she remembers Barney's words that Bella noted that the world was the Garden of Eden, and humans were simply pests.
In December, humans are no more.
