Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode begins with a beautiful woman transporting herself onto the bridge of the Enterprise. How does the bridge crew handle the intruder?

Answer: Kirk calls Security to the bridge, then greets her charmingly.

The second she appears, Kirk calls Security. Then the "beautiful girl" music plays (instead of the "possible threat" music), and the crew seem to take their cues from the music, because Kirk smiles and greets her charmingly, and everyone else just stares at her like they've never seen a woman before. To Security's credit, they arrive, remember their jobs, and pull out their phasers, but the beautiful woman renders the entire ship unconscious before the phasers can ever be used.

It's important to note that no security guards were harmed in the course of this episode.
2. What, according to McCoy, is worse than being dead?

Answer: Your brain being gone.

When the crew wakes up, they discover that Spock is in sickbay, where he is quickly put on life support. When Kirk sees this, he asks if Spock is dead. McCoy replies that Spock is worse than dead, and then tells Kirk just what is wrong with Spock. I'd like to know how DeForest Kelley played this scene with a straight face.
3. The Enterprise crew discovers that Spock's brain could be on one of three planets in a certain system, but they only have time to search one planet before Spock's body dies. How do they choose which of the three planets to search?

Answer: Regular energy pulses are emanating from an Ice Age equivalent planet.

Sulu mentions going to the most technologically advanced planet, but even that planet doesn't have the technology to transport people across space or remove brains with such precision. Uhura picks up the energy pulses, but no one can figure out how this planet is emitting them, so Kirk decides to go there.
4. The landing party captures a man, who is terrified of the people who come from the caves. What does he call these people?

Answer: Givers of pain and delight

Yes, this episode was written and aired in the 1960's.
5. What names were given to the men and women on this planet?

Answer: Morg and Eymorg

The man the landing party captures says the landing party are not Morg or Others, and Kara says the landing party is not Morg or Eymorg. The men are Morgs, the women Eymorgs.
6. How did Kirk, Scotty, and McCoy get free of the pain-giving belts?

Answer: Kirk used the remote control to get ZombieSpock to push the red button on Kara's bracelet.

When Kirk, Scotty, and McCoy found Spock's brain, Kara activated the pain-giving belts to prevent them from tampering with the "Controller." Kirk collapsed near the remote control and used it to get ZombieSpock to restrain Kara and push the button to release the belts. That is one awesome remote control!
7. Why did Spock not want the landing party to try to save him?

Answer: He knew his body was dying and no one had the expertise to reinstall a brain into its proper location.

Spock believed that attempting to rescue him was impractical at best, since nobody knew how to put a severed brain back into a skull. He didn't see any reason for lives to be risked on a futile mission.
8. Why was Spock's brain taken in the first place?

Answer: To be the new Controller.

The old Controller was dying, so they needed a new Controller to keep the underground city running. Spock's brain was used to circulate the air, purify the water, and keep the heat running for the Eymorgs.
9. In the middle of the surgery to replace Spock's brain, McCoy begins to forget how to do it. What does he need to do to aid him in completing the job?

Answer: Reconnect Spock's vocal cords so he can aid McCoy with the surgery.

Apparently, Spock is now a neurosurgeon. If no one in the Federation can do what McCoy is attempting to do, then Spock shouldn't be able to do it, either. Since he seems able to do it so well he can direct someone else on how to do it without even looking at so much as a diagram, he should write a paper on the subject and change his focus from Science to Medicine.
10. What mistake did McCoy say he made while performing Spock's surgery?

Answer: He reconnected Spock's mouth.

After the surgery, Spock talks nonstop about the history and evolution of the natives of the planet. No one else can get a word in edgewise.
