Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hell Girl's real name is Ai Enma, who appears to people as a teenaged girl, but with a rather unsettling difference. What is the biggest physical clue as to her demonic lean?

Answer: Red eyes

Despite her physical age, she has been ferrying souls to Hell for over 400 years. Most of the time she wears a black school uniform, but when she ends someone's life, she puts on a flowery black kimono. She speaks in an almost unnatural whisper while staring out through massive red eyes under her jet-black hair.
2. Though Hell Girl has exacted vengeance for many years, the manner by which to contact her from the mortal world has changed. In the series, what is the current means to let Hell Girl know she is needed?

Answer: A website

The Hell Correspondence website can only be accessed at midnight and then only by those who feel the strongest about their tormentor. The messages arrive on an old, outdated computer, which Hell Girl's grandmother (who sit behind a door using a spinning wheel and is never seen) will relay to Ai.

In the human world, a computer screen will go black and, with the flicker of an online flame, a search box appears with the legend above it stating, 'Your grievance shall be avenged'. If you enter the name of a person, expect a visit from the Hell Girl very shortly. Before computers, messages were originally carried by names written on a wooden block called an 'ema' and left at a shrine...then later by mail and by newspaper ads.
3. In dealings with Hell Girl, a client is offered an object by which their final decision to exact vengeance will be played out. What is the object?

Answer: A straw doll

The doll, which inhabits the spirit of one of Hell Girl's assistants, has a red string tied around its neck. If the client unties the string, the offending party will immediately be sent to Hell. By making that decision, though, the client is condemned to Hell as well, but only at the end of their natural life.
4. Of Hell Girl's three main assistants, Wanyûdô is usually seen as a frail old man, but can transform into what object?

Answer: A coach with burning wheels

'Wanyûdô' is the same name given to an ancient spirit in Japanese folklore who takes the shape of a cart with a flaming wheel bearing the face of an enraged man. Traditionally, he carries the souls of the condemned to Hell, much like the Greek figure Charon. It is Wanyûdô who carries Hell Girl inside him from her spirit realm to the human world. He also transforms into the black straw doll Hell Girl gives to a client.
5. Ren Ichimoku is one of Hell Girl's assistants who investigates the claim of a client who wants someone sent to Hell. Into what object can he transform to further his investigation?

Answer: A gigantic eye

Ren is actually a 'tsukumogami', a spirit that was born from an inanimate object...in his case, a samurai sword. He was given human form by Hell Girl, who found him on a battlefield after his last owner was killed. Ren is normally seen as a handsome young man, but when he is looking in on someone, he is literally looking in.

The giant eye can open on a wall, a ceiling, someone's T-shirt...anywhere. Ren can also assume the shape of a blue straw doll that Hell Girl will give to a client.
6. The slim and beautiful Hone Onna is one of Hell Girl's assistants who, usually with Ren, will look in on people destined for Hell. Once a person's fate is judged and condemned, Hone-Onna usually scares her victims by transforming into what?

Answer: A skeleton

Like the other of Hell Girl's helpers, Hone Onna is a Japanese mythological figure known as a yôkai. Literally translated as 'Bone Woman', Hone Onna can remove the flesh from her body to scare the soul in preparation for their damnation. In her past life, she was a geisha named Tsuyu who was betrayed by a man she loved and murdered by gangsters. Hone Onna can also change to a red straw doll which is given to a potential client by Hell Girl.
7. About mid-way through the first season, two characters are introduced...Hajime Shibata, a single father, and his young daughter, Tsugumi. While Hajime is, by profession, a freelance photojournalist, what is his secret second job?

Answer: Blackmailer

In Hajime's line of work, he sometimes will take compromising photos of celebrities and political leaders. Rather than break the story in the tabloids, he'll sell the photos back to his subjects for substantially more than the usual photographer's fee. It is while concluding a deal with a young starlet that Hajime first reads about the Hell Girl in a magazine.
8. Hajime has taken it upon himself to stop Hell Girl from sending any more people to Hell by trying to reason with people against contacting the Hell Correspondence. It also helps that he has inside help from his daughter, Tsugumi, who established a psychic link with Ai after seeing her at what place?

Answer: A train crossing

Tsugumi sees Ai across the train tracks briefly before Ai disappears. Since that meeting, Tsugumi will sometimes see what Ai sees and Hajime will try to deduce where it is to get there and stop someone from being sent to Hell.
9. In Ai's world between Hell and Earth, she and her helpers are forever under surveillance by the King of Hell, who usually takes the form of what creature?

Answer: A spider

It's not until you get close enough to the little spider on or near Ai's house that you see it has three eyes on its abdomen. The eyes can also be seen lighting the sky as Ai ferries the souls to the gates of Hell. The spider rarely interferes with Ai's job, as she's been doing it for so long she's become rather adept. Only when Ai diverts from her job, as when she pursues Hajime and Tsugumi, does he intervene.
10. Only truly evil people can be sent to Hell by Ai and her associates.

Answer: False

One of the reasons Hajime tries to stop Ai is because not only the tormentors, but the victims, are all sent to Hell for their actions. Tsugumi will usually argue with her dad because she has seen lots of really nasty people who she feels need to be condemned.

However, many of the people involved are young adults and even children, as in the case of a circus girl who sent her twin sister to Hell. In one poignant episode, a deranged man sends an innocent nurse to Hell before taking his own life. The shock of this apparent random action convinces Tsugumi that her dad is right after all.
