Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of season four, Tommy Carcetti was significantly trailing behind incumbent Clarence Royce in the mayoral race. What incident, addressed by Carcetti during a televised debate, gave his campaign a boost?

Answer: The murder of a state's witness

Carcetti pointed out that he had brought up the issue of police protection for witnesses to Royce in the prior year but nothing had been done. Royce's attempt at damage control by asking the police to slow down the investigation into the witness's death only made matters worse. After the election, it was discovered that the witness was actually the victim of a stray bullet.
2. At the beginning of season four, Detective Thomas "Herc" Hauk was working an assignment that would eventually lead to his promotion to sergeant after he witnessed his boss in a compromising situation. What was Herc's assignment?

Answer: Security detail officer for Mayor Royce

Herc took the assignment because he thought it would lead to a promotion, which it did, but not for the reason he suspected. He was promoted after he walked in on Mayor Royce and his assistant in a compromising situation. Herc initially was convinced that he was in trouble, but after talking to Major Valchek, he realized that the event might help his career, which it did when Royce had him promoted, apparently to keep him quiet.
3. In season four, the Major Crimes unit was basically gutted after Lester Freamon stirred up a hornet's nest by having a stack of subpoenas issued against politicians right before the election. In which department did Freamon and Kima Greggs end up after leaving the unit?

Answer: Homicide

Deputy Commissioner Rawls replaced the head of the Major Crimes unit with Lieutenant Marimow, who immediately closed the Marlo Stanfield investigation to pursue "targets with a quick payback". Freamon and Greggs left the department in disgust and ended up in Homicide.

They both cracked big cases: Greggs discovered the cause of an informant's death, and Freamon figured out where Marlo Stanfield was hiding bodies. But once Colonel Daniels had the Major Crimes unit reinstated to its original purpose, both Freamon and Greggs returned to it.
4. In season four, former police officer Pryzbylewski (Prez) was teaching math at an inner city junior high school, but he initially had trouble getting through to the kids. How did Prez finally get the kids interested in math?

Answer: He used dice to teach probabilities.

Prez had noticed some of the kids playing cards during lunch, and he pointed out to them that they weren't betting correctly based on probabilities. The kids became interested, so Prez went to the storage room and took the dice out of every board game he could find and used them to teach the kids.

The kids responded to the method because they were used to betting on dice games. Later when it was time for standardized testing and the teachers were supposed to "teach the test", Prez realized that the kids weren't learning because they weren't interested so he told them to break out the dice, and the kids immediately perked up.
5. After leaving the police force, Bunny Colvin worked briefly as a hotel security guard before taking another job. What was his new position in season four?

Answer: Working with disruptive kids at the school

Colvin was working as part of a research project on socializing disruptive kids. Initially, the program focused on getting the kids to behave in class, but Colvin decided to use their street experience to get them to relate to each other and work together. Just when the program appeared to be getting results, it was cancelled due to a lack of funding.
6. When Omar was arrested in season four after being set up by Marlo Stanfield, whom did he call to help prove his innocence?

Answer: Detective Bunk

Bunk and Omar had gone to the same school, albeit a few years apart, and Omar had assisted Bunk with a prior case against the Barksdale gang, so Omar called in a favor to get reassigned to a safer facility. Bunk did so and then investigated the case against Omar, to the annoyance of his boss.

After he convinced the investigating officer that Omar wasn't responsible for the murder, Omar was freed and agreed to Bunk's demand that he not kill anyone from now on.
7. The final catalyst that gave Tommy Carcetti the victory over incumbent Mayor Royce in season four was the defection of state delegate Odell Watkins from Royce's campaign to Carcetti's. Who drove up to Carcetti while Carcetti was canvassing for votes and told him that Watkins was no longer supporting Royce?

Answer: Deputy Commissioner Rawls

There was a lot of jockeying for position among the police department as it became apparent that Royce might be beaten. Rawls received a call from one of Royce's staff after Watkins stormed out of Royce's office, and Rawls then drove out to see Carcetti who was going door-to-door in search of votes with his campaign manager, Norman Wilson.

After Rawls told them that Watkins might be available for support, Carcetti and Wilson waited until Rawls drove away before literally running back to their vehicle to drive over to see Watkins. Carcetti received his support after telling him that he would be an integral part of a Carcetti administration.
8. In season four, while searching a playground for clues on the disappearance of murder suspect Lex, Lester Freamon was drawn to abandoned houses nearby. What made him suspect that there were bodies in the houses?

Answer: The nails used to board up the houses were unusual.

Freamon noticed that some of the nails were new and were of a different type from the other houses. Bunk and he found Lex's body in the first house, but he was ordered not to look in other houses because the police didn't want the murder rate for the year to go up. Mayor Carcetti overruled the police, however, since the body count for the year would go against the previous administration.
9. At the end of season four, McNulty returned to the Major Crimes unit. What event was the catalyst for his decision to do so?

Answer: Bodie's murder

Bodie had amused McNulty when he avoided jail time by claiming entrapment over the "Hamsterdam" project. Even though they were on opposite sides of the law, McNulty had an appreciation for Bodie's intelligence, and when Bodie was arrested for kicking in the windows of a squad car in a fury of anger over Marlo Stanfield's actions, McNulty had the charges dropped. One of Stanfield's crew saw McNulty pick Bodie up when Bodie was released from custody, which resulted in Stanfield ordering Bodie's murder. McNulty was distraught by Bodie's death, particularly after Poot told him that Bodie was killed because he was seen with the police.

He decided to rejoin Major Crimes to go after Stanfield.
10. At the end of season four, Sergeant Herc was shown at an internal investigations board. Officially, he was in trouble for losing a department camera and lying about an informant, but what was the actual impetus for his prosecution?

Answer: Pulling over and roughing up a minister

Bubbles was snubbed by the minister and took revenge by calling the police and reporting that he'd seen the man putting drugs in his car trunk. Herc pulled over the man and was rough with him, not realizing he was a minister. The ministers were a powerful group in Baltimore, and the new mayor Carcetti had to deal carefully with the situation; he didn't want to upset the ministers nor the police force.

The police were recommending sensitivity training, while the ministers wanted to establish a civilian review board. Commissioner Burrell told Carcetti he could have Herc investigated for any other violation, and when the issue with the camera was discovered, it was used to prosecute him.

But it was his brush with the minister that had led to his downfall.
