"The Wire": Season Five? ...That's all??? Quiz

The final season of "The Wire" brings an end to one of the great experiences of my life. This series may have never win an Emmy, but it should have won a Pulitzer.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many police commissioners of Baltimore are present in the length of this season?

Answer: Four

The season starts with Police Commissioner Ervin H. Burrell on the job, but William A. Rawls replaces him. Then Cedric Daniels replaces him until he resigns and Stan Valcheck takes his place in the final montage.
2. In episode one, what does Bunk and the squad use to get a corner boy to confess?

Answer: A copy machine

Bunk buys the kid's partner a McDonald's combo, and then convinces the boy that his partner is ratting him out, and he'd better take a lie detector to prove his innocence. The lie detector is just a copier, but the boy spills all the beans.
3. Why was the investigation of the mass killings in the vacants put on hold?

Answer: The money for police work had to be put into the schools

Mayor Carcetti was forced to put the money into the schools and cut overtime for all police work. It nearly brings the entire department into an open revolt.
4. What is "Bubbles" Christian name?

Answer: Reginald

For the first time in the entire series, Bubbles true name is revealed. Even his long time friend and sponsor didn't know his true name until it was revealed by a "Baltimore Sun" reporter.
5. How does McNulty get enough funding to continue the investigation on Marlo and the vacants?

Answer: He creates a serial killer

McNulty creates a serial killer of homeless men by putting strangle marks on the neck of an exposure victim and tying a ribbon to his hand, then going back to past cases and placing red ribbons on their corpses. When the serial killer funding comes in, he filters it to Lester Freamon and the Marlo Stanfield case.
6. What was the "head shot" that was supposed to put Clay Davis away?

Answer: Falsifying a loan application

State's Attorney Rupert Bond refused to use that charge because it would have made the case federal, and he wanted to get Davis on his own.
7. How does Freamon get Marlo's cell phone number?

Answer: Herc steals it from Levy

Herc is doing detective work for Levy all season, but when he sees Marlo give Levy his cell number he steals it and gives it to Carver who gives it to Freamon.
8. How does Omar escape from Snoop, Chris and Michael's ambush?

Answer: He jumps from a six story window

Omar was one of my favorite characters of all time. His murder in subsequent episodes cut me deep, but thinking he could fly for the couple of weeks it took HBO to get to the next episode was a lot of fun. His being just as bad with what must have been a horribly broken leg was pretty good too.
9. Who tells Daniels about McNulty's serial killer?

Answer: Greggs

Greggs couldn't let it rest and told Daniels, who told Rawls, who told the Mayor, who decided that nothing could be done without destroying a lot of careers including his own. So, Freamon and McNulty were to be quietly suspended, but a stroke of luck created a copycat who became the fall guy. Then they both just quit.
10. What happens to the reporter, Scott Templeton, after his lies about the serial killer?

Answer: He wins a Pulitzer

City Editor Gus Haynes all but reveals to everyone in charge that this guy is a fraud, but no one cares and they give him the highest honor they can give. But if you ask me, the only Pulitzer that should have been rewarded was the Pulitzer for this magnificent television program. The reality depicted in each episode was picture perfect and its rewards should match it.
