Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Academy Award winning film stars played Bernie Madoff?

Answer: Robert De Niro

I've always been impressed by De Niro's ability to transform into a character. This time he was portraying a real person. There were tiny moments where you could feel some compassion for what Bernie was feeling, in regards to how he destroyed his own family, but as the movie went on it was obvious that everything he felt was about himself. And, other than his statement in court, Bernie showed no compassion for victims outside his own family and extended family.
2. Bernie plead "not guilty" to every criminal charge against him.

Answer: False

Bernie actually plead guilty to all of the charges and maintained that his wife and two sons knew nothing of the Ponzi scheme. This particular act of organized fraud and theft is named after a man named Charles Ponzi. His scheme, which revolved around rely coupons for postage stamps, was the first of this type to be known throughout the U.S., and occurred in the 1920s.
3. Which of these famous movie actresses starred as Bernie's wife, Ruth Madoff?

Answer: Michelle Pfeiffer

Pfeiffer and De Niro also starred in the 2013 film "The Family". After the truth came out, neither of Ruth's sons would communicate with her any longer.
4. Who wrote the book "The Wizard of Lies", which the movie is based on, and also served as intermittent narrator of the movie?

Answer: Diana Henriques

She narrated at the very beginning, and identified herself. She interviewed Bernie in prison, and then wrote the book "The Wizard of Lies". She was also credited on screen as the writer of the book. Her narration popped up a pivotal moments throughout the film.

Rebecca Skloot wrote "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", which was also made into an HBO movie starring Oprah Winfrey. Sydney Schanberg wrote "The Killing Fields". Kara Danvers is a fictional reporter, who's also known as Supergirl on the CW series of the same name.
5. After selling off the Madoff assets via auction, collecting from the firm's brokerage and bank accounts, and some out of court settlements, how much did Irving Picard collect?

Answer: Over $1.5 billion

Some of these properties auctioned off by Picard (who was in control of the liquidation) was the Montauk beach house for nine million, Manhattan penthouse for eight million, cars, boats, sport memorabilia, furniture, clothes, shoes, jewelry, and on and on. While visiting Bernie in prison, Ruth told him that she'd even had to surrender her underwear for auction.
6. How did Mark Madoff die?

Answer: Suicide

Eldest son Mark was harassed on the street by reporters, and Andrew was seen being harassed by an investor on the street. But, the pressure of what had already happened and what was to come was too much for Mark. He hanged himself inside his home, while his infant son was with him. His father-in-law came to check on him when no one could reach him by phone, and found him. So, for the first time since it all happened, Ruth heard from her son Andrew to receive the bad new. The brothers had turned their father in to the FBI after he revealed the truth to them, but in the public opinion they were also guilty. They were also sued into bankruptcy.

Alessandro Nivola played Mark.
7. What caused the death of Andrew Madoff?

Answer: Lymphoma

He had a recurrence of the disease, and while undergoing treatment began speaking about his experience of the scandal. He died at 48 years old. After Mark's death, Ruth would no longer communicate with Bernie. After Andrew's death, Bernie tried continuously to call her from prison, so she changed her phone number.

Nathan Darrow played Andrew. He's also been in the TV series "Billions", "Preacher", "Rectify", and "Gotham".
8. In addition to suing many of the Madoffs, Mark and Stephanie's Madoff's four year old daughter was sued as well.

Answer: True

Bernie had put stuff in little Audrey's name for her future, and those assets were sued for as well. While I felt sympathy for the situation, I agreed that all ill gotten gains should have been reclaimed.

The adorable Reagan Grella played Audrey. She was also in a couple episodes of the Showtime series "The Affair".
9. How much prison time did Bernie receive for his crimes?

Answer: 150 years

Judge Chin: "The message must be sent that Mr. Madoff's crimes were extraordinarily evil. This kind of irresponsible manipulation of the system takes a staggering human toll. Mr. Madoff will get what he deserves. And, will be punished according to his moral culpabilities. Mr. Madoff, please stand. It is the judgment of this court that the defendant, Bernard L. Madoff, shall be and hereby sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 150 years."

Many in the courtroom cheered loudly at this sentence. The judge added that the term had to be stated in months for the record. The 150 years equaled to 1,800 months. Clem Cheung played Judge Chin.
10. The final line in the movie was what?

Answer: "Do you think I'm a sociopath?"

Bernie was extremely disturbed that an article had been written in the "New York Times" which compared him to the serial killer Ted Bundy. He felt there was no way he could be compared with a man who'd killed women. Diana Henriques listened to Bernie talk about his without much comment, and he finally just outright asked her if she thought he was a sociopath. She never responded.
