Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the clown?

Answer: Pennywise

IT is actually an ancient evil that has chosen to plague the town of Derry. Mike Hanlon shows his friends a book that has images of the same clown dating back centuries. It surfaces every 30 years to feed. As it seems to prefer to feed on children, it adopts the form of a clown to lure them.

In one scene, IT calls itself, "The eater of worlds, and of children!" Pennywise is played by the extremely versatile actor Tim Curry.
2. When the seven friends come together, they refer to themselves as 'Lucky Seven' but what other nickname do they give themselves?

Answer: The Losers Club

During the flashbacks, we see the characters as children. Richie Tozier (Seth Green) and Stan Uris (Ben Heller) are already friends and they know Beverley Marsh (Emily Perkins). Bill Denbrough (Jonathan Brandis) and Eddie Kasbrak (Adam Faraizl) are already friends and they meet Ben Hanscombe (Brandon Crane), who is secretly in love with Beverley. Each one of them feels like an outsider thanks to an unwanted aspect of their life. Mike Hanlon (Marlon Taylor) is new in town and as it was the 60's, the fact that he is 'coloured' makes him more of an outcast.

He meets the other six when he is being chased by the resident bully, Henry Bowers (Jarred Blancard), and his gang. As they have all been plagued by these horrible teenagers, they come together and finally stand up to them. Mike then takes a picture of the seven of them - the Losers Club!
3. What was the name of Bill Denbrough's little brother who was taken by IT when they were children?

Answer: Georgie

When Bill is sick, he helps his brother varnish a paper sailboat he has made. It is raining outside so Georgie (Tony Dakota) goes out alone to sail his boat in the teeming gutters. The boat is eventually sucked into the drain on the kerb and as Georgie looks for it, Pennywise appears in the grate. Cautious at first, the little boy almost leaves but then the clown utters the immortal words, "You wanna balloon?" As Georgie reaches for it we see Pennywise reach for him as his teeth turn razor sharp. We later learn that Georgie's arm was ripped off.

As an adult, Mike Hanlon finds a picture of Georgie at the scene of another child's brutal murder, the same picture that winked at Bill just after Georgie's death, then seemed to bleed. This is what prompts him to call the others.
4. What movie did the friends watch that became a living nightmare for Richie when IT took the form of the monster to attack him?

Answer: I Was a Teenage Werewolf

"I Was a Teenage Werewolf" was a 1957 film starring Michael Landon. As the friends watch it, they accidentally drop popcorn on the bully, Henry Bowers. Later, Richie is at school, and after a confrontation with Henry, is sent to fetch a mop from the caretaker in the basement.

While down there he encounters IT, who has taken the form of the werewolf to terrify him. As Richie escapes, IT turns back into the clown, laughs, and waves!
5. Finish the poem that gets Beverley in serious trouble with her father: "Your hair is winter fire January Embers ..."

Answer: My heart burns there too

Beverley has a very strict father (Frank C Turner) who thinks nothing of beating her when he thinks she is being immoral. He takes the poem from her and says, "I worry about you Bevvy, I worry a lot." He thinks she has been messing about with boys and is about to punish her when she finally stands up to him.

She refuses to go to him and runs from the house with her father yelling behind her. Ben Hanscombe wrote the poem and is hiding behind a bush, watching for her reaction. He is overweight and thinks she won't return his feelings so he never tells her he wrote it.

He feels even worse about himself when he sees the trouble he caused.
6. What do the children believe will defeat IT?

Answer: Silver

Having seen the werewolf movie, and been attacked by one, Richie believes silver will kill IT. He steals his mother's silver earrings to use as ammo.
All they have as a weapon is a crude, wooden kids' slingshot, so they have a contest to see who is most accurate. All of the boys prove to be useless but when Beverley tries, she hits all the targets perfectly. This makes the group believe Beverley was supposed to be the one to kill IT.
7. What does Eddie squirt in the clown's face to save Stan?

Answer: Asthma inhaler

When the 'Lucky Seven' come face to face with IT, it grabs Stan and tries to kill him. Eddie whips out his inhaler and shouts "This is battery acid, you slime!" Somehow, thanks to the combined will of the children, this burns like real acid, even though the inhaler is filled with nothing but camphor water.
This is a brave leap for Eddie who has felt weak for his whole life. He is not really ill, his mother wants him to be sick and needy so she can take care of him and smother him. The doctor and chemist know this too and continuously prescribe Eddie a placebo.
8. Which of these is NOT something that comes out of a fortune cookie when the group meet again in the restaurant after receiving Mike's call?

Answer: Maggots

The adult Mike (Tim Reid) has gathered the group together 30 years later. The group includes Bill (Richard Thomas), Ben (John Ritter), Richie (Harry Anderson), Eddie (Dennis Christopher) and Beverley (Annette O'Toole). Richie immediately wants to leave but the force of friendship keeps him there for a while.

They laugh and joke and eat and drink until the fortune cookies come, each containing something to terrify them. In addition to the things mentioned above, the other cookies contain, a bird foetus, something we don't fully see that has large pincers and what looks like tarantula legs sprout from one just before they run out of the room.
9. Having fled the restaurant, the friends gather in the library where Mike works. Ben suggests a drink to calm their nerves while they talk, but when they open the refrigerator, several balloons fly out followed by what nasty surprise?

Answer: A severed head

When Mike Hanlon makes the calls, they all rush back to Derry, except Stan. Stan was caught by IT and saw IT's 'deadlights' - the pure evil glow that comes from the creature that seems to put the victims in a catatonic state. This frightens him so much that he takes his own life rather than face IT again.

The severed head they see is Stan, but it is the creature talking. It tells them, "It's true what they say, we all float down here, and you will too. They all float!"
10. When Ben is in the hotel room with Beverley he is thrilled when she kisses him. He is then horrified when he looks in the mirror and realises it isn't really her. Which of these is NOT one of the obvious signs it isn't Beverley?

Answer: She has no reflection

They are in a small hotel with a beautiful sitting room. Beverley is cold, so Ben offers to go upstairs to get her shawl. While in there, Beverley comes in, quotes the poem he wrote, and kisses him. He is still in love with her and, having lost the weight as well as become an award winning actor, he has more confidence. Ben is thrilled until he looks in the mirror and sees clown pants and white and red makeup on his cheek. Finally the clown shows itself and says "Kiss me, fat boy!"
11. After Mike Hanlon is stabbed in the hotel room, the gang rush him to hospital. Does he survive?

Answer: Yes

After Henry Bowers and his gang chases the kids into the sewers, two were killed. Henry's hair turned pure white and he went mad after seeing the 'deadlights'. He ended up confessing to the murders of all the children and was put in a secure mental institute where he is found by IT 30 years later.

As the adults come back to kill Pennywise, IT hypnotises Henry into escaping and killing them. Henry gets to Mike and stabs him but his plan is ruined when Ben and Eddie hear the commotion. They rush to Mike's aid and in the chaos, Henry is stabbed and killed with his own knife. Mike, however, survives the attack to present Bill with the original silver earrings he had gone back alone into the sewer to find!
12. Bill Denbrough's wife, Audra, is worried about him and follows him to Derry. She is consequently taken by IT before she reaches him. What does Bill find in the tunnels that tells him she is there?

Answer: Purse

Bill is a novelist and currently advising on the movie adaptation of one of his books, which is making him very irritated and distant with her. This is when he gets the call from Mike. Although he lives up to the promise they all made as children to go back if IT ever returned, his childhood stutter immediately comes back. Wanting to save her marriage, Audra follows him in the hope it will prove she supports him.

As she doesn't know the way, she stops at a gas station for directions but something is not right.

The attendant says, "Just past the Barrens, where they used to play when they were kids." She thanks him uneasily and gets ready to leave but then he says, "Don't you wanna balloon, Miss Denbrough?" When she looks back it's the clown who hypnotises her with the 'deadlights'. Later, when the group returns to the sewer, Bill finds her purse not far from the entrance and almost has a breakdown.

His stuttering returns and he blames himself. Then he realises he has yet another grudge against IT and pulls himself together.
13. After Beverley gets a direct hit with the catapult, what do the friends do to ensure the creature is dead?

Answer: Remove its heart

IT has taken on its true form to feed, which appears to be a giant mutant spider. Having been taunted and hunted by this creature as children, they want to be sure it is dead. Beverley strikes it in the chest with one of the silver earrings, which obviously wounds it.

As it crawls away, Richie proclaims "This isn't over, if that thing comes back when I'm 70!" They attack it with their bare hands and rip its heart from its body. As its 'deadlights' go out, they know it is really dead.
14. How many of the original 'Lucky Seven' are still alive after the final confrontation?

Answer: five

We know Stan has committed suicide so that's down to six. In the final battle, the creature has become its true form, some kind of giant spider. Eddie sees his friends in danger and once again brandishes his inhaler. His efforts do nothing except divert its attention and the creature grabs him and lifts him into the air. Thanks to this distraction, Beverley manages a clean shot with the silver earring that severely wounds the creature. IT drops Eddie from a great height and tragically, he dies in the arms of his friends.
15. What is the name of Bill's childhood bike that frees Audra from IT's deadlights and brings her mind back?

Answer: Silver

As a child he loved his bike and used to shout "Hi ho, Silver, away! Having saved Audra from IT's lair, she is still comatose because of the deadlights. Bill remembers how he once saved Stan from IT by riding away at full speed with him on the back. In a last grasp of hope, he puts Audra on the handlebars of Silver and pedals as fast as he can.

As they race down the hill, narrowly missing traffic, Bill prays, and somehow the speed and his pure hope brings her back.
