She messed up rice dishes two weeks running. One week it was burnt rice, which she felt might have been sabotaged by someone-the next week it was undercooked rice. Yet she stayed on. The chefs are judged strictly on their performance in the most current elimination challenge.

Spike was always wearing a hat. They were always tilted to one side in a jaunty way, making him look like a hipster chef. Spike had some tricks up his sleeve, which ultimately did him no good. He picked frozen scallops to prepare in a dish for an elimination challenge, they turned out mushy, and Spike was out.

Bourdain was a tough judge, but fair and well-respected by the chefs. His book "Kitchen Confidential" tells the real story of what goes on in the busy kitchen of the nice restaurant you're dining in.

Dale, Lisa and Spike did not mesh well as a team. Dale took the position of executive chef, which led to his elimination when his team lost the challenge. Spike made himself scarce, stayed in the front of the restaurant while Dale and Lisa cooked and fought, and managed to survive. Dale prepared a dish (scallops with butterscotch sauce) which will live in infamy. (Judge Bourdain said it was the worst single dish he had ever tasted on "Top Chef".) Lisa didn't do much better, and many people felt she should have been the one to go.

Although none of the chefs were experienced cake bakers, Lisa and Stephanie stepped up and made cakes that pleased the bride and groom and the judges.

Richard Blais came to "Top Chef" with his reputation already made. He was one of the top contestants from the beginning, nearly always did very well in the challenges, and seemed like a nice guy to boot.

The chefs had to use an item from each food group to create a nutritious box lunch. The lunch had to include a lean protein, a whole grain, a fruit and a vegetable. Dale was the winner, serving bison in lettuce cups, and Andrew was eliminated for omitting one of the food groups from his offering. His error was brought to the judge's attention by Lisa, which did nothing to improve her popularity with the group or the viewers.

They were each given a pig to butcher, and picked three pig parts to make their dishes. The competition in Puerto Rico took place six months after the previous episode, when the final four were chosen. Stephanie, Richard, Antonia and Lisa were the four semi-finalists.

The actual challenge was to cook a four course meal, but it would consist of a fish course, a poultry course, a red meat course, and a dessert. The chef's dishes were inventive, interesting, and for the most part successful.

Stephanie Izard won it-the first female chef to do so. The final competition was a surprise, since Richard Blais, in his words, "choked". Lisa Fernandes did well with an Asian menu, her specialty. But Stephanie out-cooked her in the end. The particular favorite with the judges: roasted lamb medallions with mushrooms, braised pistachios and blackberries. They also liked her seared quail breast with butter poached lobster ravioli. She won $100,000 to help start up a new restaurant, and a gourmet vacation in the French Alps. Stephanie also won "Fan Favorite", selected by the viewers.
