Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the substances frequently mentioned in "Star Trek" is deuterium. Does deuterium exist in the real world?

Answer: Yes

Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen.
2. During the wake in the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis", Captain Riker mentions a song that Data was trying to whistle one day in the holodeck when they first met, but he could not remember the title of the song. What was the title of the song?

Answer: Pop Goes the Weasel

In "Encounter at Farpoint", Riker (Jonathan Frakes) went looking for Data in the holodeck and found him trying to whistle "Pop Goes the Weasel". But Data (Brent Spiner) had a difficult time with the final bar. When Riker finished the song for him, Data said "How easily you humans do that."
3. In "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Kirk and Co. used the Sun as a "slingshot" to go back in time to 1987. In which "TOS" episode did the Enterprise (accidentally) first use the slingshot effect to go back in time?

Answer: Tomorrow Is Yesterday

In "Tomorrow Is Yesterday", the Enterprise encounters a "black star," which threw them back in time to the late 1960s, in low orbit of Earth. There, the ship is regarded as a UFO and Captain John Christopher, USAF, is dispatched to investigate.
FAST FACT -- This episode was originally intended as the second half of a two-parter, with "The Naked Time" as the first half. But because of budget constraints, the two parts were split into separate episodes. In "The Naked Time", Scotty's cold start of the engines in the climax resulted in the ship going back in time three days.
4. Which of the following events did NOT take place at the beginning of Season 3 of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (episode "The Search, Part 1")?

Answer: Sisko is promoted to Captain

At the start of Season 3, the Defiant arrives. With Sisko and the Defiant is Lt. Commander Michael Eddington (Kenneth Marshall) of Starfleet Security, which put off Odo to no end. But when Odo boards the Defiant for its first trip through the wormhole, he is suddenly drawn to a distant nebula.

After the Defiant is attacked by the Jem'Hadar, Odo takes Kira to a shuttlecraft and finds a rogue planet within the nebula. There, he discovers beings like himself who call themselves Changelings. Sisko's promotion is mentioned in Part 2 of this episode, but it was part of a Vorta-induced hallucination. Sisko did not become Captain until "The Adversary", at the end of Season 3.
5. On "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", Kai Winn Adami (Louise Fletcher) is the spiritual leader of the Bajoran people. What was the surname of the previous Kai?

Answer: Opaka

Kai Opaka (Camille Saviola) was the first spiritual leader of Bajor in the first few weeks after the Cardassians ended their occupation. It was she who first acknowledged Commander Sisko as their Emissary of the Prophets, a title that Sisko was reluctant to accept for most of the seven years he was on Deep Space Nine.

After leading a life of seclusion, Kai Opaka decided to visit DS9 one day, marking the first time she had ever left Bajor. On that day, she accompanied Sisko and others in a runabout to the Gamma Quadrant.

But the ship crashed on a moon with unusual properties: If a person dies, that person is brought back to life; but that person must stay on the moon in order to live. Opaka died in the crash. As a result, she had to remain behind to stay alive. Also on the moon were two long-warring factions. Opaka accepted this as her destiny, so that she may try to bring a peaceful end to the fighting ("Battle Lines").
6. Worf never set foot on Deep Space Nine until he was assigned there.

Answer: False

Three years prior to his assignment to Deep Space Nine, the Enterprise-D paid a visit to the station to provide assistance in rebuilding the infrastructure on Bajor. While there, Worf encountered a Yridian trader named Jaglom Shrek (James Cromwell), who had information for him regarding Mogh, Worf's father ("TNG" episode "Birthright, Part I").
7. What is the name of Jean-Luc Picard's mother?

Answer: Yvette

Jean-Luc Picard's parents are Maurice and Yvette. Adele was his often-discussed aunt (well-known for her recipes), and Marie was his sister-in-law (seen in the episode "Family"). Phillipa was the first name of Captain Louvios (Amanda McBroom), the JAG officer with whom Picard had had a tempestuous relationship in the past, and who acted as the judge in the case that determined Data's status as a living being ("The Measure of a Man").
8. Who was the first commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) (CLUE: It was NOT Christopher Pike)?

Answer: Robert April

All that is mentioned of Captain April's exploits as commander of the most famous ship in Federation history can be found in a few "Star Trek" novels. Nonetheless, Gene Roddenberry's original treatment for "Star Trek" named the first captain as Robert April. Though no actors have ever played Captain April, a rare "head shot" photograph of Roddenberry in a prototype "TOS" uniform, taken in 1965, has been accepted as a picture of Captain April.
NOTE -- An animated Commodore April has been seen on the animated series of 1973-74, in the episode "The Counter-Clock Incident".
9. Actor James Cromwell (Zephram Cochrane of "Star Trek: First Contact") has appeared in each "Star Trek" television series since "The Next Generation".

Answer: False

James Cromwell has appeared in the "TNG" episodes "The Hunted" and "Birthright, Parts 1 & 2", the "DS9" episode "Starship Down", and (as Cochrane) he had a cameo in the "Enterprise" pilot episode "Broken Bow". He did not make an appearance on "Voyager".
10. Professor Stephen Hawking played himself in a brief scene in the "TNG" sixth season closer "Descent, Part 1". Which of the following is the only other person credited as playing himself/herself in the history of "Star Trek"?

Answer: Maury Ginsberg

Maury Ginsberg appeared as himself in the "Voyager" episode "Death Wish". Here, Q (John de Lancie) demonstrates to Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) that Quinn (Gerrit Graham) was instrumental in Ginsberg's role as a spotlight operator at Woodstock, and later introduced him to the woman who would become his wife. Dr. Jemison, the first female African-American astronaut (who was selected by a panel of which Nichelle Nichols was a member), was a Transporter Officer in the "TNG" episode "Second Chances". Melvin Belli, a prominent attorney in the 1960s, played the Guardian Angel in the "TOS" episode "And the Children Shall Lead". And Sgt. Naradzay was billed simply as "Marine Sergeant" in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". FUN FACT -- By the way, after filming his scene in Descent", Professor Hawking was given a tour of the "TNG" soundstage.

When they reached the Engineering set, he looked at the warp drive and said "I'm working on that!"
11. What does "GNDN" mean?

Answer: Goes Nowhere Does Nothing

This "in-joke," featured in several episodes and movies, shows the letters "GNDN" labelled on various pipes and ducts on the ships seen in "Star Trek". While they look impressive, they are not practical (In other words, they serve no purpose). Therefore, these pipes and ducts go nowhere and do nothing!
12. Diane Warren wrote the song "Where My Heart Will Take Me", which is the theme to "Star Trek: Enterprise". Who sang the version used in the title sequence?

Answer: Russell Watson

Russell Watson is the singer of the theme to "Enterprise". Originally entitled "Faith of the Heart", the song "Where My Heart Will Take Me" was a hit on the Contemporary Christian charts in 2001 (around the same time as the series premiere), and various versions of the song do exist, including one from Rod Stewart in 1998 for the movie "Patch Adams".
Russell Johnson played the Professor on "Gilligan's Island". Russell Simmons was the creator of HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" and "Def Poetry Jam" series. Russell Jones is better known as rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard.
13. Leonard McCoy was the third Chief Medical Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701).

Answer: False

Actually, he was the fourth. Captain April's wife, Sara (voice of Nichelle Nichols in the "TAS" episode "The Counter-Clock Incident"), was the ship's first CMO. Dr. Philip Boyce (John Hoyt) served under Captain Pike's command ("The Cage"). Dr. Mark Piper (Paul Fix) was the Enterprise's first CMO under the command of Captain Kirk ("Where No Man Has Gone Before"). Then Dr. McCoy signed on after Dr. Piper's departure.
(My thanks to FunTrivia member batman365x for the info on Sara April)
14. What is the name of Quark's father?

Answer: Keldar

Though he died before the start of the series, Quark's father is mentioned by name in the "DS9" episode "The House of Quark".
15. How many people on Earth were killed by the Xindi weapon that struck in 2153?

Answer: 7 million

Initial estimates of the attack were put at one to three million deaths. After cutting a mile-wide swath into the Earth stretching from Florida to Venezuela, the final death toll was placed at seven million people, including Commander Tucker's sister ("Enterprise" episode "The Expanse").
16. Gene Roddenberry's nickname, "The Great Bird of the Galaxy," is derived from a line spoken by Sulu in the "TOS" episode "Charlie X".

Answer: False

Actually, it was "The Man Trap". During this episode, Sulu (George Takei) is in the ship's botany lab when Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) delivers him lunch. Upon seeing her with food in hand, Sulu says "May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet." Fans of "Star Trek" the world over have since embraced Gene Roddenberry as the Great Bird himself.
17. What is the name of the navigator of the Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the animated "Star Trek" series?

Answer: Arex

Lt. Arex (voice of James Doohan) was the three-armed alien navigator during the animated series of 1973-74. Though not much is known of him, he and the feline-like relief communications officer, Lt. M'Ress (voice of Majel Barrett), are regarded as among the first principal characters in "Star Trek" who were truly alien in appearance, preceded only by Spock (Leonard Nimoy).
18. With "The Next Generation", children became an integral part of life in "Star Trek". Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher of "The Next Generation") and Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko of "Deep Space Nine") were the first two adolescent principal cast members in the history of the franchise. Which one was younger when his series premiered?

Answer: Lofton

Cirroc Lofton was born August 7, 1978, and "DS9" premiered the week of January 3, 1993, which made him 14 years, 5 months old at the time. Wil Wheaton was born July 29, 1972, and "TNG" premiered the week of September 28, 1987, which put his age at 15 years, 2 months.

Therefore, Cirroc Lofton was younger at the start of "DS9" than Wil Wheaton was at the start of "TNG" (Information from startrek.com and imdb.com).
19. What are OkudaGrams?

Answer: Graphic displays seen on "Star Trek" shows and movies

OkudaGrams are named for long-time "Star Trek" graphics designer Michael Okuda, who came up with the LCARS interface layout seen from "The Next Generation" through "Voyager", as well as the movies from "Generations" through "Nemesis"; he also designed an all-new layout for "Enterprise". Also, he and his wife, Denise, are responsible for the franchise's continuity.

While the person credited for the term is unknown, whenever an episode or movie needs a custom graphic image, the film crew requests an OkudaGram!
20. On what date did Gene Roddenberry die?

Answer: October 24, 1991

Born in El Paso, Texas, on August 19, 1921, The Great Bird passed away from a heart attack on October 24, 1991, on the Los Angeles area. A small portion of his remains, which were cremated, were shot into space from a rocket launched at Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, a few years later. His memory was honored at the beginning of both parts of "Unification", the "TNG" episode in which Spock, now an ambassador, is suspected of defecting to Romulus. This was a fitting tribute, because Spock was Gene Roddenberry's favorite "Star Trek" character.
NOTE -- According to the text commentary provided by Michael Okuda for the DVD release of "Star Trek VI", Gene Roddenberry's death was on October 12, 1991. This information, however, is incorrect. I have conducted research at four different sources to verify Gene Roddenberry's death as October 24, 1991:

www.rootsweb.com -- basic information from official vital records
www.imdb.com
www.findagrave.com
The online archives of the Los Angeles Times.
