Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the freighter of which Kasidy Yates was the captain in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"?

Answer: Xhosa

After meeting Captain Sisko, Kasidy Yates took a job working for the Bajoran Ministry of Commerce. This enabled her to continue transporting cargo on the Xhosa and live on Deep Space Nine as well.

Commander Eddington persuaded Captain Sisko to follow the Xhosa in 2372 by convincing him that Kasidy was working for the Maquis. However, whilst Sisko was monitoring the Xhosa, Eddington managed to steal twelve industrial replicators that were bound for Cardassia.

Question by Daddy19
2. In "Star Trek: Enterprise", Degra was a member of the Xindi species, but which part did he belong to?

Answer: Primate

Of the six species that developed on the planet Xindus, the Avians were extinct and the others were brought together by the Guardians, who convinced them to launch an attack on Earth. This brought Captain Jonathan Archer and the Enterprise NX-01 into the Delphic Expanse to try and stop them.

Question by Daddy19
3. Which alien species (example of a member of the species follow the name), could be described as being strongly xenophobic?

Answer: Varro (Derran Tal)

A xenophobic species would be one which distrusts, is afraid of, or even hates those who are different such as strangers and aliens. The Voyager crew helped the Varro who had been traveling for several hundred years on a generational ship ("VOY": "The Disease"). The Varro had bad experiences with other species during their long journey which caused them to be very xenophobic.

The leader of the Varro only very reluctantly accepted help from Janeway because his ship was having such major problems and she had instructed her crew not to associate with the Varro crew outside of when doing repairs.

Ensign Kim fell in love with a Varro woman, Derran Tal, and disobeyed orders by having an intimate relationship with her. Derran Tel was part of a rebel faction who wanted to break away from the group because they felt very oppressed and wanted freedom. This group sabotaged the generational ship so it would break apart and each section could become its own ship free to leave or stay.

4. She had to fire him when his thoughts about her became too... erotic. What was the name of Lwaxana Troi's assistant before Mr. Homm?

Answer: Xelo

In her first appearance on "TNG", Deanna's mother came to see her daughter married off - a prearranged marriage. The episode was called "Haven", and while we never saw Xelo, Lwaxana felt the need to explain about him.

Question by reedy
5. The "TOS" episode title styled him as "Charlie X", but what was Charlie's real last name?

Answer: Evans

Played by Robert Walker, Jr., Charlie Evans was a 17-year-old boy who had been stranded for 14 years alone on the planet Thasus after the transport ship he'd been on had crashed. Somehow, Charlie had developed amazing mental abilities, but without any human socializing in his childhood, Charlie was dangerously unmanageable. A Thasian ship eventually comes to reclaim him, realizing that Charlie was no longer fit to live among humans, due to the powers that they had bestowed upon him.

Question by reedy
6. ("Star Trek: Voyager") What is another name for a Class Y planet?

Answer: Demon Class

("VOY": "Demon") Voyager visited a Class Y planet (demon class) so the crew could get deuterium. Class Y planets are very hazardous with an atmosphere poisonous to human life, extremely high temperatures, and dangerous radiation.

Kim and Paris had to wear environmental suits when they explored looking for deuterium. While on the surface, both of them were duplicated by an unknown lifeform they came to refer to as "Silver Blood."

Question by christi_dove.
7. What was the name of the sister ship to the USS Enterprise-D, as seen in "TNG" episodes "Where Silence Has Lease" and "Contagion"?

Answer: USS Yamato

In "Where Silence Has Lease" a copy of the Yamato was created by an alien called Nagilum as part of a testing of the Enterprise-D crew. In "Contagion" we saw the destruction of the Yamato as the result of a warp core breach (initiated by an ancient Iconian software transmission).

Question by reedy
8. Which best describes the Klingon rite of Ya'nora kor ("TNG": "Firstborn")?

Answer: This rite allows a highly respected member of the house, the gin'tak, to question the fitness of the head of the house.

In the "Star Trek: TNG" episode "Firstborn", a fully grown Alexander, went back in time to make sure his younger self is raised as a true Klingon warrior. When Worf refused to send the young Alexander away to a Klingon school, K'mtar threatened to use the Ya'nora kor to declare Worf unfit to raise his son. [Memory Alpha, "Ya'nora_kor," http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Ya'nora_kor (as of May 26, 2011).]

A Klingon child goes through the first Rite of Ascension before 13 years of age to declare himself ready to follow the path of a Klingon warrior.

The r'uustai was the Klingon rite of bonding, or brotherhood. We see this ritual performed in the "TNG" episode "The Bonding" when Worf bonds with a boy after his mother dies on an away mission that he headed. [Memory Alpha, "R'uustai," http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/R'uustai (as of May 26, 2011)].

The Klingon Death Ritual takes place when a warrior is dying or has just died. ("TNG": "Heart of Glory"). The eyes of the dead warrior are held open and the living Klingon witnesses roar loudly.

Question by christi_dove.
9. Yamok Sauce was a popular Klingon accompaniment and it was often served with Gagh.

Answer: False

Yamok Sauce mainly accompanied Cardassian dishes, although there were a couple of "DS9" episodes that referred to it accompanying some foods from Earth as well.

One of Quark's employees ordered a significant quantity of Yamok Sauce after the Cardassian occupation had ended. Unable to do anything with it, Quark gave it to Jake and Nog. They were able to make a series of trades to make some money out of it after all.

Question by Daddy19
10. To which race of merchants did Jaglom Shrek belong? In the "TNG" two-part episode "Birthright", he provided Worf with information that his father was still alive.

Answer: Yridians

The Yridians we have seen in "TNG" and "DS9" have been merchants selling either goods or information, although they have not always been trustworthy.

Jaglom Shrek met Worf aboard Deep Space Nine, whilst the Klingon was still on the Enterprise. He told Worf that his father had not died at Khitomer but had been captured by Romulans. Worf was concerned that if this had happened, it would dishonour the House of Mogh for three generations. Fortunately, Shrek's information turned out to be inaccurate.

Question by Daddy19
11. What was the name of Gul Dukat's illegitimate daughter, who he went to rescue in the "DS9" episode "Indiscretion"?

Answer: Ziyal

Gul Dukat had a romantic liaison with Tora Naprem when he was prefect of Terok Nor. Tora Ziyal was the result of that relationship. Both Ziyal and her mother were aboard the Ravinok when it was attacked by the Breen.

Major Kira also had a friend aboard the Ravinok and when she learned where the ship had crashed she went to find it. Gul Dukat accompanied her, although his initial intention was to kill Ziyal so his affair could not be used against him by his enemies.

Question by Daddy19
12. (Z is for Zek) Due to her relationship with Zek, the Ferengi Grand Nagus, Rom and Quark's mother, Ishka, was really the power behind the throne, when it came to the strength of the Ferengi economy.

Answer: True

We learn in the "DS9" episode "Ferengi Love Songs" that Zek was having major memory problems and Ishka had been helping him run the Ferengi Alliance by giving him financial advice and guidance.

Zek and Ishka eventually married. Later on due to her example, Zek instituted reforms that gave more rights to females such as the right to wear clothes in public ("Profit and Lace"). This caused great upheaval on Ferenginar and problems for Zek!

Question by christi_dove.
13. What was the name of the illness that caused Betazoids to involuntarily project their emotions onto others?

Answer: Zanthi Fever

While on "DS9" in the episode "Fascination", Lwaxana Troi projected her feelings for Odo onto various members of the station members. Those affected included Jadzia Dax, Quark, Major Kira, Commander Sisko, Doctor Bashir, and Vedek Bareil. Odo, ironically, was unaffected.

Question by reedy
14. True or False. In "Broken Bow," the pilot episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise," we first see the species Xindi, as they pursue a Klingon who crashed on Earth in Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

Answer: False

This statement is false because the species who pursued the Klingon, Klaang, were not the Xindi but two genetically enhanced Suliban. I must admit seeing one of Suliban completely flatten himself like a pancake to slide under a locked door was pretty cool.

Doctor Phlox performed an examination of one of the Suliban who died during an invasion of the Enterprise. He found many genetic enhancements such as eyes with compound retinas, subcutaneous pigment sacs, and modified lungs which could work in many types of atmospheres. These biological enhancements along with advanced technologies in even the clothes they wore gave them many unusual abilities such as camouflage, shape-shifting, and vastly improved senses. These genetically modified Suliban were part of a terrorist group.

The Xindi were a coalition of several species which evolved on the same homeworld who prove to be terrible enemies of Earth. The Enterprise encounters them later in the series.

Question by christi_dove.
15. Z is for Zarabeth. Which actress guest starred as Zarabeth on the "Star Trek: TOS" episode "All Our Yesterdays." This is the episode in which Spock and McCoy go back in time thousands of years to the planet Sarpeidon's ice age where they meet one human-Zarabeth. Due to a series of Polaroid television commercials in the '70s with James Garner (of "The Rockford Files" fame), it was once thought by many she and Garner were married.

Answer: Mariette Hartley

Of course I am referring to Mariette Hartley in this question. I really thought she had at one time been married to James Gardner! I just found out to the contrary when doing research for this quiz. I have always thought Mariette Hartley was just beautiful in this episode as Zarabeth.

As most "Star Trek: TOS" fans know, Joan Collins guest starred as Edith Keeler in the fan favorite "The City on the Edge of Forever." Collins is also well remembered for her time playing Alexis Colby on "Dynasty." Julie Newmar was in the "TOS" episode "Friday's Child." She is perhaps better known in her role of the original Catwoman on "Batman." Diana Muldaur, not only played Dr. Katherine Pulaski on "Star Trek: TNG" during season 2, she guest starred on "The Original Series" in the episodes "Return to Tomorrow" and "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" You may also remember Muldaur for her role of Rosalind Shays on "L.A. Law."

Also, if you are interested in a follow-up of the episode "All our Yesterdays," I highly recommend the two "Star Trek" novels (noncanon) "Yesterday's Son" and "Time for Yesterday" by A.C. Crispin. They both feature Spock and Zarabeth's son! I own both these novels.
