The three admirals all play host to smaller parasite creatures that affect their judgment, strength and memory. These parasites are found to be trying to takeover key areas of Starfleet as a prelude to invasion.

Remmick is hosting the mother creature as Picard and Riker discover at the climax of the episode.

Both Remmick and Quinn appear in the earlier episode "Coming of Age". They are testing and evaluating the Enterprise crew on that occasion and Quinn's attitude in comparison to how he acts at the onset of this episode is how Picard first realises that something is wrong.

Admitting his error in judgment, Picard asks for Q to return them. When Q has returned the ship to the Alpha Quadrant, Picard berates Q for letting his crewmembers die. Even so, they must now be ready for the impending arrival of the Borg.

The Yamato appears in the teaser for "Contagion" and is promptly destroyed. The rest of the episode is spent trying to ascertain why that happened and how to avoid suffering the same fate.

Wesley spent most of his time at the helm during this series. A variety of characters replaced him when Wil Wheaton left the show (of which Ensign Gates was one). Commander Riker piloted the Enterprise-E in the film "Insurrection" using the manual steering column. (They still have joysticks in the 24th Century!) Captain Picard relieved Wesley and piloted the Enterprise to safety.
