Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Channel 4 began broadcasting in the UK in 1982, and one of its flagship shows was the soap opera "Brookside". In which city was it set?

Answer: Liverpool

"Brookside" ran for 21 years from 1982 until 2003. It was set in Brookside Close in Liverpool, and was renowned for its realistic and controversial storylines.
2. "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet" was a comedy-drama featuring a bunch of unemployed British labourers working on the side. The first series, broadcast in 1983, saw the lads working on a building site in which country?

Answer: Germany

The three main characters were all from Newcastle, but were joined by other regulars from various cities. The first series was set in Dusseldorf, with the second taking place in Derbyshire and Spain.
3. Who played the eponymous hero in all four series of "Blackadder" which aired in the 1980s?

Answer: Rowan Atkinson

All four options were regular cast members, but it was Atkinson who played the part of Blackadder. The four series were set in completely different eras - the middle ages, the Elizabethan era, the Regency period, and World War I.
4. Originating from a one-off drama called "Woodentop", "The Bill" was a long-running series debuting in 1984 featuring which type of workers?

Answer: Police

"The Bill" featured officers at the fictional "Sun Hill" police station in London. One of the longest-running police series ever, it broadcast from 1984 until 2010.
5. Jools Holland, Paula Yates and Leslie Ash were among the presenters of which music programme that aired between 1982 and 1987?

Answer: The Tube

"The Tube" was broadcast on Channel 4, and featured music acts who actually played live rather than miming to their hit songs. Sadly, the show was brought to an end partly due to Holland's "industrial" language.
6. The sitcom "Hi-de-Hi!" debuted on BBC 1 in 1980, and featured the adventures of the staff at the fictional Maplins holiday camp in Crimpton-on-Sea. What colour of coats did the majority of the workers wear?

Answer: Yellow

The staff at Maplins wore yellowcoats. This was based on the real-life holiday camps of Butlins, where they wore redcoats, and Pontins, where bluecoats were the order of the day. "Hi-de-Hi!" made household names of stars such as Paul Shane, Su Pollard and Ruth Madoc.
7. Beginning in 1981, John Nettles played the eponymous character in the detective series Bergerac. Which island of the British Isles was the setting for this series?

Answer: Jersey

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, and was the setting for this series featuring John Nettles as Jim Bergerac. Jersey is geographically closer to France than the UK, and many of the scenes were filmed in the former country.
8. "Treasure Hunt" was one of the first shows shown on Channel 4 when it began broadcasting in 1982. Who was the original "skyrunner" who helped the studio-bound contestants find the treasure?

Answer: Anneka Rice

Kenneth Kendall was the host in the studio, but the real action took place in the open air, as Anneka Rice was directed by helicopter to various parts of the UK (and later overseas) to try and find the treasure by clue-solving contestants.

Annabel Croft succeeded her in 1989, with Suzi Perry the last "skyrunner" when the series was briefly resurrected in 2002-03.
9. "Howard's Way" made its BBC debut in 1985, and, apart from a great deal of adultery, the characters devoted a lot of time to which activity?

Answer: Sailing

"Howard's Way" was set in the fictional village of Tarrant, near Southampton. When the stars weren't leaping into bed with each other's spouses, they spent time in the local boatyard or sailing on the Solent.
10. "Tenko" was a BBC drama series which ran from 1981-84, and featured female prisoners-of-war who had been captured by the Japanese in which city?

Answer: Singapore

"Tenko" was set during World War II, and featured female prisoners captured by the Japanese in 1942, following the invasion of Singapore. "Tenko" was the Japanese word for "roll-call".
