Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, "Bat Masterson" was based on the adventures of the title character. "Bat" was just his nickname, though. What was the real name of "Bat" Masterson? (This was mentioned periodically on the show.)

Answer: William Barkley Masterson

Believe it or not, "Bat" Masterson was a real person. Living from 1853 to 1921, he served as a buffalo hunter, army scout, professional gambler and finally a sports columnist for the "New York Morning Telegraph."
2. Unlike many shows, "Bat Masterson" featured only one regular cast member. The cast of a particular episode would be filled by several guest stars. Who played Bat Masterson himself?

Answer: Gene Barry

Gene Barry (1919-2009) also appeared on television in "Burke's Law"/"Amos Burke: Secret Agent" (1963-1966) and on Broadway in "La Cage Aux Folles" (1983).The other three choices all appeared on the show as guest stars, but were better known for other shows. Alan Hale was the Skipper on "Gilligan's Island" (1964-1967). Ross Martin was Artemus Gordon on "The Wild, Wild West" (1965-1969). James Best was Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on "The Dukes of Hazzard" (1979-1985).
3. "Bat Masterson" appeared during an era when Westerns were popular on television. How many seasons was "Bat Masterson" on the air?

Answer: 3

"Bat Masterson" was on NBC-TV for three seasons from 1958 to 1961. The premiere episode, "Double Showdown," was broadcast on October 8, 1958. The show lasted for 107 episodes.
4. The show always opened with a narrator setting the scene--often including the date and the name of the town where the episode occurred. Which statement was also always included in the opening?

Answer: Bat Masterson--The man who became a legend in his own time.

Bill Baldwin and Bob Lemond were the two narrators during the run of the show. A few lines of narration with a when and where and you were into the show. Old "Bat" sure got around the West in a hurry.
5. Bat Masterson was skilled with a gun--when he chose to use it. He considered his pistol a weapon of last resort. What other weapon was usually Bat Masterson's first choice?

Answer: His gold-tipped cane

He used his cane like a club as well as in other ways. It was part of his "dude" image. People underestimated him at their own peril. In one episode, he described the difference between using his cane and using his gun. To paraphrase, the first was temporary and the second was permanent.
6. While other on-screen parts usually changed from episode to episode, there were other roles that were more permanent. What role did Bill Lee play in each episode?

Answer: He sang the theme song.

Bill Lee (1916-1980) was a member of the quartet "The Mellomen". He provided the singing voice for Christopher Plummer in "The Sound of Music". You only heard the lyrics for the end credits. The opening credits featured the same song as an instrumental.
7. The closing credits showed the cover of a Bat Masterson biography on which the show was said to be "loosely" based. Who wrote this biography?

Answer: Richard O'Connor

O'Connor's biography was published in 1957. He was actually born in Quebec. He and his brothers James and Ed each served as lawmen at different times. Bat, in later life, was friends/acquaintances with President Theodore Roosevelt.
8. A production company was needed to put "Bat Masterson" together. Which company produced "Bat Masterson"?

Answer: ZIV

The show was produced by ZIV Television productions. They were also responsible for first run syndicated shows like "Sea Hunt" and "Highway Patrol." RCA, MTM, and the FBI had no connection to the show.
9. Bat Masterson was well known for his fancy clothing. Which item was *not* usually part of Bat's look?

Answer: Black shirt

Many of the stills I have seen of the Bat Masterson character have him wearing the black derby, black jacket and fancy vest with a white shirt. Bat Masterson outfits were marketed to children during the show's run.
10. Many stars appeared as guests on "Bat Masterson". Which star did *not* appear in an episode of "Bat Masterson"? (He would have been too busy on his own show at the time.)

Answer: James Garner

James Garner was probably too busy as the title character Bret Maverick on "Maverick" (1957-1962). James Coburn appeared in the episode "Six Feet of Gold". Lon Chaney, Jr., appeared in the episode "Bat Trap". William Conrad appeared in the episode "Stampede at Tent City".
