Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mistress Lucy owns the local tavern that Will often frequents. A freed slave from Africa, Lucy claims to be of the Odinani faith, but thinks to convert to the religion of which African people?

Answer: Maasai

Jocelyn Jee Esien, who plays Lucy, first came to prominence in 2003 in the BBC hidden camera show "3 Non-Blondes". Since then, in addition to appearing in "Upstart Crow", she has also made appearances in many TV series including "Holby City" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures".
2. When Robert Greene spots Will consuming wafers and wine in Mistress Lucy's pub, why does he (Greene) seek to condemn Will?

Answer: He thinks they are being used for Catholic communion

Following the reign of her Roman Catholic sister Mary I, Queen Elizabeth initially favoured a degree of toleration towards Catholics at the start of her reign. This ended following the publication of a 1570 papal decree that declared Elizabeth to not be a rightful monarch, and that she should be deposed.

After this, Catholics suffered increasing persecution, culminating in a 1585 law making it illegal to harbour Catholic priests, and treason for Jesuit or other priests to be in England.
3. During a period when Will finds himself particularly overworked, he uses the journey time between Stratford and London to complete the first draft of a play that Marlowe shows an interest in taking. Which play is it?

Answer: Edward II

One of the major theories about William Shakespeare is that it was in fact Christopher Marlowe who was responsible for writing much of Shakespeare's work. "Upstart Crow" flips this idea by having Will write a number of plays that are eventually attributed to Kit Marlowe - in the first series, Will mentions having given Kit both "Tamburlaine" and "Doctor Faustus", and subsequently hands over to him "The Jew of Malta".
4. When Will is finishing his great teen romance play, he needs to find a way of ending the balcony scene in a way that is heartfelt. Who gives him the idea that he ends up using?

Answer: Bottom

Will wants to have Juliet say that she needs Romeo to leave but wishes he could stay. To illustrate how this may be the case, Bottom recounts how, when he was a boy, he would capture songbirds by tying silken thread to their legs, allowing them to fly only to the length of the silk.

This leads Will to write "Tis almost morning, I would have thee gone. And yet no farther than a wanton's bird that lets it hop a little from his hand, like a poor prisoner in his twisted gyves and with a silk thread plucks it back again, so loving jealous of his liberty."
5. Will journeys to Verona to seek inspiration for his first full comedy play. He comes to write the ending to include a double wedding. How does this differ from what he has seen?

Answer: Only one couple marries

Will uses Kate and Marlowe's burgeoning relationship as inspiration for "Two Gentlemen of Verona". However, owing to Marlowe's roving eye, Kate finds herself thrown over and, as a way of getting over it, repeatedly punches Kit in the face.
6. Will's old schoolmaster, Simon Hunt, comes to stay at Will's house in Stratford and, while there, reveals himself as a Jesuit priest. Which member of Will's family is seduced by the presence of the old religion and takes communion from Hunt?

Answer: Will's mother

Will tells Bottom and Kate of the horrors inflicted on him by the tyrannical Simon Hunt and, although claims to be prepared to stand up to his old schoolmaster should they ever meet again, still finds himself cowering in fear when faced with his childhood nemesis. Hunt is played by actor Geoffrey Whitehead who, at the time of his appearance in "Upstart Crow", was a regular in two concurrently running BBC sitcoms, "Not Going Out" and "Still Open All Hours".
7. When Thomas Morley decides he wants his name as the title of Will's planned musical, which Will stridently objects to, who persuades Will to agree?

Answer: Richard Burbage

Richard Burbage is often described as English theatre's first great actor. The son of James Burbage, the founder of the first modern theatre in England, Burbage achieved fame in the 1590s with the Lord Chamberlain's Men, and played the title roles in the first performances of many of William Shakespeare's plays, including "Hamlet", "Othello" and "Macbeth".
8. When trying to determine the characteristics of his new heroine, Will brainstorms some ideas with Kate. Which term does Kate come up with?

Answer: Feisty

Will is notorious for inventing new words and phrases (whether he has actually invented them or not), but rarely thinks anyone else's is any good, which is why he suggests that Kate's invented word 'feisty' "just ain't gonna fly". Even though he later takes credit for inventing it with his family.
9. Robert Greene employs an actor to sabotage the upcoming production of Will's teen romance. What is his name?

Answer: Augustine Snootyloin

Although Snootyloin gains the information that Kate is lined up to play Juliet, thus breaking the law against 'lady actors', Greene refuses to pay him. As a result, Snootyloin gains revenge by taking Kate's place, thereby foiling Greene's plan to have Will arrested and the production closed.
10. Will is commissioned to write a play for the Queen's Christmas festivities, and we see Elizabeth I for the first time. Who plays the Queen?

Answer: Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson is regarded as one of the UK's finest comic actresses. A member of the Cambridge Footlights, Thompson first worked with Ben Elton in the 1982 sketch comedy series Alfresco, and subsequently in an episode of "The Young Ones". She appeared regularly on British television for most of the 1980s, before finding fame in Hollywood.
