Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Where Paradise Is Home"- In the first episode, the mystery began to unfold. Special Agent Ethan Burke found himself trapped in a town called Wayward Pines. But, in which US state was the town said to be?

Answer: Idaho

It was mentioned several times, by both townies and Ethan himself. Ethan (Matt Dillon) and another agent were traveling together to investigate the disappearance of two other agents. The pair was in an auto accident in town, and Ethan's partner was said to have been killed. Ethan located both of his missing agents, one dead and one alive, before the episode ended on a frantic attempt to find an exit.

When the camera panned up and away, it was revealed that the "town" was inside a crater like location surrounded by mountains on three sides.

There seemed to be no way out.
2. "Don't Discuss Your Life Before"- Ethan and Beverly (actress Juliette Lewis) tried to escape the town, but Beverly was caught and killed. Which of the town rules did the sheriff say was the reason for her execution?

Answer: She discussed the past/her life before

Before the public execution, Sheriff Pope (actor Terrence Howard) thanked everyone for being there. And, he extended extra thanks to Kate and Harold Ballinger (Carla Gugino and Reed Diamond) for "doing their civic duty and bringing this woman to justice". Beverly's reason for execution was not trying to escape, though that was one of the rules to be broken. She'd discussed the past at dinner with Kate, Harold, and Ethan. She revealed she had a daughter back in Portland. Pope stated that as her offense before he killed her (that she'd discussed the past).

The Wayward Pines town rules, posted in framed "Official Notice" signs about town, were as follows: "Do Not Try To Leave; Do Not Discuss The Past; Do Not Discuss Your Life Before; Always Answer The Phone If It Rings; and it ended with Work Hard, Be Happy, And Enjoy Your Life in Wayward Pines!"
3. "Our Town, Our Law"- Ethan's wife and son made it into Wayward Pines. When they tried to leave, who stopped them?

Answer: Sheriff Pope

Ethan met up secretly with Kate in the woods to discuss their situation, and his son Ben followed him. Kate told Ethan she had done just what he'd done, and tried everything in her 12 years there. Ethan told her he'd been with her just five weeks earlier. Ben reported to Theresa, his mom, that Ethan was with Kate, so she tried to leave town on foot. Pope caught up with them and aggressively tried to stop them, and then Ethan showed up.

While Pope was holding Ethan at gunpoint, Ben drove into him with his own police vehicle, and Ethan took the gun and shot him. Before he died, Pope told Ethan he did not want to know the truth, as it was way worse than he could even imagine.

He was right about that.
4. "One of Our Senior Realtors Has Chosen to Retire"- Ethan was appointed as the new sheriff after Pope's death.

Answer: True

Arlene brought him a cake and the mayor was there as well. Ben started his new school, Wayward Pines Academy, and Mrs. Fisher prompted started trying to make Ben mistrust his father. The retired realtor was played by Justin Kirk, who'd played Andy on "Weeds", and Charlie Bingham on "Modern Family". By 'retire', he was sentenced to be executed.
5. "The Truth"- During orientation Mrs. Fisher told the children about 'the truth'. She revealed the existence of humanoid creatures called what?

Answer: Abbies, short for Aberrations

Mrs. Fisher explained to Ben, Carrie, and Reed that if they made it through orientation, they'd be part of the "first generation" of Wayward Pines. She said only the truly exceptional made it through orientation, and only those deemed "ready" were asked to participate. She told them that these Abbies evolved in a harsh environment, had bird like talons on their fingers, were at the very top of the planetary food chain (I say throw them into the ocean with sharks), had great senses of smell and hearing, and were only a half percent different from the mammal from with they originated. That mammal was Homo sapien. The kids also learned that mankind, outside of Wayward Pines, had died out 2000 years earlier and it was actually the year 4028.

The Race is from the "Worldwar" series of books by Harry Turtledove, the Sleestaks are from the 1970s TV series "Land of the Lost", and the Visitors are from both the 1980s and 2000s versions of "V".
6. "Choices"- In episode six we learned that the first resident of Wayward Pines was a man named Charles Keen. What profession had Charles had before his cryo-sleep?

Answer: Doctor

During Dr. Pilcher's recounting to Ethan, we saw the evolution of the Wayward Pines project. Pilcher (aka as Dr. Jenkins) recruited Pope to help him kidnap people. Dr. Charles Keen was officially the first resident of the new town, as shown on his cryo-chamber. He'd lost his medical license because he'd over prescribed oxycodone to a patient and she'd died. The date he was put into his cryo-sleep was March 26, 1999.
Pope had been the guard at the front gate of Pilcher's research lab when he was chosen.

Chris Shields played Keen. He also played David Miller on the series "The 100".
7. "Betrayal"- Kate, Harold, and the insurrectionist group planned to blow up part of the fence surrounding the town. The bomb was detonated early, and injured which of these people?

Answer: Ben

Ethan was still sure of the story he'd been fed by Dr. Pilcher and his sister, Nurse Pam. He told parts of the story to his wife, Theresa, and his former partner, Kate. Kate was sure "they'd gotten to Ethan" to convince him that story was true. Ethan found a bomb inside his police truck, so he was bent on stopping the plot. Later, Kate told Theresa that she'd been informed not long after her arrival in Wayward Pines that she was part of a secret government experiment. Kate was told to be patient and expect to tested by someone she knew. So, which story was true? Was it the far future of 4028, or maybe just the near future of 2015? Ethan stopped Kate at the fence, but she was mainly a decoy. Harold had a bomb built inside a music box, which was on the back of a delivery truck headed to the fence.

Inside that truck was also Ben and Amy. Amy opened the box and started the bomb ticking down. When it blew, she and Ben were thrown through the side of the truck and both were badly injured.
8. "Friendliest Place on Earth"- A man named Reggie Hudson was punished for not following protocol during his surveillance job. How was he punished?

Answer: He was put back into his cryosleep

When it was discovered that Ruby had tricked the monitors by removing her implant, Pilcher/Jenkins realized others were probably doing it as well. He had Pam interview the surveillance team to see if anyone was helping the insurgents. She discovered one man had a sympathetic stance on the townsfolk. He admitted he'd turn off sound, blur, or even erase some recordings to spare the people from being punished. Pam did not report this to her brother, Pilcher, but he was watching all of the interviews. Reggie was one of the Wayward Pines volunteers, instead of one of the people forced in against their will, and Pam did not want him punished. Instead of the usual killing, Reggie was put back into his pod and into cryosleep. They could not have publicly executed him, as he was a behind the scenes person and the town did not know him. So, killing him served Pilcher no purpose.

Nicholas Carella played Reggie.
9. "A Reckoning"- Did Ethan kill Kate, and appease both Pilcher and the people of Wayward Pines?

Answer: No

Nurse Pam, whose loyalties were not quite certain, sent Theresa to find proof to convince Kate of the truth. Theresa led Ethan and Kate to the secret location underneath the empty, overgrown lot in town. They saw footage of documented cases that it was the future time of 4028.

The Golden Gate Bridge was mostly collapsed under the water, and Kate finally believed what Ethan had told her. So, they arranged to get the town gathered for Kate's reckoning. Instead of killing Kate, Kate and Ethan told everyone the truth.

They were backed up by Theresa, Arlene, Henrietta, and another young man. Mrs. Fisher, outraged, tried to defend Pilcher and his work. Theresa finally slapped her face to shut her up. Then, the lights all went out. Dr. Pilcher allowed the Abbies access to Wayward Pines. That'll teach those ungrateful pets.
10. "Cycle"- In the season one finale, Ben awoke at the very end. According to Amy, how much time had passed with him asleep?

Answer: 3 years and 4 months

Ben was hit in the head by debris inside the elevator shaft, near the end of the episode. When he awoke, his girlfriend Amy was a nurse. She explained that it had been three years and four months since he first became unconscious. He'd been put into suspension (cryosleep) after his injury, and it took Amy that long to convince the first generation leaders to let him awaken. She also said that all of the adults who'd led the rebellion had been put into suspension. Ben demanded his clothes and left the hospital to find he was once again inside the very controlled "utopia" of Wayward Pines. A statue had been erected to honor David Pilcher. The engraving below it read "David Pilcher Wayward Pines Visionary".

Creepy.
