Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ganta, like many other prisoners housed at Deadman Wonderland, discovers that he is a 'Deadman', one of a group of prisoners with a very special power. What power do the Deadmen all have in common?

Answer: The ability to use their own blood as a weapon

The ability to manipulate one's own blood is known as a Branch of Sin. It is caused by a parasite, the Nameless Worm, that lives in their bodies. When the Great Tokyo Earthquake occurred a decade before the series started, the Nameless Worm spread across Tokyo. In Ganta's case, he learns to form bullets out of his own blood.

Other notable Deadmen in the anime are Senji Kiyomasa, who forms blades out of his own blood; Minatsuki Takami, who can create blood whips attached to her hair; Karako Koshio, who uses her blood as a kind of armour; and Nagi Kengamine, who creates blood bombs. The manga also features Chaplin Sukegawa, a trans woman who makes thorns out of her blood, and Idaki Hitara, an old man who can set his blood on fire. The Deadmen live on G Ward, isolated from the rest of the prisoners.
2. Prisoners in Deadman Wonderland are forced to fight each other in gladiatorial matches for the amusement of the public. What are these matches known as?

Answer: Carnival Corpse

The prisoners in Deadman Wonderland wear collars that inject poison into their bloodstreams. Every three days, they can take a candy antidote, and one way to gain more candy is to participate in Carnival Corpse. Winners get given free candy and a cheque for a million Cast Points, prison currency which can also be used to buy candy.

As the name suggests, the matches often become death matches, although some Deadmen - such as Minatsuki and Senji, both of whom fight Ganta in Carnival Corpse battles, and Nagi - survived previous ones.

The fights take place on G Ward. Other prisoners are unaware of G Ward, believing its existence to be a rumour.
3. Many of the Deadmen, Ganta included, have nicknames. What theme do their nicknames have in common?

Answer: Birds

The nicknames are specifically given to Deadmen who participate in Carnival Corpse battles. Ganta is 'Woodpecker', Minatsuki is 'Hummingbird', Senji is 'Crow', Nagi is 'Owl', and Karako is 'Game Fowl'. The two manga characters, Chaplin and Idaki, are nicknamed 'Peacock' and 'Condor' respectively.

The nicknames are associated with a certain characteristic of the character (such as Minatsuki being 'Hummingbird' because she wears a flower in her hair); in Ganta's case, the woodpecker is also the subject of a nursery rhyme that appears as a recurring theme.
4. According to Minatsuki Takami, during the Great Tokyo Earthquake, what did her mother save instead of her?

Answer: A pot of primroses

Minatsuki seems shy and cute, and begs Ganta to protect her, but when the two fight in Carnival Corpse, she's revealed to be a vicious sadist. Yo, her brother, tries to intervene in the fight by dressing as a guard and sneaking into the arena, but Minatsuki beats him up, and reveals that their mother abandoned her during the Great Tokyo Earthquake. Minatsuki was hiding in a greenhouse and thought her mother had come to save her, only to see her mother run off with a flowerpot instead. Minatsuki later killed their father with her powers, after manipulating Yo into believing that their father was abusing her.

When Minatsuki was sent to Deadman Wonderland, Yo followed her in the hope of buying her freedom.
5. Prisoners who lose fights are punished by having a body part removed. When Minatsuki Takami loses her fight, she is sentenced to have a body part removed, and the part to be removed is chosen by a roulette machine. Another prisoner fixes the machine so that Minatsuki's punishment changes. What body part does Minatsuki have removed?

Answer: Her hair

In previous battles, Minatsuki had had one of her kidneys and part of her stomach removed. Similarly, Senji had his eye removed and now wears an eyepatch, and Nagi had his vocal cords removed and subsequently has to use a mechanical voice box to speak. After Nagi tinkers with the roulette machine, to Minatsuki's relief, her punishment is only a haircut.
6. Nagi Kengamine is a leader of a group of rebels within the prison known as Scar Chain, who are planning to escape and expose the secrets of Deadman Wonderland to the outside world. What is the name of the group sent to put them down?

Answer: The Undertakers

The Undertakers are different to Deadmen in that their abilities are not part of their bodies; instead, they have superpowered weapons called Worm Eaters, which can nullify Branches of Sin by oxidising blood. Makina, one of the prison guards, also wields one in the form of a sword.

The Undertakers were assembled by Tsunenaga Tamaki, the director of Deadman Wonderland, from among the prison's worst criminals. Notable Undertakers include Azuma Genkaku, a former monk and leader of the 1st Squad; Mozuri Gazuchi, an enormous muscular man who grew up in a forest, and leader of the 2nd Squad; Shinagawa Dokoku, Mozuri's assistant and a snake-like serial killer who made clothing out of his victims' hair and skin; and Hibana Daida, leader of the 3rd Squad, a little girl who murdered her abusive mother and her entire kindergarten class.
7. What was Senji Kiyomasa's job before he went to prison?

Answer: Police officer

Before doing time in Deadman Wonderland, Senji was a police officer, and used his Branch of Sin to defeat thugs. He and his fellow officers were assigned to Tokyo after the Great Tokyo Earthquake. The OVA 'Red Knife Wielder' explains his background in more detail; he protected a little boy, Izuru, from a gang known as Goreless Peace.

The gang tried to get Senji to join them but he refused, so they burned down the orphanage where Izuru lived, killing both him and Hinata, his caretaker. Senji fought and nearly killed their leader, but was talked out of it by Domon, his mentor. Ikazuchi, another member of Goreless Peace, challenged Senji to a fight, but Domon and Senji's other colleagues went instead, and were all killed, though Domon lived long enough to have one last talk with Senji.

As a mark of respect, Senji had DSMK (his colleagues' initials - Domon, Shindo, Momoi, Kan) tattooed above his right eye.
8. Rokuro Bundo, a member of Scar Chain, creates a data chip containing crucial information about Deadman Wonderland, which is to be released to the outside world. Ganta is angry with Shiro when she throws the data chip into a fire and destroys it. However, it turns out that she was right to do so. Why?

Answer: The data chip was actually a bomb.

Rokuro is actually a spy working for the Undertakers. While Hibana is fighting Nagi, he reveals to Nagi that the data chip is a bomb. Nagi sends a message to HQ warning them about the chip. Toto Sakigami - another Deadman who is actually the reincarnated founder of Deadman Wonderland, Hagire Rinichiro - tells Shiro, and she destroys the chip by throwing it into a fire. Ganta is furious and hits her, telling her he never wants to see her again.

However, Shiro is vindicated when Rokuro furiously asks the Scar Chain members how they knew about the data chip being a bomb.
9. What type of weapon does Azuma Genkaku wield?

Answer: An electric guitar that can turn into a pair of machine guns

Genkaku, a former Buddhist monk who was bullied and sexually abused by his fellow monks, got his revenge by massacring the entire monastery. At the prison, he has a Buddhist shrine filled with the heads of dead Scar Chain members. He is somewhat obsessed with Nagi, trying to get him to join the Undertakers. He developed a respect for Nagi after Nagi killed 22 Undertakers. He captures Nagi and tortures him into insanity by triggering memories of Nagi's dead pregnant wife, who was killed by Tamaki as revenge for Nagi deliberately losing his fight against her. His weapon is a Flying V guitar containing the Nameless Worm, which can also be converted into a pair of machine guns; he carries it around on his back. In the anime, Ganta shoots him dead, although he is left in a coma in the manga.

The acid-spewing robot is the Necro Macro, a guard robot which attacks and kills escaping members of Scar Chain. Hibana is the wielder of the segmented sword, which she uses to gradually slice her victims to pieces.
10. Which character, who has an evil alter ego known as the Wretched Egg, is revealed to have been behind the massacre of Ganta's classmates?

Answer: Shiro

Shiro and Ganta were childhood friends. Episode 7 of the anime reveals that Shiro is the Wretched Egg, a personality she created as a coping mechanism when she was subjected to horrific experiments as a child. As the Wretched Egg, Shiro massacred Ganta's classmates so that he would be arrested and join her in Deadman Wonderland, and also hoped that he would kill her one day. She also gave him his Branch of Sin by shoving a red crystal into his chest. While Shiro is cheerful and bouncy and has a sweet tooth, the Wretched Egg is a sadist with a creepy smile, who hates sweet food. The Wretched Egg is kept under control by the Mother Goose System, which plays a lullaby about a woodpecker to Shiro. When she cannot hear the lullaby, she switches personalities.

The manga explores her backstory in more detail, revealing that she was repeatedly mutilated and tortured throughout her childhood as part of experiments on the human immune system, and that she snapped and caused the Great Tokyo Earthquake while trying to kill herself with her own powers. Sorae, Ganta's mother and one of the scientists who experimented on Shiro, adopted her as she did not want to use Ganta in the experiments. She and Ganta fight, and she ends up in a coma, but awakens at the end of the manga.
