Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quiz's title is a play on the title of a classic '90s series, "Are You Afraid of the Dark?". This show featured a group of teenagers who told each other horror stories. What did they call their group?

Answer: The Midnight Society

Considered a Nickelodeon classic, the original "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" actually originated in Canada on YTV in 1990 (and ran until 1996), and aired in the US on Nickelodeon from 1992 to 1996. Repeats were shown on YTV, Family Channel and various Nick stations (such as SNICK and TEENick) for many years after the original run. A short-lived revival series ran from 1999-2000.

On the show, The Midnight Society gathered in the woods around a campfire to tell each other "Twilight-Zone"-esque stories, involving ghosts, curses, aliens, vampires and more. While the story was being told, the audience saw it acted out on their TV screens. Joanna Garcia, who later played the oldest daughter on the sitcom "Reba", and Rachel Blanchard, known for starring in the TV adaptation of "Clueless", played two of the Midnight Society members in the show's original run.
2. Which show featured a young Larisa Oleynik as a teen girl who had the power to change into a liquid puddle?

Answer: The Secret World of Alex Mack

"The Secret World of Alex Mack", an original Nickelodeon series, aired from 1994 to 1998. At the start of the series, young Alex Mack was involved in an incident with a special chemical that gave her superpowers. In addition to changing into liquid form, she also had some telekinesis and could shoot electric bolts from her fingertips. Keeping these powers a secret from her parents and everyone else (except her sister and her best friend) was the main theme of the series.

Larisa Oleynik, who starred as Alex, is also known for a recurring role on "3rd Rock from the Sun", on which she played Tommy's girlfriend Alyssa, and a starring role in the 1999 movie "10 Things I Hate About You". "Alex Mack" also featured a young Jessica Alba in a recurring role, as Alex's rival at school.
3. A group of kids solved mysteries with the help of a supernatural being that they often communicated with using the pens they wore around their necks. What show does this describe?

Answer: Ghostwriter

"Ghostwriter" aired from 1992 to 1995. It featured a group of kids, mostly middle school aged with a couple of younger kids, who lived in Brooklyn, New York and solved mysteries together. They were aided by Ghostwriter, an unseen ghost who could only communicate with the kids through words and letters around them; Ghostwriter would rearrange the words and letters (for example, on a nearby sign or in kids' notebooks) to spell out messages.

When the series began, there were four main kids who were part of the Ghostwriter team: Jamal, Lenny, Alex and Gabby. Tina joined them for their second case, and a few others came and went through the rest of the series as well. One of the show's creators has said that Ghostwriter was meant to be an ancestor of Jamal's, a former slave who placed great importance on reading and writing. Fun fact: Samuel L. Jackson appeared in a few first season episodes as Jamal's father. He really has been in everything.
4. Before she was Sabrina (the teenage witch), Melissa Joan Hart starred in a Nickelodeon show that explored the main character's challenges navigating through adolescence. What show was this?

Answer: Clarissa Explains It All

Melissa Joan Hart starred as Clarissa Darling in this series that originally aired from 1991 to 1994. It was a typical teen/family sitcom that chronicled Clarissa's teenage years and their accompanying problems, with a focus on more light-hearted problems. Other main characters included Clarissa's younger brother Ferguson, who was a major source of annoyance to Clarissa, and her best friend and neighbour, Sam. "Clarissa Explains It All" is considered to be the first Nick series with a female lead character and led the way for many later series featuring female main characters.

A pilot was developed for a new series after "Clarissa Explains It All" ended, called "Clarissa Now", which would have focused on Clarissa after her high school years. The pilot never aired when it was originally made in 1995 (though it did eventually) and the show was not picked up.
5. While this series was mostly live-action, it did have animated segments. These animations were meant to be cartoons drawn by main character Cody coming to life. On the show, Cody was a high school student who worked for the school's newspaper. The name of the paper was also the name of the series; what was it?

Answer: Student Bodies

"Student Bodies" was a typical high school sitcom that ran from 1997 to 1999. It followed the friendships and relationships of a group of high school kids, most of whom were involved with the school paper to some degree. Cody was a cartoonist for the newspaper. His cartoons often drew on or were continuations of real-life events happening around him at school; the animated segments were typically used to transition between scenes.

In terms of famous faces on the show, the character of Chris (Cody's more dimwitted friend) was played by Ross Hull. Before "Student Bodies", Hull played the founding member of the group on "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" but Canadian viewers would probably recognize him more for his post-"Student Bodies" career - weatherman. Ross Hull was a weather presenter on The Weather Network from 2005-2008 and has since been a weather anchor on CTV and CBC stations.
6. While the storylines and the problems the main kids faced were fairly normal for a teen sitcom, which of these shows was quite unusual in that the teens attended high school on board a cruise ship?

Answer: Breaker High

"Breaker High" was a Canadian series that also ran in the US; it lasted one season in 1997-98. On the show, a lucky group of kids got to complete their high school education while sailing around the world on a cruise ship. Other than the setting, it was pretty much like any other high school-set show; the kids dealt with problems with their friends and romantic relationships. The plots did not delve much into more 'serious' teen topics though, making the show suitable for younger viewers as well.

Though "Breaker High" didn't last very long, it did bring the now quite famous Ryan Gosling to the attention of young famous viewers. It was Gosling's first starring role in a series; he played one of the main teens at the ship school, Sean.
7. Unlike many of the other shows included in this quiz, this teen comedy did sometimes touch on more serious, adult issues. Even so, I still watched this as a very young kid. Which high school-based show saw main character Zack Morris often getting his friends into various schemes which usually didn't work out?

Answer: Saved by the Bell

"Saved by the Bell" originally aired from 1989 to 1993. It was preceded by a short-lived series called "Good Morning, Miss Bliss", on which several of the "Saved by the Bell" characters, including Zack, originated. The teacher, Miss Bliss, was supposed to be the main character, but when the series proved unpopular, it was redesigned as "Saved by the Bell" with a focus on the kids, who were junior high students in the "Miss Bliss" episodes.

While the majority of the storylines were less serious, "Saved by the Bell" did get into topics like drug abuse, drinking and driving and domestic violence. More often though, the show focused on Zack's 'brilliant' ideas and the on-going love triangles and romantic relationships among the teens. A few of the show's stars continued to be well-known after "Saved by the Bell"; Tiffani Thiessen starred on "Beverly Hills, 90210" for several years, and Mario Lopez has been involved with "Dancing with the Stars" and "The X Factor".
8. Which of these was a Canadian kids' game show that was hosted by Wink Yahoo and often got a little messy?

Answer: Uh Oh!

"Uh Oh!" originally aired on YTV from 1997 to 2003. It was a spin-off of another YTV kids' show, "It's Alive", a variety show which included a parody of a game show. That parody turned into a real game show and eventually became "Uh Oh!" after "It's Alive" ended. Game play involved spinning a wheel and having to complete activities, which usually included lots of slime and other messy aspects. The contestants also had to answer trivia questions, and had goo poured on their partners if they were wrong.

The show also featured a round called "The Slime Tour"; segments were filmed at various locations in Canada and had viewers completing obstacles and tasks like the contestants on the show. This segment was hosted by 'Slime Masters'; Canadian comedians Shaun Majumder and Ryan Belleville were both Slime Masters on "Uh Oh!"
9. This show kicked off a franchise of toys, movies, video games and more television shows. On this show, a group of teenagers had superhero alter egos and fought against a bunch of monsters led by an alien named Rita Repulsa. I spent a few years of my childhood wanting to be 'the Pink one'. What show was this?

Answer: Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers

"Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" first ran from 1993 to 1995, and other series under various "Power Rangers" titles continued on after it. When the show began, five teenagers were selected by a wise mentor named Zordon, a floating head, who gave them powers and robots to help defeat Rita Repulsa and her crew.

Jason (Red Ranger), Billy (Blue Ranger), Zack (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger) and Kimberly (Pink Ranger) were the original five Power Rangers. Tommy joined them in the first season as the Green Ranger (and later became the White Ranger). By the end of the original series, Billy was the only remaining original ranger, with Tommy remaining as well. The others had all left the show and been replaced with other teens.
10. A staple of ABC's TGIF line-up, when this show began, the lead character was an 11 year old boy navigating pre-teen problems with the help of his family, friends and teachers. As the years went on, viewers saw the lead character progress through high school, college and even get married. What show was this?

Answer: Boy Meets World

"Boy Meets World" starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, the titular boy. Other core characters included Cory's best friend for life Shawn Hunter, his girlfriend and later wife Topanga Lawrence, his older brother Eric, and the ever-present teacher/principal/professor Mr. Feeny (who also was the Matthews' next door neighbour).

The series originally ran from 1993 to 2000. The later years sometimes focused on more serious issues, as the kids became adults, but it was overall a light-hearted comedy. In 2012, the Disney Channel commissioned a pilot for a spin-off series to be called "Girl Meets World" which would focus on Riley, the daughter of Cory and Topanga. In 2013, it was announced that the show was picked up to premiere in 2014.
