Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Street Legal

Answer: Toronto, Ontario

"Street Legal" appeared on CBC television from 1987-1994 and proved to be one of Canada's most popular home-grown series. It revolved around four lawyers (played by Cynthia Dale, Eric Peterson, Sonja Smits, and C. David Johnson) working in a law firm in the trendy Queen West village of Toronto.

It dealt with many contemporary issues, often particularly Canadian, and in the relationships among the various characters. Many Canadian actors of the day showed in guest spots during the run of the series.
2. Heartland

Answer: Hudson, Alberta

"Heartland" made its debut in 2007 and in 2015 surpassed "Street Legal" as the longest-running Canadian drama series. Set in the fictional town of Hudson, Alberta, it revolves around the life and adventures of the Bartlett-Fleming family who run a horse ranch in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Much of the attention focusses on the stormy relationship between the two lead characters, Amy Fleming (Amber Marshall) and Ty Borden (Graham Wardle).
3. Motive

Answer: Vancouver, British Columbia

"Motive" ran for four seasons on CTV (Canadian Television Network) from 2013-2016. It was set in Vancouver and focussed on the Homicide Department, with the lead characters Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman) and Oscar Vega (Louis Ferrera). Its intriguing premise was that in the first five minutes of almost every episode the identity of the victim and the murderer was revealed, the point of the show being for the police and the audience to discover the motive for the murder and hence the identity of the perpetrator.
4. North of 60

Answer: Lynx River, Northwest Territories

"North of 60" ran on CBC television for six seasons from 1992 to 1998, and was followed by five made-for-TV movies to continue the story. Set in the Northwest Territories in the fictional town of Lynx River, the show's cast consisted mainly of Dene characters, with the leads being Michelle Kenidi, the town constable (later corporal), her brother Peter (initially the band chief), and Albert Golo (villain and local bootlegger), and Teevee Tenia (a troubled youth who becomes an entrepreneur and eventually band chief).
5. 19-2

Answer: Montreal, Quebec

This nicely paced and well received police procedural ran on Bravo (2014) and then CTV (2014-2017). It dealt with the personal lives and the professional careers of police officers at Station 19 in the city of Montreal, the series name coming from the designation of the patrol car of the lead characters. These were Nick Barron (Adrian Holmes) and Ben Chartier (Jared Keeso).
6. Anne of Green Gables

Answer: Avonlea, Prince Edward Island

Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books set in and around Avonlea on Prince Edward Island have become one of the mainstays of Canadian literature and have attracted fans and visitors from around the world to the house with green gables near Cavendish on the Island.

These have included the Duchess of Cambridge, who on a visit to Canada wanted PEI on her list of attractions. The story of red-haired Anne Shirley, who is adopted by the Cuthberts (brother and sister), was not televised as a regular series but a collection of mini-series and made-for-TV movies. Spin-off shows, "Road to Avonlea" and "Emily of New Moon", did appear as regular series.
7. Corner Gas

Answer: Dog River, Saskatchewan

"Corner Gas" was a sitcom that ran for six seasons (2004-2009) on CTV. The setting was a gas station in the middle of nowhere, actually in the tiny community of Dog River, Saskatchewan, full of odd and eccentric characters. In 2018 an animated reboot of the series was launched on The Comedy Channel. Notable lead actors included Eric Peterson (from "Street Legal") as an elderly senior whose favourite word is "jackass".
8. The Beachcombers

Answer: Gibsons, British Columbia

One of the longest-running and most loved shows on Canadian television, "The Beachcombers" ran on CBC from 1972 to 1990. The principal character was Nick Adonidas (Bruno Gerussi, whom the series made a star on Canadian television), who ran a salvage operation out of Gibsons, on the BC coast north of Vancouver.

His main rival was Relic (Robert Clothier), the villain you love to hate, and the third lead was Molly Carmody, played by Rae Brown. She ran "Molly's Reach", the cafe where the characters would gather. Two sequel movies, "The New Beachcombers", appeared in 2002 and 2004.
9. Little Mosque on the Prairie

Answer: Mercy, Saskatchewan

"Little Mosque on the Prairie" ran on CBC for six seasons (2007-2012) and was set in the fictional town of Mercy, Saskatchewan. The main character is Amaar Rashid (played by Zaid Sheikh), a successful lawyer who has become the imam for the Muslim community in Mercy.

Much of the drama turns on the interaction between the Muslims, who run their mosque from a rented room in the Anglican church, and traditional North American society.
10. The Forest Rangers

Answer: Indian River, Ontario

"The Forest Rangers" ran on CBC from 1963 to 1965 and was the first TV show in Canada to be filmed in colour. It featured a group of young people in Indian River, Ontario, who have styled themselves the Junior Forest Rangers and were environmentally conscious years before it became fashionable.

They have as their base an abandoned Hudson Bay Company fort -- the setting seems to be in northeast Ontario, near Algonquin Park. This show provided the first major role for Canadian star actor, Gordon Pinsent.
