Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character in the show is known as "The Doctor", but what is his real name?

Answer: We don't know

"Doctor Who" is the name of the series, but is rarely used to refer to the character in the course of the TV show. The Doctor uses the alias John Smith on more than one occasion. He is generally referred to as "The Doctor", but his real name is a secret.
2. What race or species is The Doctor, and which planet does he come from?

Answer: Time Lord from Gallifrey

The Time Lords are an ancient alien race who can travel through space and time. The planet Gallifrey is/was located in a binary star system within the constellation of Kasterborous at galactic coordinates ten-zero-eleven-zero-zero by zero-two from galactic zero centre...wherever that is!
3. How does The Doctor's body differ from a human body?

Answer: He has two hearts

As well as two hearts, the Doctor also has a respiratory bypass system that allows him to survive without air, and an unusually low body temperature of 15-16 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit).
4. The Doctor sometimes changes form in a process known as regeneration. When does this happen?

Answer: When his body is worn out or damaged, such that if he were human he would die

In reality, The Doctor regenerates when they want the character to be played by a different actor. He is not a mogwai or a lycanthrope.
5. The Doctor travels through space and time in a ship called the TARDIS. Why is it shaped like a 1960s London police box?

Answer: The mechanism broke and it got stuck like that

The TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space, in case you were wondering) is supposed to be able to change shape to blend in with its surroundings, but the so-called "chameleon circuit" got stuck after a visit to London in 1963, and it's been that shape ever since.
6. The Doctor's ship, the TARDIS, appears to be bigger on the inside. How can this phenomenon be explained?

Answer: Dimensional transcendentalism

Dimensional transcendentalism basically means the outside is in a different dimension from the inside. The fourth doctor explains it to his companion by holding up a large cube and a smaller one at different distances. From her perspective it looks as if the larger one would be small enough to fit inside the smaller one.
7. The Doctor has a useful tool called a sonic screwdriver, but what does it actually do?

Answer: It does whatever the scriptwriter needs it to do, but is mostly used for opening or sealing doors.

The Doctor mostly uses his sonic screwdriver to open or lock doors, but it has also been used as a medical scanner and TARDIS remote controller among other things. It's a well known fact that it doesn't work on wood. There has been a tendency, at times, for the screwdriver to become a "deus ex machina", a plot device which provides an abrupt resolution to a seemingly impossible situation.
8. The Doctor has been accompanied on his travels by many different "companions". Who are these companions?

Answer: All sorts of different types of people

The Doctor's companions have mainly been humans from various different time periods, but he has also had companions from other planets, including other Time Lords.
9. So, we know The Doctor has a TARDIS, a sonic screwdriver and various companions, but who or what is K-9?

Answer: A robotic dog companion

K-9 is a robot dog, or more precisely a series of four similar robot dogs who travelled with The Doctor. He has many useful features such as rotating scanner probe ears, a laser stun gun in his nose and an ability to perform complex calculations, the results of which emerge from his mouth printed on ticker tape.
10. The Doctor has fought many different aliens and monsters, but the most famous are probably the Daleks. What is a Dalek?

Answer: A genetically modified alien housed in a mechanical shell

Contrary to what many people believe, the Daleks are not purely robotic. The iconic "pepperpot" shell houses a living being. The creator of the Daleks was Davros from the planet Skaro. His race (the Kaleds) were almost wiped out in the Thousand Year War. Towards the end of the war he genetically modified them, removing their ability to feel emotion and housing their ugly soft mutant bodies in a defensive cyborg shell with integral weapons.

Their famous catchphrase is "Exterminate!".
