Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which decade did the 'Iron Chef' (original Japanese version) series premiere?

Answer: 1990s

'Iron Chef' premiered in October 1993 and ended in September 1999 with occasional specials being produced until 2002.
'Iron Chef' is run like a game show with a challenger pitted against an Iron Chef. Each chef has one hour to create dishes using the day's theme ingredient, which is revealed at the start of the show.
2. Prior to each episode the premise for 'Iron Chef' is recited. During these opening credits, which vegetable does Chairman Kaga (host of 'Iron Chef') bite into?

Answer: Capsicum

During the opening credits, Chairman Kaga takes a huge bite out of a big yellow capsicum/bell pepper. With the ensuing smirk on his face, it is hard to tell whether he is loving or hating the experience!
The premise for 'Iron Chef' is that Chairman Kaga constructed Kitchen Stadium in his castle which enabled him to realise his "dream in a form never seen before". His three Iron Chefs, leading Chairman Kaga's Gourmet Academy, would battle visiting chefs from around the world.
3. In the original 'Iron Chef' (Japanese), each challenger entering the Kitchen Stadium chooses an Iron Chef to compete against, with each Iron Chef specialising in a particular type of cuisine. Of the following, which is a cuisine that none of the Iron Chefs specialise in?

Answer: Thai

Original episodes of 'Iron Chef' allowed challengers to compete against an Iron Chef specialising in either Japanese, Chinese or French cuisine. In later shows, an Italian (specialty) Iron Chef was introduced.
Although no Iron Chef specialised in Thai cuisine, there have been challengers that DID, therefore making a difficult decision for judges having to rate and compare two different cuisines.
4. Over the years, 'Iron Chef' (original Japanese version) has had more than one Iron Chef specialising in a certain cuisine. But how many Iron Chefs have there been in total?

Answer: 7

A total of seven Iron Chefs have fought in the 'Iron Chef' Kitchen Stadium:
-Chen Kenichi (Chinese);
-Yutaka Ishinabe and Hiroyuki Sakai (French);
-Masahiko Kobe (Italian);
-Rokusaburo Michiba, Koumei Nakamura and Masaharu Morimoto (Japanese).
5. Each Iron Chef wore a different coloured costume to differentiate them both from each other and their challenger. Of the following, which is NOT a colour worn by any Iron Chef (original Japanese version)?

Answer: Pink

The purple costume was worn by Iron Chef Japanese - Koumei Nakamura, the green costume worn by Iron Chef French - Yutaka Ishinabe, and the yellow costume worn by Iron Chef Chinese - Chen Kenichi.
Other costume colours used by Iron Chefs were red, blue and silver/grey. Iron Chef Italian wore a silver/grey costume with red and green sleeves which is (possibly) to represent the Italian flag.
6. Which, of the following Iron Chefs (original Japanese version), did NOT specialise in Japanese cuisine?

Answer: Chen Kenichi

The yellow-clad Chen Kenichi specialised in Chinese cuisine. He was the only Iron Chef to 'go the distance' and be available for battles during the entire period 'Iron Chef' was produced. French and Japanese cuisines both had multiple Iron Chefs (two and three chefs respectively) with Italian the only other cuisine represented by one Iron Chef, although Iron Chef Italian was introduced some time after the premiere of the show.
7. If a challenger managed to beat an Iron Chef, what would they win (according to Chairman Kaga)?

Answer: The people's ovation and fame forever

Originally, challengers who managed to win twice against any Iron Chef were issued with the title of 'Honorary Iron Chef'. This, along with the original 'Iron Chef' format proved unpopular with audiences so winning challengers then had to be content with "the people's ovation and fame forever".
8. In the event of the initial Kitchen Stadium battle being declared a tie, how is a winner decided?

Answer: 30 minute overtime battle

'Iron Chef' prefers an outright winner so any ties are decided by going into an immediate 30 minute overtime battle with a new theme ingredient. Only once has the overtime battle resulted in a tie, prompting the Iron Chef and challenger to both be declared winners. All overtime battles are aired as a separate 'Iron Chef' episode. In initial episodes, winners were declared by a vote of the judges which resulted in several ties when the judging panel was expanded to four judges. Later episodes required the judges to score dishes on taste, presentation and originality thereby reducing the occurrence of ties.
9. Which of the following competed as an 'Iron Chef' regular in both the Japanese and American versions of 'Iron Chef'?

Answer: Masaharu Morimoto

Masaharu Morimoto competed in 24 battles on 'Iron Chef' (original) before joining 'Iron Chef America' to compete in 26 Kitchen Stadium battles. Morimoto replaced Wolfgang Puck on 'Iron Chef America' when Puck became unavailable.
Hiroyuki Sakai - 'Iron Chef' (original) - also competed in 'Iron Chef America' although not as a regular cast member.
Bobby Flay competed against Masaharu Morimoto twice with a one win - one loss record and appeared as an Iron Chef on 'Iron Chef America'.
Chen Kenichi never made the crossover to 'Iron Chef America' and Mario Batali only ever appeared on 'Iron Chef America'.
10. At which point of each 'Iron Chef' episode does Fuki-san ask "Whose cuisine reigns supreme?"

Answer: Just prior to announcing the winner

After the judges line up on stage and quick overlaid re-cap of the battle Fuki-san asks, "Who takes it? Whose cuisine reigns supreme?" With a customary tension-building pause, the winner of that particular battle is then announced with the winner receiving the 'people's ovation and fame forever'.
