Ryan Newman, played by Elijah Wood, starts the season writing a suicide note and taking an entire bottle of stress relief pills. He is shocked when he awakes feeling physically fine. Enter Wilfred, the next door neighbour's dog, who Ryan is asked to watch. Wilfred appears to Ryan (only) as a fully-grown man in a dog outfit who speaks in an Australian accent.

Ryan leaves Wilfred at a daycare centre for dogs, but quickly realizes that the creepy man who runs the place is not treating Wilfred well. We also find out in this episode that Wilfred loves peanut butter.

Wilfred and Ryan visit a home for the elderly, where he seemingly is drawn towards residents just before they die. The story turns a bit darker when Wilfred jokes about smothering them with pillows, a story which Ryan ends up unsure whether to believe or not.

Ryan goads Drew into being over-competitive with him, forcing him to display aggressive and immature behaviour that Jenna hates. She breaks up with him and refuses to take him back the next day, although in later episodes they get back together.

Kristen has let Ryan believe for years that he was the one who left the gate open, allowing Sneakers to escape and get hit by a car. Just when you think this show can't get any stranger, Wilfred somehow channels Sneakers from the afterlife to prove to Ryan that he wasn't at fault, and Kristen confesses.

Ryan begins this episode cleaning up his house, and trying to clean up his life in general, including quitting smoking. The arrival of Bruce thwarts his attempt at this as he begins to doubt his own sanity.

Jenna unknowingly eats some candy with marijuana in it from Ryan's house just before her first TV appearance as a news anchor. This leads to her exhibiting some very strange behaviour on live TV and getting fired for it. Ryan's guilt, along with his ongoing feelings for Jenna, mean that he decides to stay and try to help her get the job back, given he is a lawyer.

Ryan's luck looks to be improving when he gets Jenna's job back. But in a chain of strange events, Wilfred is hit by a car, and Jenna mistakenly thinks she is pregnant after Ryan switches her urine sample with his sister's. The episode gets very strange and leaves Ryan wondering what is real when he returns to his house and there is no longer a basement that he used to sit in with Wilfred.
