Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of store was Melissa at where the other shoppers starting ripping at their own eyes?

Answer: grocery

Polly clearly didn't want to be there, but Melissa got truly alarmed when the doll's eyes popped open and she spoke. Then Melissa saw the image reflected in the frozen foods case of Dave the butcher with a knife through his eye. Melissa rushed out of the store, but not in time. All the other shoppers were clawing at their eyes, bloodying themselves. Dave went to call the police, but as soon as he had done so, he was forced to stab a knife through his own eye, killing himself.
2. What did Polly's doll say?

Answer: "Let's have fun."

At various points through the episode, the doll also said, "I want to play," "don't play with matches," "don't play with knives," and "let's play with the hammer." Whenever the doll spoke, though, it was an omen of bad things to come.
3. When Scully called Mulder for feedback on the case, what did Mulder say he was watching?

Answer: "World's Deadliest Swarms"

There were loud moans and groans coming from the television, to the point where Scully could hear it through the phone. When she asked Mulder what he was watching, he told her it was the "World's Deadliest Swarms" and quickly fumbled to stop his tape.

When Mulder walked up to the TV a bit later, there was indeed the image of a man fighting for his live amidst a deadly swarm. I guess Mulder had just gotten bored and popped in a tape!
4. What did the worker get caught in the milkshake dispenser?

Answer: hair

Polly was mad because the woman wouldn't give her more cherries without paying, so the doll came to life and caused the woman's long ponytail to get caught in the milkshake mixing machine. The machine pulled at her hair until blood started to appear at her hairline. Officer Briggs rushed to help her and Melissa and Polly ran out of the store.
5. What song was Polly playing on her record player that was also later playing at Jane Froelich's house?

Answer: Hokey Pokey

When Mrs. Froelich heard the music, she came downstairs and tried to turn the record off. As she was doing so, though, she came under the power of the doll. She picked up a broken record and cut her own throat open.
6. What was in Mulder's fridge?

Answer: juice

Mulder opened his fridge and saw that the only thing inside was a bottle of juice. He took a deep swig directly from the bottle, made a face, and checked the expiration date. When he realized that the juice had expired in October 97, he spit the juice directly back into the bottle.
7. What did Scully and Captain Bonsaint eat at the restaurant?

Answer: lobster

When they delivered the huge lobster to the table, Scully was shocked, saying "Oh, my god! That looks like something out of Jules Verne. We're supposed to eat that?" Bonsaint assured her that it was "a little late for anything else" and broke right into the tail.
8. Just before Officer Riggs arrived at Melissa's house, what did Polly say want to eat?

Answer: popcorn

Melissa got distracted when Riggs arrived, but Polly's doll quickly took care of that, making Riggs beat himself to death with his own nightstick. Later, Melissa stood in the kitchen over the officer's body making the popcorn on the stove.
9. How did Scully stop the doll?

Answer: put it in the microwave

As she and Captain Bonsaint watched, the doll burst into flame. As it did, Melissa was able to stop hammering herself in the skull. Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of the doll, as a fisherman pulled it out of the ocean at the end of the episode. Though the doll was badly charred, it was still able to open its eyes and utter those ominous words, "I want to play."
10. What fell on Mulder as he told Scully how much work he'd gotten done in her absence?

Answer: pencil

He was talking up his own weekend accomplishments, saying "Oh, God. It's amazing what I can accomplish without incessant meddling or questioning into everything I do. It's just ..." Unfortunately, he was interrupted when a pencil dropped down on him and Scully looked up to see the ceiling tiles full of them. Mulder was clearly embarrassed, but assured Scully that "there's got to be an explanation." Scully replied, "Oh, I don't know. I think some things are better left unexplained" and gave him a classic look of exasperated pity.
