Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As part of the VinylRight sales pitch, Gary told people that he wanted to put what in their hands?

Answer: crisp $100 bill

As Gary read from his computer monitor, the $100 was payment "for allowing us the privilege of introducing you to VinylRight siding, the thousand-year siding that never needs painting or maintenance." The man on the phone wasn't interested, and when Gary continued the pitch despite his protests, the man hung up.
2. Was Mulder excited about the assignment to the case?

Answer: no

Mulder was annoyed that every time a case involved something hokey like monsters, Skinner assigned it to him. In the hall walking away from Skinner's office, Mulder complained that he "must've done something to piss him off." When Scully asked what he was talking about, Mulder huffed, "Get stuck with this jerk-off assignment or have I finally reached that magic point in my career where every time somebody sees Bigfoot or the Virgin Mary on a tortilla I get called to offer my special insight on the matter?" Scully reminded him that it wasn't just his time that was being sucked into these cases, but hers as well. Mulder then told her that she should stay in Washington and he'd go take care of the case by himself.
3. What phrase from the taped manifesto did Mulder ask Scully to look into?

Answer: "hiding in the light"

Scully didn't seem thrilled by the prospect of sifting through old X-Files, but grudgingly did her duty, eventually getting back to Mulder with the information that it was spoken by a deranged deacon in Florida before he massacred his parishioners.
4. What phrase did Gary Lambert's supervisor reiterate when he thought Gary wasn't doing his job?

Answer: "Dial and smile."

The supervisor, irritating in his watchfulness, told Gary that if he wasn't smiling on the phone, the potential clients could hear it.
5. In what order was Greg Pincus calling the employees into his office?

Answer: alphabetical by last name

The first employee Pincus called was Nancy Aaronson. Gary, who seemed to like Nancy, warned her not to go, but she brushed him off as being "really, really weird." When she returned to her cubicle, she was a zombie but told Gary, "See, nothing to it."
6. Who tried to warn Mulder in the VinylRight office before he was taken hostage?

Answer: Nancy

Mulder was walking through the office, which appeared to be deserted, and Nancy whispered at him to get down. She was kneeling on the floor, hiding behind a doorway, and Mulder didn't process very quickly what he was being told. Before he could do anything, Gary cocked his rifle and Mulder was forced into the group of hostages.
7. Where did Gary hold the hostages?

Answer: cafeteria

When Scully arrived on the scene, one of the SWAT agents explained, "There's a small cafeteria in the building. We think our guy's got everyone barricaded there. He couldn't have picked a better spot: one door, no windows."
8. Who called Mulder's cell phone?

Answer: Agent Rice

Scully didn't want to call Mulder, knowing it would compromise him and that if it was safe to call, he would have done so already. After Gary fired at the SWAT agents on the roof, though, Rice decided it was time to call despite what risks it might pose for Mulder.
9. Who did Gary shoot when he was holding the hostages?

Answer: Mark Backus

When Mulder's cell phone rang and Gary went into his pocket to get it, he found Mulder's gun and hit Mulder across the face with it. As Gary was distracted with Mulder, Backus ran at Gary and Gary shot him. Then Gary found Mulder's badge and realized he had an FBI agent in the room with him.
10. Did the FBI send a film crew into the office building for Gary?

Answer: yes

Gary was insisting on being put on the news so that he could broadcast his warning and expose Pincus to a wider audience. The FBI did send in a crew, though it was on a closed circuit, so the only broadcast was sent back inside the building for Gary to see.
