Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What vice did Marty indulge in?

Answer: smoking

In her apartment, Marty lit her cigarette using the flame from the gas stove. When she was in police custody, she let Mulder strike a match for her to use as a light.
2. Where did the cops find Marty when they came to Paco Ordonez's hotel room?

Answer: shower

They entered the hotel room and found Ordonez's body on the floor of the bathroom. Then one of the cops pulled back the shower curtain, revealing Marty. She was holding a bloody sponge and the police assumed her guilt, even after realizing that she was blind.
3. Where had Ordonez been stabbed?

Answer: kidney

As Scully explained, the killer had "carved a single C-shaped cut through the right kidney. Fatal blood loss came in under 30 seconds." Detective Pennock didn't seem to mind the case's inconsistencies, even when Mulder questioned "how a blind girl could get the drop on an ex-con and bleed him out with surgical precision."
4. What did Scully find when she went to the crime scene with Detective Pennock?

Answer: glove

Mulder stayed at the police station to help give Marty a lie-detector test while Pennock took Scully out to Ordonez's hotel room. In the bathroom, Scully noticed a razor disposal slot in the wall and, seeing the loose plaster around it, pried the plate off. When she reached inside the hole, Scully found a bloody glove.
5. After she was released from police custody, how did Marty get to Spring Street?

Answer: on foot

As she was walking down the street, Marty had a flash of the redhead from the bar being accosted and threatened. Marty shouted to the pedestrians around her, asking which way to go to get to Spring Street. One man told her which way and Marty stepped right into the busy street.

She wasn't hit by any of the cars, but she was clearly having some difficulty, so the man stepped into the street and guided her through it, walking her to the alley off Spring Street. When they got there, Marty told the man to leave her alone.

She then felt her way to the dumpster, found the woman's bloody body, and returned to the police station to turn herself in.
6. Marty told the police where to find the suitcase of drugs.

Answer: true

As part of her confession, Marty directed the police to Charles Gotts' stash of drugs in the locker at the bus terminal. When the police found the drugs, they felt sure they had their killer, but Gotts was watching them do the bust, and followed them until he saw Marty and discovered where she lived.
7. What did Pennock call Mulder that Mulder said he'd never been called before?

Answer: skeptical

When the police found the drugs just as Marty had described them, Pennock was sure Marty was guilty, but Mulder was not convinced. Pennock told him, "You know, the thing I find most surprising about this case is you. You are one skeptical guy, Agent Mulder." Mulder was shocked and told him, "I've been called a lot of things. Skeptical, however, is not one."
8. What was Marty's relationship to Charles Gotts?

Answer: he was her father

When the blood tests on the glove came back, they discovered that Gotts was Marty's father. Before Marty was born, Gotts had killed Marty's mother with a C-shaped stab wound to the kidney. Mulder explained to Marty his theory on how she was connected to Gotts' crimes: "She was pregnant with you at the time.

She died on the operating table as doctors were trying to save her. You were born, just barely. But the interruption in blood flow you suffered most likely caused your blindness. [...] I think that during that time, as you lost one sense, you gained another. That somehow, a connection was formed between you and your mother's killer. [...] You see through his eyes. You always have. You don't want to, you just do. And because of that you feel responsible for his actions, but you're not. And you're sitting here in prison for crimes you didn't commit.

It isn't going to accomplish anything, Marty."
9. Where did Marty tell Scully and Mulder to go to find Gotts?

Answer: bar

Marty directed the agents to The Blarney Stone bar, but even before they went in, Mulder realized Gotts wouldn't be inside. When Gotts had been paroled, it changed Marty's life as much as it did Gotts's, and Marty didn't want to go back to jail through his eyes. Sure enough, Marty knocked Pennock unconscious in her apartment as they were there for her to pack and waited for Gotts to arrive.

When he entered the apartment, Marty killed him and freed herself from their bond.
10. What did Marty say to Gotts before killing him?

Answer: "I hate the way you see me."

Marty was sentenced for that murder and sent to prison, but didn't seem too bothered by it. Sure, she was confined to her cell, but she no longer had to see the world through Gotts' eyes, and she could always picture the ocean in her mind's eye.
