Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First off, what is the subtitle to "Paper Mario" for the Gamecube?

Answer: The Thousand Year Door

"Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" is supposed to be the sequel to "Paper Mario" for the N64. Legend of the Seven Stars was the subtitle to "Super Mario RPG" for the SNES. "Paper Mario" had no subtitle. The Magical Map is an item in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" but it is not the subtitle.
2. Does Luigi appear in this game?

Answer: Yes

Luigi does appear in this game even before Mario appears. Luigi gives the letter sent by Princess Peach to Mario. Later in the game after Mario completes the first chapter, Luigi appears in Rogueport. Apparently, he goes on his own adventure similar to Mario's and shows up with partners who usually disagree with his stories. During the stories, Mario and his partner fall asleep since Luigi's story is so long.
3. What is the name of the world that leads to all the chapters?

Answer: Rogueport

Rogueport is actually in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the Mushroom Kingdom is not referred to as the main world. The Mushroom Kingdom, however, has been a common staple in Mario games. Isle Delfino was the overworld for the game "Super Mario Sunshine" for the Gamecube. Glitzville is a chapter world in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door." To get to the chapters you either depart by boat, blimp, train, or one of the many warp pipes in the ancient city beneath Rogueport.
4. What kind of creature is your first partner?

Answer: Goomba

All of these creatures eventually become a partner on your team but a goomba is the first one. Her name is Goombella and she is in her second year of archaeology studies. Goombella although small in size, is very useful. Her main attack Headbonk works just like Mario's jump attack which does two 1 damage attacks.

When she is upgraded the damage increases along with her HP. Unfortunately, this makes her unable to attack spiked enemies. Goombella also has another ability called Tattle. Tattle allows you to gather info about enemies including their HP, attack, and defense.

This will help you decide what attacks to use against what enemies.
5. Who is Frankly, and what occupation does he hold?

Answer: a Goomba who is an archaelogy professor

A pig who is a hot dog vendor is kind or ironic but he does appear in the game. So do all the other characters listed here. Frankly is Goombella's archaelogy teacher and he can provide lots of useful information. In your first journey into the ancient city underneath Rogueport he accompanies you. Frankly also teaches you the basics of battling.
6. How does Mario level up?

Answer: Star Points

Once Mario acquires one hundred star points from defeating enemies he goes up a level. He can choose whether to increase his HP (Heart Points) by five, his FP (Flower Points) by five, or his BP (Badge Points) by three. Experience Points were used in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars," and Flower Points are used to use more powerful moves. Star Power is used to execute special attacks.
7. How do Mario's partners level up?

Answer: none of these

The only points that partners use are FP and they share these with Mario. However, they also have HP. Partners can only level up by a rare item called a Shine Sprite (taken from "Super Mario Sunshine"). They may be in plain view or hidden but sometimes you have to think to acquire one. Once you have three Shine Sprites, take them to the wizard next to Frankly's house.

When upgrading a partner, their max HP increases, they get a new move, and their strength increases.
8. What resides in the black chests?

Answer: curses

Yes evil dreadful curses reside in the evil black chests. Actually the curses are helpful. The evil spirit in the box claims to lay a terrible curse on you which causes you to change shapes. You need these curses in order to get through the game. Black chests can only be opened with a black key which is usually found nearby.
9. What ability do you get for opening the first black chest?

Answer: paper airplane

The paper airplane is the first ability you obtain. Mario can fold himself into a paper airplane carrying his partner(s) on special airplane panels. You need the paper airplane on your first journey to the ancient city to find the Thousand Year Door and proceed to Chapter 1.
10. In the battle tutorial, what object was an audience member going to throw at Mario?

Answer: hammer

All of these things can be thrown at you but the Koopa Troopa is holding a hammer to throw at you. Frankly warns you about this and tells you to press X to send him fleeing. You need to watch what the audience member throws at you because it may be a coin or an item. So look before you press X.
11. Mario is trying to obtain the ________________________.

Answer: Crystal Stars

In all of the Mario RPG games the main objective has been to collect stars and "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" is no different. There are a total of seven Crystal Stars and they are needed to open the Thousand Year Door. Every time you bring a star to the door the location of the next Crystal Star will appear on The Magical Map.
12. Who is the boss you fight to get to the Warp Pipe to Petal Meadows?

Answer: Blooper

Yes Blooper, the annoying squid enemy who has constantly bothered Mario is back. You do fight Bowser but not until later in the game. Blooper appeared as a regular enemy in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" and as a huge boss called King Calimari.

In "The Thousand Year Door" Blooper has two tentacles that need to be defeated first. After defeating Blooper, three platforms appear taking you to the warp pipe. You can only fight Blooper after finding The Thousand Year Door.
13. What enemy must you best in trivia to get the Stone Keys?

Answer: Thwomp

In order to get to the location of the Stone Keys you need to answer five of Thwomp's questions correctly. If you answer three wrong he states you will get a cruel and unusual punishment.
14. In what shapes are the Stone Keys?

Answer: sun and moon

You would think that since they are called the Stone Keys they would be in the shape of stone enemies but that is not the case. When you take a key from either side of the hall where the keys are located you will be attacked by a group of Fuzzies. Fuzzies come in a variety of colors and the black ones guarding the keys are the easiest.

They only suck HP away from you. The gold ones are slightly tougher than the black ones. The green ones, which you will meet at Glitzville can multiply and the pink ones steal FP and unleash powerful spells on you.
15. What partner do you get after obtaining the Stone Keys?

Answer: Koops

As the name suggests, Koops is a Koopa Troopa. You had met him earlier on your quest but he was to embarrased and shy to ask if he could be a partner. Once you leave for the rocks you saw at the beginning of Petal Meadows Koops runs out and after a conversation he joins your party. Koops has his pros and cons just like Goombella. Koops can attack enemies that don't have spike by hitting enemies with his shell. Unfortunately he can also get knocked on his back for a while being unable to defend or move. Koops ability Hold on the field allows him to stay someplace spinning or to reach something that is not in Mario's range. You need to use the hold ability to expose the Warp Pipe to Hooktail's Castle. Koops decides to go with Mario because his father went to battle Hooktail a while back and he has not returned since.
16. Where is the first Crystal Star?

Answer: none of these

The first Crystal Star is actually inside Hooktail herself. Rogueport does not contain any Crystal Stars while Boggly Woods contains the second crystal star.
17. What item is helpful in defeating Hooktail?

Answer: Attack FX R

The attack FX R is a badge that is found after you get the ability of paper thinness. It is not needed to defeat Hooktail but is very useful. When entering the jail cell room, Koops sees a skeleton that he thinks is his father. The skeleton has a note that says, "Hooktail's weakness is something that begins with a cr and ends with a icket." ??? Pretty obvious what his weakness is. Anyways when equipping the badge it produces the sound of a cricket when Mario attacks. Crickets give Hooktail indigestion which is why it's a weakness.

When you do a good amount of damage to Hooktail, you'll get you three offers that are valuable but do not accept any of them just keep on pummelling away at them and you will win.
18. What color is the first Crystal Star?

Answer: silver

All of these are colors of a Crystal Star but silver is the first one which you get after defeating Hooktail. The star gives you the special move EARTH TREMOR which allows Mario to hit all enemies on the ground with his hammer. Along with the Crystal Star, Hooktail burps up Koop's father also which is still very much alive.
19. Who is the main villain of this game?

Answer: Grodus

All of these villains have been a nemesis to Mario and friends. Grodus is a villainous being with a glass head and is leader of the X-Nauts (the main villains of the game). Bowser does appear in this game but he is not the main villain. However, in most Mario games he does appear as the main villain heading the Turtle Tribe and the Koopa Klan. Smithy was a villainous robot in the first "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars"). Wart was the main villain in "Super Mario Bros. 2" for the NES.
20. What ability does the second black chest contain?

Answer: paper thinness

Again the oh so scary chest curse is back! Mario says that the chest will curse him but the chest denies it. Mario is so gullible. He gets cursed again and gets the helpful ability of paper thinness. This allows him to squeeze into small places by turning sideways. This also gets the attack FX R badge which is helpful in defeating Hooktail.
21. Under Rogueport, which of the following things can the wizard not predict?

Answer: Crystal Stars

The wizard can help tell you your next path to the Crystal Star but cannot actually predict it. Every time you ask for something from the wizard he charges more coins for the next prediction. The wizard is like an in-game players guide so you may not want to use him if you're trying to figure out everything on your own.
22. How many tarot cards appear when the wizard makes his prediction?

Answer: 9

He dissapears leaving behind nine large tarot cards. Once they are stacked the fold out and the wizard appears on card #5 and gives you your prediction.
23. What is the name of the computer that talks to Princess Peach?

Answer: TEC

In the aftermath of every chapter you get the opportunity to play as Princess Peach and Bowser. Peach does not know where she is held and she is held prisoner by Lord Grodus and the X-Nauts. TEC constantly talks to her and is a very nice computer capable of thinking and talking. Throughout the game you will learn about TEC and the plan of the X-Nauts as Princess Peach.
24. What emotion does this computer want to learn?

Answer: love

The poor computer doesn't know emotions. Peach ends up teaching TEC the emotion of love. Eventually, TEC also develops a bond of love with Peach. I still think she's going to go for Mario though instead of a computer.
25. Do you play as Bowser in the game?

Answer: Yes

Of course you do! And of course Bowser appears in the game or else it wouldn't be the same with some villain upstaging the Koopa King. Bowser has to go through the agony that he first put Mario through. He has to travel in a plain level, a water level, and a fortress level from Mario Bros.

It is pretty funny as a mockery of the game that started it all. Bowser has infinite lives so obviously you have to pass through it. Bowser is available to play in the aftermath of every chapter.
