Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "New Leaf" was the subtitle for a game in what popular Nintendo simulation series?

Answer: Animal Crossing

"Animal Crossing" first released on the Gamecube back in 2001 and quickly became a popular 'Player's Choice' title for the system. As such, sequels emerged on a number of devices in later years beginning with the DS, then continuing on the Wii and 3DS.

The 3DS version, released in 2012, was called "Animal Crossing: New Leaf", and it allowed players to, as is typical in the series, take the role of a person moving into a new village and living amongst its people, often animals, while performing different tasks and unlocking new things.

The game, allowing players to link up online, was extremely well-received.
2. In which popular RPG would you be likely to see the leaves of the World Tree in either Sylvarant or Tethe'alla?

Answer: Tales of Symphonia

"Tales of Symphonia", released on the Gamecube and Playstation 2, was a popular entry in the much-acclaimed "Tales..." series of non-turn-based RPGs by Namco Bandai. First released in 2003, the game was critically praised for its combat system and story, both staples in later sequels.

A proper sequel, "Dawn of the New World", was released on the Wii U in 2008. The World Tree, also known as the Giant Kharlan Tree, is a major focal point of the story because its destruction would end both worlds. Lloyd Irving and company set out to destroy Mithos Yggdrasill and Cruxis, who plan to destroy the Great Seed.
3. If Super Mario uses a leaf, what does he turn into?

Answer: Raccoon Mario

The leaf was introduced in the 1988 Famicom game "Super Mario Bros. 3", one of the classic platformers of the early "Mario" days, and it's well known in the series, mainly because it was the first item to transform Mario into a half-human-half-animal hybrid (specifically a raccoon).

He would also be able to obtain a Frog Suit in this game. The leaf has recurred in several games in the series, but Mario has been able to fly by other means; a cape appeared in "Super Mario World" and a winged cap appeared in "Super Mario 64", for a couple examples. To fly as the raccoon, Mario needed to run full-speed, jump, and flutter with his tail.
4. If you're picking up some Silverleaf, you're likely playing which of these popular video games?

Answer: World of Warcraft

Silverleaf is one of the first herbs you'll find, likely in starter zones, in "World of Warcraft" (PC). Even though most people will look to the "World of Warcraft" and see battle, embarking on professions is a good way to make your character more well-rounded. One of these, Herbalism, allows you to pick up herbs from around the world(s), using them for Alchemy or, possibly, selling them to people who will. Silverleaf, being an early-game herb, is only used for weaker potions.
5. What PlayStation 2/Wii game would be the most likely to feature the pink leaves of cherry blossoms throughout?

Answer: Okami

"Okami", originally released on the PS2 in 2006 but subsequently ported to the Wii to use motion controls, was a critically acclaimed release by the now-defunct Clover Studios (most of which became Platinum Games in 2007). Allowing you to play as Amaterasu, a Japanese wolf spirit, the game featured an interesting mechanic in which you could paint, on-screen, with a celestial brush to accomplish tasks in the story. "Okami" was set in a highly-stylized Feudal Japan and, as such, featured a great number of cherry blossoms/sakura.
6. What Pokemon, capable of learning Razor Leaf, was number 001 in the Kanto Pokedex and one of the original starters?

Answer: Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur was one of three Pokemon you could have begun "Pokemon Red" or "Pokemon Blue" with way back when, and he actually had the privilege of starting off the game's Pokedex in position 001 (followed by Ivysaur and Venusaur, his evolutions). The other starters were the fire-type Charmander and the water-type Squirtle. Using a Bulbasaur you would have access to grass-type attacks like Razor Leaf, Leech Seed, Vine Whip, and the powerful Solar Beam. Each subsequent game in the core series (save for a small handful of notable exceptions) featured a grass-type starter.
7. When sprouting a brand new Pikmin, a leaf at the top of its head would indicate that it is at the final, most powerful form of its evolution.

Answer: False

Found in the Nintendo-made "Pikmin" series, Pikmin themselves are resourceful, helpful creatures known for carrying heavy weights and assisting visitors to their planet with laborious tasks when whistled at. Pikmin come in different colours and sizes, each with their own properties, but all of them are denoted by either a leaf, bulb, or flower on their heads which indicate their evolution.

A leaf is a brand-new Pikmin and is the slowest of the three; having flower Pikmin would indicate greater speed. Leaving Pikmin in the ground longer would allow them to sprout petals over time, but you could also upgrade them with substances found on the surface of the planet.
8. Green and Red Herbs are primarily used in the "Resident Evil" series for which means?

Answer: Healing

Appearing as far back in the series as the very first game on the PlayStation, the herb healing system has been a staple of the "Resident Evil" games, allowing players to survive the zombie apocalypse with more ease. Combining and mixing herbs, obviously by grinding them down and ingesting them in some way, provides for stronger heals, and combining different colours allows for different effects. Red Herbs, for instance, enhance the healing power of a Green Herb while a Blue Herb stops poison effects. Later in the series, the Yellow Herb also appears and is able to cure the player to max health.

Herbs can be found almost anywhere, showing up in small pots.
9. Which of these items appears in the "Legend of Zelda" series in some form?

Answer: Deku Leaf

Due to the consistency of races in the "Legend of Zelda" series, it would be a wise guess, despite what games in the series you've played, to choose 'Deku' as an option since the Deku are predominantly forest-dwellers known for sprouting form the ground. First appearing in "Ocarina of Time" as scrubs and larger beasts, the Deku have shown two sides: hostile and friendly. Link even becomes a Deku in "Majora's Mask", albeit temporarily.

The Deku Leaf, appearing in "Wind Waker", is used by Link to blow large gusts of air at foes or switches.

It also allows him to float on drafts in the air. It, of course, comes from the Great Deku Tree.
10. What game in the "Pokemon" series features the word 'Leaf' in its title?

Answer: Pokemon LeafGreen

"Pokemon LeafGreen" was released along with "Pokemon FireRed" in 2004, eight years after the original release of the first "Pokemon" games on the Game Boy. Recreated with updated graphics and a few small alterations, the game was the first remake in the series, and it was done on the Game Boy Advance. Oddly, the original "Green" version was only officially released in Japan; North America and PAL regions ended up launching with "Red" and "Blue", and a 'WaterBlue' version of the game never materialized.
