Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Squaresoft famous for?

Answer: RPGs

Squaresoft is very famous for its RPG genre. It started out by bringing out a few games for the Famicom Disk System in Japan, then they were starting to get a little famous when some games reached the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and Game Boy. After becoming greatly famous for "Chrono Trigger" and few of the "Final Fantasy" games for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) in North America, Squaresoft moved up even more to the PlayStation, where it made the legendary "Final Fantasy VII," which is possibly the best RPG ever made to date.

After the great success of "Final Fantasy X" for the PlayStation 2, Squaresoft merged with another RPG company called Enix. Square Enix, the name of the merged company, was successful for creating "Kingdom Hearts" and "Final Fantasy X-2." Square Enix also made "Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles" for Nintendo's GameCube. Will Square Enix be successful in its upcoming games? We hope so.
2. Why did Squaresoft move to the PlayStation instead of the Nintendo 64?

Answer: Nintendo 64 had a limited storage capacity

The real reason for Squaresoft's decision to make "Final Fantasy VII" on the PlayStation instead of the Nintendo 64 was the storage capacity. The cartridge format used by the Nintendo 64 would supposedly put limits on the game that Squaresoft wanted to create as well as future "Final Fantasy" games.
3. What was the name of Squaresoft's first feature-length film?

Answer: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

"Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" is Squaresoft's first feature-length film. The only thing wrong about the movie was that it was a financial failure in North America. Still, it was generally well received among critics and those in the public who actually saw the movie.
4. The very first "Final Fantasy" game was released in what month and year in North America?

Answer: December, 1990

"Final Fantasy" was released on December of 1990. In the game, you play as the Light Warriors. You have been asked by the king to reclaim the princess, who has been captured by the evil knight Garland. This single quest leads you to other quests and eventually reveals a larger enemy. Your four-member party can be made up of any combination of fighters, thieves, black belts, red mages, white mages, and black mages, all with their own skills and powers.
5. Did Squaresoft have anything to do with the "Breath of Fire" series?

Answer: Yes

Yes! The first "Breath of Fire" game was developed by Capcom but translated into English and released in North America by Squaresoft. So while it's not a full-fledged Squaresoft game, "Breath of Fire" is nonetheless a great RPG in the tradition of the Final Fantasy series. Breath of Fire II through V had nothing to do with Squaresoft.
6. Akira Toriyama, the character designer for the popular anime "Dragon Ball Z," made the art for the famous "Chrono Trigger" for the Super Nintendo.

Answer: True

The answer is true. Squaresoft hired Akira Toriyama to create the characters of "Chrono Trigger" because they wanted a more mature look to the game. Akira Toriyama waa also hired to make the characters for "Tobal No.1", one of Squaresoft's few fighting games.
7. Which famous Squaresoft game was released on August 31st, 1999 in North America?

Answer: Final Fantasy VIII

"Final Fantasy VIII" was released on August 31st, 1999. This game had moved the series completely into the future, with realistic character models clearly based on real people. Squaresoft has always been known for creating emotionally involving stories, but "Final Fantasy VIII" puts emotions in center stage, as the plot focuses on relationships just as much as fantastical conflicts between heroes and villains.
8. Nobuo Uematsu works at Squaresoft and is very famous for what?

Answer: Creating fantastic music

Nobuo Uematsu is a legendary musician that has worked for Squaresoft, creating incredible music for over 15 years. He composed all of the songs in many Squaresoft games and leads the musical industry. On his spare time, he loves playing the violin, watching pro wrestling, and making beer at his home in Japan.
9. When did "Final Fantasy Anthology" come out in North America?

Answer: September, 1999

"Final Fantasy Anthology" came out in September of 1999. It offered most North Americans their first chance to play Final Fantasy V, an entry in the series that has previously gone untranslated and unreleased in North America.
10. Why did Squaresoft make a sequel to "Chrono Trigger?"

Answer: Expectations of a sequel were very high

"Chrono Trigger" was well expected to have its sequel, "Chrono Cross," in the future because it was one of the most celebrated RPGs of its era. The sequel takes the themes and concepts introduced in "Chrono Trigger" and integrates them into a new story that feels neither like a copy nor a complete departure.
