Question 1 of 10
1. This racetrack is a spooky and scary one. There are some shortcuts, such as ramps to skip over places and flickering narrow bridges. Boos appear halfway through and steal your coins when they touch you. Which of these courses fits the description and is in a Special Cup? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Another course I find quite unique is an icy and slippery one. This cold course starts in a circular shape, and then the racers must fly off a ramp. If the racers are fast enough, they can land on a chunk of ice floating on water; otherwise they must take the underwater route. Then, after a branching path, the racers fly off a ramp and turn to the exit. What Special Cup course is this? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. One of the most eccentric courses is from "Mario Kart DS", Peach Gardens. The second course of the Special Cup, it is owned by Princess Peach herself, and has many hedges, flowers, Chain Chomps, and Monty Moles. Is it possible to fall off the course?

Question 4 of 10
4. In most of the Special Cups, the last two courses are Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road. Now, the Rainbow Road tradition applies to all, but one Bowser's Castle is not located within the Special Cup of that game, but instead the Star Cup. Which one? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Well, I might as well talk about the Rainbow Road courses. They are generally regarded as extremely difficult as there are usually very few walls, letting racers fall off very easily (with the exception of one Rainbow Road). This one has music that is quite different from all the other ones. It has absolutely no walls, absolutely NO walls, and the ramps are risky in that way. The course itself is not that long, but there are tons of Thwomps. Which colorful course am I describing? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This course is probably my favorite of "Mario Kart 64". This Special Cup course Yoshi Valley is something that has not really ever happened in the "Mario Kart" series. What is the unique thing about it? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. This course is a very long one. So long that the game designers decided the change the number of laps into two laps instead of three! And there are no shortcuts for you to take, if you don't count the ramp at the circular part. The road has many twists and turns, and also many jumps as well. Which track is this? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Moonview Highway is a cool course with many Easter Eggs to be found. There are many cars, trucks, billboards, and rainbow Boost Pads. What game is Moonview Highway from? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. One of the many Bowser's Castles just happens to be one of my favorite courses ever. This one has some Thwomps at the start. Then as the course continues past a thin metal bridge, the racers go over a spinning wheel, although if you go to the very end of the wheel, passing by the road where the CPU characters normally drive, then you will find a shortcut. Then, after driving in a circle, the racers drive across a spinning cylinder bridge. If anybody falls off, they must navigate the long way around. After a Boost Pad shooting racers onto some moving platforms and a few more twists and turns, the course starts over again at the entrance to the castle. Which of many of Bowser's Castles is this one? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. So what are we to end this quiz with? Why, one last Rainbow Road course. This Rainbow Road is a great one of the series. It has spectacular music and a great design. The whole course is basically a tour of the planets and moons. At the beginning, racers will drive around some of the moons, as well as on a bouncy mushroom, and soon they are launched onto the ring of a planet. This course is unique as it is broken up into three sections instead of three laps, similar to two other courses of the same game. In the second section, the racers will circle a planet by driving on its ring. Then they continue and drive onto the surface of the moon, which is apparently infested with Chain Chomps. Finally, in the third and final section, the racers must drive through a spinning tunnel and fly through the air, avoiding asteroids. There are a few more turns before the finish line. Which grand course am I speaking of? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This racetrack is a spooky and scary one. There are some shortcuts, such as ramps to skip over places and flickering narrow bridges. Boos appear halfway through and steal your coins when they touch you. Which of these courses fits the description and is in a Special Cup?

Answer: (GBA) Broken Pier

Broken Pier is the second course of the Special Cup of "Mario Kart: Super Circuit" for the GameBoy Advance. It is a more difficult version of Boo Lake, the second course of the Flower Cup. The background and music is the same. The background is also similar to all three Ghost Valleys in "Super Mario Kart" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which all appear as extra courses in "Mario Kart: Super Circuit".

However, the Boos will fly high in the air, and will merely laugh if a racer goes underneath or touches one. Both have shortcuts that can be taken by going off ramps on the side, although some require mushrooms.

There are also some narrow and flickering (and both) bridges, usually for a shortcut. Neither course has made an appearance in any Retro Courses yet.

Answer: (3DS) Rosalina's Ice World

Rosalina's Ice World is the second course of the Special Cup of "Mario Kart 7". A shortcut can be pulled off by drifting and unleashing a Mini-Turbo Boost at the beginning of the circular area. If the racer speeds right at the right side of the beginning, he/she could potentially fly to the end of the circle without having to drive around on it.

In 150cc, the ramp can usually be used to get to the floating ice on the first lap, but not on the second or third unless the racer has a Mushroom and times its use right.

After passing some icicle stalagmites, the path branches, the left one being wider and easier to navigate, but the right one with some extra Boost Pads. Then the racer must jump from a Boost Pad ramp and turn left to finish a lap. Vanilla Lake 2 is the fourth course of the Special Cup in "Super Mario Kart", and returns in "Mario Kart Super Circuit" as an extra course in the Extra Special Cup. Frappe Snowland is in the Flower Cup of "Mario Kart 64", and makes an appearance in the Banana Cup of "Mario Kart DS".

Sherbet Land in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" is in the Star Cup. I specifically say in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" because there is another course named Sherbet Land in "Mario Kart N64" in the Star Cup, which has the same music as Frappe Snowland. The "Mario Kart N64" version reappears in the Banana Cup of "Mario Kart Wii".
3. One of the most eccentric courses is from "Mario Kart DS", Peach Gardens. The second course of the Special Cup, it is owned by Princess Peach herself, and has many hedges, flowers, Chain Chomps, and Monty Moles. Is it possible to fall off the course?

Answer: Yes

At the beginning of the course is a circle. The road goes from the left side of the circle, so if you drive right, you have to go three-fourths of the circumference to continue. About this circle is water, so if you fall off, you plunge right into the water.

Afterwards, the racers must drive around a giant patch of flowers (or through it with a Mushroom, Star, etc.) Then the racers must navigate through a series of hedges with Chain Chomps romping through. After passing a few small flower patches, the racers must drive through multiple Monty Moles to finish a lap.

There are several missions based on this one, mostly involving Peach, such as racing a stray Chain Chomp or Bowser. This course appears as a Retro Course in "Mario Kart Wii" in the Lightning Cup.
4. In most of the Special Cups, the last two courses are Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road. Now, the Rainbow Road tradition applies to all, but one Bowser's Castle is not located within the Special Cup of that game, but instead the Star Cup. Which one?

Answer: (N64) Bowser's Castle

Bowser's Castle in "Mario Kart 64" is only the last course of the Star Cup. It has many Thwomps and sharp turns. The Thwomps are all over the place, moving around in front of you and squishing you, or just guarding the entrance to the next part of the track.

A notable thing is a green mysterious Thwomp behind a cage which will laugh if you approach it, dubbed Marty. The course returns as a Retro Course in the Lightning Cup of "Mario Kart Wii". "Super Mario Kart" also has no Bowser Castle in the Special Cup.

It has one in each of the previous cups, however.

Answer: (SNES) Rainbow Road

Rainbow Road in "Super Mario Kart" is the one that started all these colorful tracks. The course itself is pretty short. The racers must make right at the start, and then turn right again after passing some Thwomps. Another right turn will bring the racers to a few ramps, and then two left turns leads to a long, straight road with some more Thwomps.

After turning right two times, the path splits, both paths containing two Thwomps, and then they rejoin and one last right turn will bring the racers to the finish line.

It reappears as a Retro Course in "Mario Kart 7", although the amount of Thwomps is drastically decreased. However, the vibrations caused by the Thwomps can be used to perform tricks. Rainbow Road in "Mario Kart 64" has walls everywhere.

The only hazards are Chain Chomps. The only possible way to fall off is to hop over the edge of the wall while driving sharply downhill.
6. This course is probably my favorite of "Mario Kart 64". This Special Cup course Yoshi Valley is something that has not really ever happened in the "Mario Kart" series. What is the unique thing about it?

Answer: It is a giant maze

Yoshi Valley is the second course of the Special Cup in "Mario Kart 64". There are many different possible ways to drive through the course. The faster ways usually have porcupines that will make racers spin out when touched. There are so many possibilities that the game does not show who is in what place until the end of the race, although the lead player is still flashing on the mini-map. If you are not careful, you may end up going in circles. Near the end is a large spinning egg that can crush you if it touches you.

It has the same music as "Moo Moo Farm", the second course in the Mushroom Cup, which is also a Retro Course in the Shell Cup in "Mario Kart DS". This course has yet to be a Retro Course after the first seven games. Also, no other course has any of the qualities of the incorrect choices except for Maka Wuhu in "Mario Kart 7", which has a separate start and finish line.
7. This course is a very long one. So long that the game designers decided the change the number of laps into two laps instead of three! And there are no shortcuts for you to take, if you don't count the ramp at the circular part. The road has many twists and turns, and also many jumps as well. Which track is this?

Answer: (GCN) Wario Colosseum

Wario Colosseum is the first course of the Special Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash". The background looks like the inside of The Colosseum. The course starts straight, then with a left curve that leads to a ramp with Boost Pads. When you go off it, it will send you through a spinning ring of fireballs with an Item Box in the middle.

After twisting right and left, another ramp will appear, same as the last one. Then, after turning a sharp left, a giant, steep ramp with several Boost Pads will appear, launching racers into a circular dome-shaped area leading onward by twisting around sharply left and downwards.

After a few more left turns, also this time with the risk of falling off, you will see a hill with Boost Pads on the way up, and then a long, sharp, right curve.

Then you drop down a really steep hill and continue to curve right until you reach a circular area letting you go either left or right. Both paths are symmetrical. There is also a ramp in the middle that will send you across the circle without going around the pit. All three ways will give you an Item Box.

Then, after one long right curve, you will go off a ramp that will send you into an Item Box and to the last stretch, where all you have to do is turn left and cross the goal! That is one long course, and will take an average of one minute and thirty seconds per lap! This is one of only two courses that does not have three laps, the other being Baby Park with seven laps (five as a Retro Course in the Banana Cup of "Mario Kart DS") Waluigi Stadium and Waluigi Pinball are only in the Flower Cups of their games, although both appear as a Retro Course in a Banana Cup-- Waluigi Stadium in "Mario Kart Wii" and Waluigi Pinball in "Mario Kart DS".
8. Moonview Highway is a cool course with many Easter Eggs to be found. There are many cars, trucks, billboards, and rainbow Boost Pads. What game is Moonview Highway from?

Answer: Mario Kart Wii

The course starts off with cliffs and trees surrounding the road. You can drive up the right cliff to reach a Boost Pad on a small ramp that will shoot you into several Item Boxes. The road will continue into the city area after four Mii-operated tollbooths, where the road will be widened from two lanes into four.

There are many cars, but they avoid the Boost Pads in this area on purpose. Then the racers drive through the tunnel, with more Boost Pads, and then reach four tollbooths operated by the Miis again. Just past them is the end.

There are many cars and trucks, including Bob-omb Cars which will blow up when a racer comes close. If a racer crashes into a vehicle from the side, they will simply flip over, but if a vehicle drives over them, they will be crushed as if a Thwomp or another racer with a Mega Mushroom had crushed them.

There are many interesting billboards advertising things. One interesting one is advertising a musical called "The Mushroom Moon", starring Peach, Mario, and Yoshi that is playing from March 21st to May 27th.

It shows a picture of Princess Peach, the moon with Mario's face in it, and Petey Piranha climbing a building in the background. Petey Piranha may represent King Kong in this scenario. However, if you are using your Mii, the faces of Peach and Mario will become the faces of two of your Miis. The license plates of some of the trucks are interesting, too. They might read, "Toad Factory Truck: '1-Up'", "Coconut Mall Truck: 'W1-1'", or "Moo Moo Dairy Truck: 'SMB3'". All other vehicles' license plates read, "POW", possibly referencing the POW Block.

Answer: (DS) Bowser's Castle

Bowser's Castle is the third course of the Special Cup of "Mario Kart DS". What is mostly stone in previous Bowser's Castles is now all metal. There are only four Thwomps throughout the entire course, and there are absolutely no Bowser Statues in this one.

When you enter the castle, Bowser's voice will laugh. The first two are moving back and forth in the first room of the castle. The third is past the spinning wheel room in the normal path. It actually slams down, rises, hovers out the window, and then comes back in and slams down again.

The last one is in the shortcut route past some Rocket Engines, and simply moves across the ground in an attempt to block racers. There are a few missions occurring in this course. One is to drive backwards across the spinning cylinder bridge as Bowser without falling off.

The other is to race Bowser through the castle as Mario. The twist is that there are many blockades preventing you from going places you may normally drive. You are forced to do things like take the shortcut and fall of the spinning cylinder bridge.

Answer: (3DS) Rainbow Road

Rainbow Road is the fourth and final course of the Special Cup of "Mario Kart 7". This is the only Rainbow Road to feature driving surfaces that are not rainbow-colored, which are the ring of the planet that looks like Saturn and the surface of the moon.

This course features the same melody that was in the Rainbow Roads of "Mario Kart 64" and "Mario Kart: Double Dash". Right after the end of the first section and during the last few turns, a portion of the track can be skipped over by either drifting and using a Mini-Turbo Boost or using a Mushroom.

The track even indicates when to do it with a red-and-white strip of the track!
