Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pressing START, then pressing SELECT on your SNES controller can allow you to back out of the level in what game?

Answer: Donkey Kong Country

Like with most platformer games on the SNES console, the START+SELECT option is a failsafe for anyone who's taken on a bit more than they want to or for anyone who's fallen into the wrong level. In "Donkey Kong Country", like many other games in the genre, this can only be done if the player has already completed a run-through of the level once before.

In other words, you should already be able to accomplish what you're trying to quit. On the plus side, you can also use this method to collect something midway through a level, back out, and avoid completing the rest while retaining the item.
2. Pressing START in this N64 game, you can check your Jiggy totals. What game is it?

Answer: Banjo-Kazooie

Jiggies are some of the main items to collect in the Rare N64 game "Banjo-Kazooie", and collecting them will allow you to complete puzzles, gain access to new worlds, and climb your way to the top of Gruntilda's Lair to save Tooty, Banjo's sister. There are 100 Jiggies to collect, and going into the START menu will allow you to make your way through detailed listings of each area to track them (and Notes and Jinjos, etc.).

The same sort of menu, albeit with more details, can be viewed in the popular game's sequel, "Banjo-Tooie".
3. Pressing START, then hitting L+R+A+START on your Wavebird controller will back you out of battle in what Gamecube game?

Answer: Super Smash Bros. Melee

For a game that can handle a fair amount of button-mashing, it certainly makes sense to hit several (calculated) buttons at once to ensure you know what you're doing. If your combat is set to go on indefinitely or you need to end early, you need to press START and hit the buttons listed in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen to back out.

In fact, since all of the options in-game are determined before you select the stage, there are no other options from the pause screen. Backing out will immediately bring the fighters to the results screen, albeit without standings since the match is unfinished.
4. Pressing START in "World of Warcraft" allows you to reach the inventory screen.

Answer: False

This really can't be done for a number of reasons. Firstly, the game is an MMORPG, implying that it requires a constant internet connection to be played. As such, saving the quiz would cause havoc on a live, constantly-running server. Secondly, pressing START on a PC game would be quite difficult without some sort of handheld controller; keyboards typically don't give a START button. To access your inventory, all you need to do is press the button bound to your bags/backpack; the default is B.

The bag is also accessible from the bottomo right of the onscreen display.
5. Pressing START in "Halo" (Xbox), you can NOT select which of these options during the campaign?

Answer: Delete previous checkpoint

"Halo" focuses the bulk of its gameplay on shooting, and when you're in campaign the focus is on simply accomplishing the objectives at hand; they're listed on the pause menu when you press START. Amongst your options you can Save and Revert to the Last Checkpoint which, in fairness, does not delete manually-- each checkpoint overwrites the one prior, almost always when an area is cleared out enough to justify the save. You can also use the menu to Restart Level, Save Settings, or Save and Quit the game, all typical fare.
6. Pressing START in what Game Boy Color game will allow you to check your money, save your game, or check your badges?

Answer: Pokemon Yellow

Sure, you need to go deeper into the START menu to find your money and badges (you'd need to go into your personal page in the menu) but all of these can be accessed by, effectively, pausing and pressing the button. Other options you have from the START menu include checking the Pokedex, organizing your own Pokemon, searching through your items list, and toggling the settings for the game.

In later "Pokemon" games, some of these options were relegated to your character's gear instead of the START menu.
7. Pressing START in "LittleBigPlanet" (PS3) allows you to modify your appearance and place stickers.

Answer: False

The costume creator and stickering options are actually available in-game, allowing you to operate your madness while your sack-buddies bound about behind you (or swat you, y'know?). The START menu is really only for pausing, toggling options, and backing out of the level/game. To get to the before-mentioned costume/sticker box, you need to hit the square button on the controller and simply go nuts.

This menu also serves an important function in each level as it's the only way to access Switch Trigger stickers.
8. Pressing START is not possible on what controller?

Answer: Wii Remote

While the Wii Classic Controller attachment has a START and a SELECT button in the typical center spot of the device, neither the Wii Remote nor the Nunchuk attachment features them. Instead, the START button's functions are typically bound to the + (plus) or - (minus) button or, in an overarching sense, the Home button which allows players to access the Wii Menu and quit the game (or change console settings or rebind controllers).

This was the first console in Nintendo's collection to omit the START button on its primary controller.

It returned for the Wii U.
9. Pressing START allows you to drop in or select the option to drop out in what music game?

Answer: Rock Band 3

And the easy thing is, the START (and SELECT) button is one of the only odd ones to press on the guitar/bass, drums, or keyboard controllers since the rest of the buttons are unorthodox (ie. frets or drums). If you press START and your instrument is connected to the game, it will connect automatically and you can choose your difficulty.

The song will pause to allow for this, and then rewind a short bit to prevent anyone from failing out mid-riff. The only instrument to use a regular game controller in "Rock Band 3" is the microphone; you use one controller no matter how many mics you have.
10. Pressing START in "Dead Space" (Xbox 360/PS3) will not pause the game.

Answer: False

This game, based entirely in the survival-horror genre, prides itself on making the player feel wholly unsafe, but there is a slight reprieve in pressing START as it allows you to toggle options or quit the game if need-be. However, going into your inventory screen at any time will not pause the game, so if you need to switch weapons, use specific items, or shop for helpful tools, you're at the mercy of whatever monster is creeping up behind you, waiting to strike and brutally destroy you. Relentless game, this one.
