Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The primary goal of "Frogger" was to safely maneuver a frog across a roadway and a river to a 'home' at the top of the screen. What did you use to control your frog?

Answer: A joystick

The joystick could only move up/down and left/right - it was not a ball-joint joystick. And while you could play a two-player game, it was only one player at a time.
2. How many frogs did you need to get into their homes in each level?

Answer: Five

You needed to plan your strategy in bringing your frogs to their homes, as you could not put two frogs into the same spot. Ideally, you wanted to leave one of the middle three homes for your last frog, to make it a bit easier.
3. There was a limited amount of time to get your frog through the obstacles (60 seconds). Once you reached 'home', however, the timer reset for your next frog.

Answer: True

Of course, that 60 seconds per frog, if you used your maximum time, gave you up to five minutes on the level. You got the same amount of time on your subsequent levels, but the difficulty increased.
4. The first obstacle that you needed to maneuver your frog across was a highway. How many lanes of traffic did you need to cross to safely reach the other side?

Answer: Five

Different versions of "Frogger" that came out in subsequent years on different platforms might come with more or fewer lanes of traffic, but the arcade version of the game had five lanes. The lanes alternated in direction of traffic, with the first, third and fifth lanes driving to the left, and the second and fourth lanes to the right.
5. After crossing the highway, there was a completely safe median to compose yourself before attempting to cross the river.

Answer: False

In the early stages of the game the median is safe, but as the difficulty increases, snakes begin appearing there as well, which must be avoided.

The median provided a moment's respite after the crazy highway before plunging into danger once again. But you couldn't wait too long - you only had 60 seconds to get all your frogs across, remember?
6. How many 'lanes' did you need to cross to get to your frog homes on the other side of the river?

Answer: Five

Yes, that's right - five again. Five lanes of cars, five lanes in the river, and five homes for your frogs. In the river, however, the first and fourth 'lanes' moved to the left, while the second, third and fifth moved to the right.
7. What kinds of animals that caused you problems in the river?

Answer: Turtles, alligators, snakes and otters

In the river, you could not run into a snake or an otter, or you would die instantly. You were able to ride on the backs of turtles, but you had to move off of them quickly before they submerged. You could also ride on the backs of alligators, but you had to avoid their jaws.

And, interspersed amongst the animals were logs floating down the river. They provided the safest 'harbour' in this part of the game, although the snakes could appear on the logs (and on the median, for that matter).
8. In 1982, "Softline" magazine stated ""Frogger" has earned the ominous distinction of being 'the arcade game with the most ways to die.'" Which one of these was NOT one of those ways to die?

Answer: Jumping onto a log where a bug is sitting

If you found a bug on a log, it was actually good, earning you bonus points.

Altogether, there were NINE different ways you could die in "Frogger":

1. Being hit by or running into a road vehicle
2. Jumping into the river's water
3. Running into snakes, otters or into an alligator's jaws in the river
4. Jumping into a home invaded by an alligator
5. Staying on top of a diving turtle until it has completely submerged
6. Riding a log, alligator, or turtle off the side of the screen
7. Jumping into a home already occupied by a frog
8. Jumping into the side of a home or the bush
9. Running out of time

9. What symbol appeared in the place of your frog when you died?

Answer: A skull and crossbones

Unfortunately, I saw that skull and crossbones a lot more than I really wanted to. It was really annoying to get sooo close to one of your homes and then run out of time or just miss the spot or have your turtles disappear from beneath you.

When dying, your frog wouldn't simply become a skull and crossbones, it would actually have a process of change that looked a bit like a balloon popping.
10. The opening music for "Frogger" was a Japanese children's song called "Inu No Omawarisan". What does it translate as, which seems to have no relation to the game itself?

Answer: The Dog Policeman

"Inu No Omawarisan" is not the only music used in the game. The themes to the anime cartoons "Hana no Ko Lunlun" and "Araiguma Rascal" are also used during the game.
