Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An all-time favorite, this video game console was introduced in August 1989 in the United States, and was created in Japan by Nintendo. Some of its models included the Classic, the Pocket, and the Advance. Which gaming system, which uses cartridges for different games, is this?

Answer: Game Boy

The Game Boy was a handheld console which sold millions worldwide. The original Game Boy was a rather simple machine, it had two buttons (A and B), a "Start" and "Select" button, and a directional pad. Only 6 games were launched for this console, although one of them was not available in North America and Europe, only in Japan.

I used to play with my blue Game Boy Advance SP years ago, I remember playing "Backyard Hockey" for hours! That would definitely keep me away from daylight for a few days!
2. The PlayStation, released in September 1995 in North America, was a fifth generation console that started a big line of products which would be created later on. Which Japanese brand, primarily known for its electronics, created the PlayStation?

Answer: Sony

Sony Corporation was just getting started with their Computer Entertainment division in the 1990s, competing with other better established gaming companies like Nintendo and SEGA. The PlayStation could also be used to play CDs, not just video games.

I'm more of a Nintendo guy, so I never really liked playing with this console. I do remember playing with it a few times at a friend's, but never really liked the controller much.
3. Released in September 1996 in North America, this gaming console by Nintendo was named after the capacity of its central processing unit. A "Super Mario" game was one of the launch games of the console, and became the first game to show Mario with 3D graphics. Which number is associated to this console?

Answer: 64

The Nintendo 64, which had a 64-bit central processing unit, was the last Nintendo console to use ROM cartridges for games. Also known as N64, the gaming system was discontinued in 2003. Both "Super Mario 64" and "Pilotwings 64" were released along with the console.

I only remember playing Nintendo 64 once and kind of not liking it. I'm too modern I guess...
4. The Dreamcast was a console released in 1999 in North America, one of the first sixth generation consoles to be launched. It was made by Sega, but it affected the company greatly, financially speaking, so they decided to work on video games for other consoles after that. Which character, a blue hedgehog, is an icon of Sega and was also the best selling game of the Dreamcast?

Answer: Sonic

Although initially the Dreamcast was doing well in sales, the introduction of the PlayStation 2, which was able to read DVD movies, destroyed Sega's hopes for more sales. The financial losses caused by the console led Sega to work as a third party video game developer and stay out of the console business.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a beloved video game character. I remember playing "Sonic Heroes" all the time!
5. A sixth-generation console, this system manufactured by Nintendo achieved enormous success worldwide. Released in 2001, it was the first to use optical discs instead of cartridges. Which three-dimensional shape gave its name to this popular console?

Answer: Cube

The Nintendo GameCube sold more than 20 million units during its time in the market. One of the major changes from the Nintendo 64 is the controller, as it was introduced with two handles instead of three. "Luigi's Mansion" and "Super Monkey Ball" were used as launch games for this console.

This one I can talk about, as it was (and still is) my favorite gaming console. Even though it was quite heavy, it was great! My favorite games were "FIFA 05" and "FIFA 07", the gameplay was truly awesome! I was saddened when I learnt games for this console had been discontinued in 2007.
6. The Xbox video game console featured a revolutionary system called "Xbox Live", which enabled voice chat and online gaming.

Answer: True

Developed by Microsoft, the Xbox console was released in November 2001, and was a sixth-generation console. One of its features was the "Xbox Live" system, which allowed players to download content and connect with fellow players.

This was Microsoft's first take on video games, in order to compete with Sony's PlayStation. I only played with this console once, the controller is fairly similar to the GameCube controller, but I do prefer the latter.
7. On November 2004, Nintendo came up with their next invention and released the Nintendo DS, a handheld console with a built-in microphone. What does DS stand for?

Answer: Dual Screen

The Nintendo DS has two LCD screens, one of them (the one in the bottom) with tactile function. The touchscreen allows the player to slide the included pen through it while also watching action in the upper LCD screen. The DS was enormously successful as to sales; it became one of the best selling consoles of all time.

My brother used to play with his DS and he'd lend it to me sometimes. I don't remember myself having fun, I do however remember becoming addicted to it in my pursuit of victory (and I don't even remember which game I was playing)!
8. The PlayStation Portable was released in March 2005, being a seventh generation console. What was unique about this console?

Answer: It was the only handheld console to use optical discs

The Sony PSP had a USB port, a headphone jack, and a memory stick included, in addition to eight buttons similar to those in the PlayStation controllers. It used the Universal Media Disc format as a primary storage medium, being the only portable console to do this.

More than 800 games were made for the console; I haven't played any of them yet...
9. The Nintendo Wii was a great display of technological advances being made by humanity, as its wireless controller controlled motion in the game. Which game did you get for free when purchasing the console (and is also the best-selling Wii game)?

Answer: Wii Sports

The Wii was great because it was also compatible with GameCube games, so it was like having two consoles in one! The "Wii Sports" game included five sports: baseball, tennis, boxing, bowling and golf. To play, you must perform the real-life movement with the Wii Remote (for example, in boxing, you throw punches with the remote).

The "Wii Sports" game was one of my favorites. I also enjoyed "Mario Kart Wii", another best-selling game.
10. Both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One included an amazing feature, which was a motion sensing device, capable of detecting movement and applying it into games. What is the name of this feature?

Answer: Kinect

Kinect is a webcam-based motion sensing device, made by Microsoft for its Xbox consoles. Kinect recognizes both movement and voice, as well as facial traits. It was first introduced in 2010.

Playing with the Kinect is a whole new experience. I just played the "Kinect Sports" game and it's incredible (although I did slightly injure my arm while playing bowling)! Be careful when using Kinect!
