You find the rest of Ashley's body parts in the other rooms, but it is the discovery of her head in a suitcase in her room that tells you they are hers and lets Bates gain control.

Answer: Hide in the closet

You cannot use either the chair nor the case in this room. There is a usable weapon in the drawer, but you cannot unlock it while being chased by Stephanie.

If Michael is not murdered by Stephanie during the first level, he will have climbed into a suit of samurai armor to hide. If you are unable to stop Jessica from committing suicide, she will become a zombie and attack you. Only Doug never makes and attempt on your life.

If Jessica kills herself, she becomes infected with the Cerebral Toxin. Ashley is also infected by it, but you never fight her. Stephane was infected by a different kind of toxin (that makes you go crazy) from the statue. Michael went nuts from a toxic paste in the helmet of the armor he hides in to escape Stephanie.

You do have to use the Golden Statue and the Amulet during the last encounter with Stephanie, but it is the lighter you have to use last, to burn the statue. The knife is used by Bates, but is not an actual item you select or pick up into your inventory.
