Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gwenhyver has an ongoing affair with who?

Answer: Launcelot

Gwenhyver has been cheating on King Arthur with Launcelot, which is why the ice queen kidnapped him and trapped him in ice. I am sure King Arthur does not want to rescue him, but he has to or the grail will judge him unworthy and kill him when he touches it. Gwenhyver will continue cheating on King Arthur with Launcelot even after you win the game, leading to a bittersweet ending. I once thought leaving Launcelot in the ice would give you a better ending, but I already explained what happens when you do that.
2. Merlin only lets you take one item from his place. Which item is it?

Answer: Lodestone

You can and should study the map and read the scroll for points and hints, but if you try to take either one too many times, Merlin will turn you into a puppy. You'll have to apologize to him and he'll forgive you once and return you to your human form. However, if you try to take an item from him again after this, he turns you into a puppy permanently and the game ends.

You don't need to lodestone to win the game, but it comes in handy.
3. You will have to get permission from two gods to go on this journey, or else the castle gate will come crashing down on you and kill you. One of the god is Christ. Who is the other one?

Answer: Mithras

You have to pray and donate money to Mithras, and he'll tell you about the three men you have to rescue. He will go away at the end of the game once you recover the grail.
4. The mule later reappears in which fan-made game?

Answer: Quest For Infamy

The mule that pulls Swart's cart in "Quest For Infamy" looks exactly like the mule in "Conquests of Camelot" despite the graphical differences. I don't presume this to be a coincidence. The mule personally serves you more in "Conquests of Camelot" than in "Quest For Infamy."
5. What is the name of the first character you meet outside of Camelot? "Copper or tin! Copper or tin!"

Answer: Widdershins

The first place you go to search for the grail is Glastonbury Tor. When you get there, the first character you meet is Widdershins, who will steal your entire purse unless you give him copper or tin. Cernnunos is a character you can ask Merlin about on this screen for points, but you never meet him. Hezekiah and Achmed come in later in the game.
6. The Black Knight sends what kind of animal to taunt you?

Answer: Crow

The crow warns you to turn back and tells you that the Black Knight cannot be defeated. He calls you a "fool" if you accept his challenge to defeat the Black Knight.

You have to kill three boars before you meet the crow, but the boars weren't sent by the Black Knight. They're just in the forest.
7. What is the best item to give to the witch?

Answer: Sleeve

On the screen with the crow, you will find the skeleton of a knight. On that skeleton is a magic sleeve you're supposed to take. When you give it to the witch, she transforms into a human. She tells you that she is lady Elayne and that the Black Knight turned her into a witch, and that only the sleeve of her husband could return her to her true form. She also concludes that since you gave her the sleeve, her husband must be nearby, so she runs to see him. Sadly, while she is correct, she must have been sad to find that her husband is dead. We never see her reaction tot his news since we don't see her once she leaves the screen after her transformation.

You can give her the lodestone, but she'll remain cursed, you won't get the points, and you'll have problems later in the game.

She demands the purse if you get too close, but if you give her the purse, the game is unwinnable.
8. Who are the servants of the mad monk?

Answer: The Old Ones

When you kill the monk, three spirits will appear to you. They call themselves the Old Ones and say that you are trapped forever in the Tor unless you can find a way to appease them. You better have some silver at this point.
9. The scarlet poppy represents what?

Answer: Fantastic extravagance

This game has lots of copy protection. Although you can start the game without the manual, you cannot finish it without it. The names of tall the flowers and what they represent are in the manual, and if you don't know them you can't rescues Launcelot.
10. Arthur must take the ship to where?

Answer: Gaza

The Holy Grail is in Jerusalem and the ice queen tells Arthur to take the ship to Gaza, where he can find a guide to take him to Jerusalem. If he goes to the wrong place, he is guaranteed to die.

I LOVE the music for when Arthur is traveling from Southampton to Gaza. All the music in the game is great, but I especially love that music. You get some different music if you travel to Dublin or Rennes, but you don't get to hear it for very long.
11. Who is the only person in this game whom you have the meaningful option of killing or not killing?

Answer: Jabir Hamid

When you arrive in Gaza, two people are waiting for you, claiming they want to help you. One of them is a boy named Hazm. The other is a man named Jabir Hamid. The person you are supposed to trust is the boy, who will take you to his master and feed and water your mule. If you hire Jabir Hamid, he will lead you to poisoned water. Your mule will be smart enough not to drink from it so you better watch him. I learned this the hard way. The first time I played, I hired the man, and when we got to the water I turned my eyes from the screen and failed to notice that my mule did not drink the water. So I was surprised when the water was poisoned. Anyway, you can draw your sward on Jabir at any time, and he will run away. On the next screen, he will appear and try to kill you. If you draw your sword and swing it fast enough, you will kill him. This does not give you any points, but Merlin is happy if you do this. You don't have to do it though, you can just ignore him. And this action will have no impact on whether or not the grail judges you worthy. After all, this guy deserves to be killed.

You HAVE to kill Saracen.

You have the option of killing the thief or letting him live. However, if you let him live, he will literally stab you in the back. Your armor will protect you, but the grail will kill him. So letting the thief live has no impact other than getting extra points.
12. Which of the following actions will NOT get you killed?

Answer: Buying the wrong apple

The Seeress will only sell you one apple, but she gives you three options: an ordinary apple, an apple that will restore you to perfect health, and an apple that makes everybody reveal to you what they want most. You must purchase the final apple. Purchasing the wrong apple will not get you killed. However, something even worse will happen. Purchasing the wrong apple makes the game unwinnable. You'll just walk around Jerusalem forever being unable to continue the game.

The butcher's daughter thing has a slim chance of happening. If you go to the butcher screen often enough, once in a blue moon you will see his daughter taking a bath through the window. You can stare at her like a pervert. However, if you do this for too long, the butcher will leave the stand at hit you with a cleaver through the window and you will die.
13. Who is the hierophant?

Answer: The beggar

The man at the corner of Jerusalem who looks at acts like a mere beggar is actually a hierophant who is capable of opening and closing the catacombs. If you pass Fatima's test, he will give you a vial that protects you from rat poison. You better not use it for yourself though.
14. What symbol stops the ghoul from eating you?

Answer: Pentacle

The symbol of the pentacle, which you can ask Merlin about at the beginning of the game, is all over the catacombs. You must find a medallion with the pentacle on it that you can take with you. You better not just take it with your hands though. You'll have to find another way to take it.
15. Which goddess tests you from the moment you arrive in Gaza to the moment you defeat Saracen?

Answer: Aphrodite

Aphrodite tests you six times because six is her sacred number. If you pass all these tests, she gives you the grail. However, the game is not over just yet, you better not ignore her, you better not have ignored anyone whom Mithras told you to rescue, and you better chase the thief.
