Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Link enters the Shadow Temple, he must find the Lens of Truth so he can see invisible things. What is the title of the place where Link finds the Lens?

Answer: Bottom of the Well

Bottom of the Well really creeps me out. Young Link deals with Gibdos, redeads, Deadhand, a floormaster, a beamos, a like-like, and a creepy pool of the dead with only his weaker weapons and Din's Fire (recommended for floormaster parts). Walking down a dark hall is fine until your sister reminds you of the Bottom of the Well! "Aaah! What is it? I can't see it!"
2. In Kakariko, the sign by the well states that it is a well of three features. What is NOT one listed on the sign?

Answer: Creepy

"Well of three features: Deep, dark, and scary." Don't you just love getting scared stiff, frozen to the floor, and leached by a zombie? After using the Master Sword or Biggoron's Sword, it's hard to settle for the Kokiri Sword against these monsters. Just to warn you-don't use Din's Fire in the room with all the torches and coffins. I did this once, and discovered that a few Keese, several burning torches, two Gibdos, and the Kokiri sword do not add up to a fun time.
3. When Link causes all of the frogs in Zora's River to grow large, they will play a mini-game with him. What song do the frogs play the first time Link follows their lead? (Note: This requires experience in "Majora's Mask")

Answer: "The Song of Healing"

The "Song of Healing" is as essential to "Majora's Mask" as "Zelda's Lullaby" is to "Ocarina of Time." I included a note in the quiz introduction to give you a warning, but I'm sorry if you missed out. The frogs actually play the extended "Song of Healing" that autoplays after you enter the simple six note melody.

It sounds a little like the "Song of Time," but I checked it agaist both tunes. After this first time through the mini-game, I have no clue what the frogs might play (it was hard enough the first time).

After Link returns from the future, he has a song for every frog in the stream, and can make them all big frogs to get this game and a heart piece.
4. Link returns to the Kakariko in the future and finds Sheik backing away from the well. As Link approaches, as mysterious shadow winds around the village and heads straight for him and Sheik. What just happened?

Answer: Bongo Bongo has escaped his seal.

Something has obviously gone very wrong around here. Impa went down the well to check the seal, and Sheik was waiting for the older Sheikah to return. Bongo Bongo breaks the seal and rises from the well, revealed only by his strange fuzzy shadow. Link is determined to fight the invisible creature and keep it away from Sheik. I wonder why... :)
5. In the Shadow Temple, several skulls there will "talk" to Link about Hylian history. What impression do they give?

Answer: Greed and War

They testify to a history of greed and war; perhaps Hyrule is not the happiest little kingdom after all. Link is a Hylian war orphan because of a war between Ganondorf and Hyrule, and the Sheikah have a history of living and dying to protect the Royal Family.

The skulls are mounted in the walls, have glowing green eyes, and say the same two statements over and over. They will get pretty depressing if you don't stop listening.
6. In the Shadow Temple, the first room with the spinning "reaper" blades features a message on the wall above an invisible hole. What does the message say?

Answer: "Come here."

"If you want to see a ship to the other side, come here." Nothing like a little humor to drive away the shadows, right? This really ticked me off the first time I found it-I followed Navi's interest into the alcove and dropped about two floors through the dungeon.

When you fall through the invisible hole, you can only see the ship through the bars before climbing back up. That ship takes you to the last portion of the dungeon, but doesn't bring you back. "Lurkers in the dark" refers to redeads, and is written in the grave where you find the "Song of the Sun."
7. Link boards a ghost ship, battles Stalfos, and jumps ship before the boat drops into oblivion. After finding a few items, he must cross a wide chasm to get to the boss. What must Link do to bring down the statue and cross to the boss's lair in the Shadow Temple?

Answer: Use the Fairy's Bow

The only way to cross is to shoot the bombflowers to set them off, so you probably had this one handled if you've played it. It's a neat trick that can be used a few other places. The explosions break the statue off, and send it crashing down over the abyss. Apparently, someone else (Impa?) has used this method of crossing, because a matching statue head is buried in the ground as a clue on the other side of the landing.

After crossing, Link can battle Bongo Bongo. Keep the hover boots on; they'll give Link an extra second of "solid ground" to take aim.

The battle is much harder without the hover boots because Link bounces too much to get off a good shot.
8. Link must eventually cross the canyon in Gerudo Valley to reach the Spirit Temple (and get Biggoron's Sword). Does Link have to wait until he gets the longshot to reach the carpenter's camp and Gerudo Fortress?

Answer: The horse can jump it!

Epona will make a spectacular leap to the other side, just aim her straight at that bridge entry. If you are not directly in line with the bridge, she shows her usual shyness for bad angles. The camera angle changes view and there is a brief clip of Epona flying through the air.

She will do it both ways across the canyon until the bridge is rebuilt. Walking her across that narrow plank bridge to get her there is a touch hard, but definitely possible. She really does have an impressive leap, even if she refuses to jump water and some fences. I have friends who didn't know this, so I included it to help a few others.
9. Once Link has released the carpenters and received a Gerudo pass, he can ride Epona through the Gerudo Fortress. What do the Gerudo think about Link's horse, Epona?

Answer: She must be stolen property

If Link talks to the owner of the horseback target range from Epona's saddle the first time he meets her, she will say something like this: "I don't know where you stole it from, but..." and will introduce her game. The Gerudo respect Link for sneaking around and freeing the captives, and seem to like having the hero around. (Losing the nosy carpenters doesn't bother them at all.)
10. When Link time travels for the Spirit Temple, he sees that wise old owl one last time as a child. Is the owl ever seen in the future?

Answer: Yes, he is clearly seen, but says nothing.

That pesky old owl had to make one last appearance before flapping off into time. Kaepora Gaebora (that's his name, and I even checked the spelling!) flies by overhead while Sheik is teaching Link the Requiem of Spirit. I'm personally not too fond of the owl- he's a lousy singer, and his head looks better upside down.

The bird was an important character in "Link's Awakening," giving Link basic directions on the adventure. He was carried into "Ocarina of Time" and has a few parts in "Majora's Mask."
11. Link finally makes it to the Desert Colossus as an adult, but must return to it as a child to get anywhere. When child Link enters the Temple, he meets Nabooru and makes a deal with her. What does she promise him?

Answer: Something good

The first thing she wants to know is whether he's one of Ganondorf's spies. She hates the villain and wants to get rid of him. She planned to sneak in and find the Silver Gauntlets, but she can't get through the crawlspace. Young Link, however, is just the right size (imagine that, he is the Hero of Time, isn't he?) She promises him something good for getting her the gauntlets and says he can't keep the items because they are too big for him. Fortunately, he'll grow into them in seven years, because Nabooru is captured by Koume and Kotake.

When Link beats the Spirit Temple, Nabooru gives him the Spirit Medallion but wishes she could give him what she promised- a kiss? Link has all the girls after him. :)
12. Link dissolves the face of a huge statue using the Mirror Shield, and walks in on the two Gerudo hags and their minion. When the twins set the Iron Knuckle on Link, what unusual act does it do before the battle?

Answer: It snaps its fingers for an ax.

It stands up from the seat, music picks up for the battle, and here we go- but wait, it doesn't have a weapon! No problem, a quick snap of the fingers puts the ax right in its gauntlets. Nice! This Iron Knuckle turns out to be brainwashed Nabooru. Before she can escape or be rescued, the wicked sisters zap her out of sight.

The scene after this battle is one of two scenes played on the title screen if you wait long enough. The other video at the title shows Ganondorf riding his horse through the flames of burning Hyrule, a scene connected to Link's history and his mother's death.
13. The twin Gerudo hags use fire and ice against Link. Which witch does which?

Answer: Kotake/Ice and Koume/Fire

Just remember their names in order, Koume/Kotake, and you'll get it every time (you will almost always think of the powers in Fire and Ice order). These bitter hags seem to be the only Gerudo truly loyal to Ganon, for Nabooru was planning a rebellion, and seven years later the Gerudo let Link tramp around their fortress at will.

The 400 year old twins (one claims to be 380 in an amusing dialogue) quite possibly raised Ganondorf. Well, it would explain a lot!
14. Link can beat the Gerudo Training grounds and receive the Ice Arrows as soon as he gets the Gerudo pass. He doesn't have to haul out that massive grey rock at the entrance, but what is behind it anyway?

Answer: Key

If you have been plagued with that one missing key of the Gerudo Training Grounds, here it is. If you make a careful detour in the cave system, you can skip one of the locked doors and have enough small keys to get to the ice arrows without this one. (Before you start unlocking doors, return to the chamber with lion's head doors, and enter the center door. If you do it right, you start inside the key/door maze and you find another key by climbing through a fake ceiling.) If you forget what you are doing and use up all the keys, you don't have to start over at the Deku Tree, just wait until you return with the silver gauntlets.
15. Once Link has cleared all the Temples and received all six medallions, he really must find Zelda. Where has Zelda been hiding from Ganondorf all these years?

Answer: In disguise

Sheik is Zelda, and she has not been hiding in any particular place. Impa carried Zelda away from danger seven years ago, and the princess learned the ways of Impa's people, the Sheikah. (Their ways include that odd habit of blinding people instead of saying a courteous goodbye.) Zelda was waiting for Link to return, and probably had a vision allowing her to be there when he did.

She has been keeping up with the events in Hyrule, and the Triforce of Wisdom definitely qualifies her to give Link advice.

When you play the game a second time, all her talk with the music lessons becomes a little more clear.
16. Link carries the Triforce of Courage in one of his hands. Which piece of the main triangle is it?

Answer: The bottom right one

The Triforce of Courage is the bottom right piece, and Link wears it in his dominant hand, his left. Zelda holds the Triforce of Wisdom, the bottom left, and wears it in her dominant hand, her right (she plays the harp and throws flash grenades with her right.) Ganondorf owns the top piece and often uses his right hand, but can wield a scimitar in both hands.

When any two Triforce pieces are brought together, they resonate or call to each other- the resonation being strongest when all three are near each other. Holding the Triforce of Power apparently makes Ganon immortal, otherwise he would have died when Link tried to kill him! (That's what usually happens when you put a sword through someone's head.) If the Triforce of Power can do it for Ganondorf, what about the other two?
17. During what half of the battle with Ganon (the transformed monster) can Link roll under him?

Answer: Both

Link can roll right under the monster and cut at his tail. It is not as dangerous as it sounds, as many gamers probably know. Charge straight at him and don't flinch when he swings those big blades of his- his massive form has terrible timing. Just keep going and roll when Link gets close enough. (It might take some practice.) Even though Ganon tries to speed it up in the second half, he just can't hit Link straight on. Hit the tail once and get out of there, because when Ganon recovers, he whips around fast. Run to get clear and wait for him to come straight on before doing it again.
18. Link thrusts the Master Sword into Ganon, and Zelda calls upon the sages to seal the villain into the Sacred Realm. What are Ganondorf's last words as he is pitched into the void?

Answer: "As long as the Triforce of Power is in my hand..."

(Recently corrected) The full speech (written down as fast as possible while my sister played) is this: "You... Curse you, sages! Curse you, Zelda! Curse you, Link! Someday, when this seal is broken, that's when I will exterminate your descendants! As long as the Triforce of Power is in my hand..." (he says it slowly, and in all caps except for Link's name) So...he's probably going to hold a grudge, right? In "Link to the Past," the story-line is primarily about saving the descendants of the sages (who all happen to be girls) because Ganondorf is trying to break the seal their ancestors placed on the sacred realm. Since the Triforce makes Ganondorf immortal until it is removed, Link has a serious dilemma on his mind.
19. Ganon has been defeated and sealed into the Sacred Realm. At the end of "Ocarina of Time," where is the celebration held?

Answer: On Lon Lon Ranch

Watch the credits! Wait for the aftershow! The creators of the game worked hard to get all this detail into it, and they didn't stop at Zelda's goodbye. The aftershow has nearly every character in the game partying at Lon Lon Ranch, even Demi and Biggoron. Most surprising to me was King Zora. With all the trouble it took him just to move over, I don't know how he got to the Ranch (magic!).

The only ones absent are Deku Sprout and a fairy (Navi in the future?). The five sages rescued by Link return from the Chamber of Sages and set down on Death Mountain.
20. What is the very last animated scene of "Ocarina of Time"?

Answer: Zelda and Link in the garden

Once Ganondorf is banished, Zelda plays the Ocarina to send Link to the past. Credits roll showing places in Hyrule, empty of all characters but the Deku Sprout and a fairy. Next it shows Epona running to the Ranch, the Party, and the Sages' return to Hyrule.

The music changes and Link returns to the Temple of Time. Navi flies away through the window, possibly to return to Kokiri Village. Link then walks away from the sword, bells ring in the background, and the Nintendo logo appears across the sword. If you keep watching, an anxious child Zelda peers through the garden window then turns to find Link watching her.

This is THE END, and not quite happily ever after. (On the N64 version, if you waited longer, it played your Scarecrow's Song.) :D
