Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dune" was published by Virgin Games, the same company that published "Dune II", but while "Dune II" was developed by Westwood, which French company developed the first game?

Answer: Cryo

Cryo were also responsible for the highly-acclaimed adventure game "KGB" (AKA "Conspiracy"), which is similar in many ways to the interface in "Dune". They made adventure games mostly for the European market, and went defunct in 2002.
One of Cryo's best successes in game design is the music they compose for their games - "Dune" has one of the most captivating scores written for a computer game, and the score for "Dune II" was based upon it to great extent.
2. As Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto Atreides, your tasks at the beginning of the game are mostly leaning towards exploration of the area around your castle. What is the name of this castle, sitting close to the equator of the desert planet?

Answer: Arakeen

Castle Arakeen was given to the Atreides family by the Emperor, so that they may begin their own SPICE-production efforts on Dune. Your home is a large one, with many rooms, and many secrets to reveal.
3. The Fremen, Dune's not-so-native people, live in "sietches" - communal caves, out in the desert. The game's designers had their own interpretation of what a Sietch would look like, which was unexplained in the novel. What do sietches look like in this game?

Answer: Dead sand worms

The decision that sietches were in fact constructed in the belly of a dead sand worm is quite interesting, considering the close relationship between the Fremen and the Worm. Heck, everything on Dune has some relationship to the Worm.
4. Some Fremen are eager to work for you right from the start - you seem to have an uncanny charisma about you. You can recruit two work groups right away to mine spice for you. There's another group you can visit in the first days of the game, but they won't work for you until later. What is the important duty they can do once you manage to recruit them?

Answer: Spice Prospecting

While you can later do all the rest too, at first what you really need is Spice Prospectors. There's only one troop that can do it, too, so you have to watch out and keep them away from enemy lines. These guys go wherever you tell them to, and they check the planet's surface for spice. It's better to mine where there's lots of spice, of course.
5. Your mother, Jessica Atreides, has wonderful and mysterious powers which have been growing inside you as well. Together you can go scour the palace for any traps or secret rooms, using these special powers. What is the first room you'll discover in this method?

Answer: The Comms Chamber

The Comms Chamber comes first, of course, and with it come the first demands for spice shipments from the Emperor, so you might want to take a few days to gather spice and grow in strength before you go looking for secret rooms. Once you find the Comms Chamber, you'll also meet Thufir Hawat, your father's most intelligent and cunning adviser.

The Stillsuit chamber is not a secret room - it's just empty until you can find someone to make stillsuits for you.
6. There are several discrepancies between the plot of the novel and the plot of the computer game. Which of these is NOT such a discrepancy?

Answer: In the novel, the Fremen aren't at all eager to work for Paul Atreides when they first meet him.

Actually, the Fremen are impressed with Paul Atreides from the first moment of their encounter - they know, deep in their hearts, that he is the messiah that was sent to deliver them. In the game this isn't so apparent at first, but they work tirelessly for him nonetheless.
7. There are several characters that can be taken along with Paul Atreides as he travels around the planet, two at a time at most. Which of the following characters will ALWAYS refuse to leave the palace if you tried taking him/her along?

Answer: Duncan Idaho

Duncan Idaho is in charge of the spice-mining operation - you can approach him to get reports about current stocks, payments that must be made, and shipments that must be sent to the Emperor.
Gurney Halleck is the first adviser you can take along ANYWHERE, and later you'll need to fly him out to one of the sietches where your military units are training so that he can help them with his expertise. Stilgar and Chani will follow you wherever you go, too.
8. You will often find unused equipment in sietches you visit. You can distribute this equipment as you see fit, and even buy new equipment from local smugglers. Spice-Mining troops can only use Spice Harvesters and Ornithopters, but Military troops can use a wider range of equipment. What is the third level of weaponry equipment you can get them?

Answer: Weirding Modules

Kris are first, then Rifles, and then Weirding Modules - Weirding Modules are devices that enhance thoughts about destruction and make them become a real force.
Atomics are a must-have! You'll need lots of them if you want to finish the game, so don't let any troops bearing Atomics go on foolish attacks or to scout out enemy fortifications on their own. A unit with Atomics is quite powerful, but by the time you get them - so's the enemy.
9. Until such time that you gain a different mode of transport, the Ornithopter will be the vehicle that zips you across the wide expanses of planet Arakkis. While its description in the novel was rather vague, the game's designers gave it an interesting visual interpretation. Which real-world animal does this design most closely resemble?

Answer: Dragonfly

The Ornithopter is a kind of helicopter that beats its wings very quickly to stay aloft, just like most insects do. Its particular wide-spread wing assembly and forward-leaning fuselage give it an appearance resembling a dragonfly.
10. The Harkonnen are the chief villains in both the novel and the computer game. They're ruthlessly evil and devious, and will stop at nothing to defeat the Atreides family, their sworn enemies. To end the game, you must defeat all Harkonnen fortresses and assault their main castle. Where is this castle located?

Answer: Close to the north pole, north of the Atreides' castle Arrakeen

You must surround their palace with at least 10,000 troops, arm them all with Atomic weapons, and gather all your advisers in a sietch adjacent to the enemy palace. Hard stuff!
