Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This video game character's eyes are extremely sinister in that they glow and don't have visible pupils. Released as an episodic series in 2016 by Telltale Games, what is the name of this game and character about a man named Bruce that leads a dual life of fighting crime in a costume and being a billionaire after the death of his parents?

Answer: Batman

Renown for their story-driven episodic games, other series developed by Telltale Games include "The Walking Dead", "The Wolf Among Us", "Tales from the Borderlands", "Game of Thrones", and "Minecraft". The "Batman" series puts the player in control of both the caped crusader and Bruce Wayne depending on the particular scene. Through the choice of different actions and verbal responses certain events will take place meaning that multiple endings of each episode are possible.

When interrogating enemies Batman's glowing, pupil-void eyes are ever apparent.
2. In 1985 this video game princess was much sought after by Mario who would go from castle to castle in search for her. Maybe his love was due to her mesmerizing blue eyes and long eyelashes. What was the name of this princess of Mushroom Kingdom in "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: Princess Toadstool

In 1985 Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." revolutionized the platform genre through its level design. After completing earlier levels in the game the following message would be received: "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" Princess Toadstool was eventually renamed Princess Peach starting with "Super Mario 64" and she has appeared as a playable character in numerous games including the "Mario Kart", "Mario Party" and "Super Smash Bros." series.
3. A genetic experimentation project gone horribly wrong affects a scientist in "Resident Evil 2". Eventually the G-virus causes him to develop a huge moving eyeball where his right shoulder should be. What is the name of this scientist who goes through five stages of bodily changes before being killed by a bomb on a train?

Answer: William Birkin

Of all the creepy "Resident Evil" characters I was always taken aback by Birkin's transformed body with a huge claw and massive shoulder eye. Over the course of the "Resident Evil" series Birkin's backstory tells about a highly capable virologist who turns against the Umbrella Corporation after he is not chosen for a promotion.
4. Our next video game character had large, narrowly-spaced eyes but he is likely more well known for his elongated nose. First unveiled in 1982, what is the name of this orange character that jumped around on a pyramid of blocks?

Answer: Q*bert

Q*bert was the title character in the game "Q*bert" which had players jumping around on a pyramid to try and make every block the same color. Once this is completed the player would advance to the next level. If you were not successful Q*bert would typically let you know his frustration by uttering the nonsense string of characters "@!#?@!". Q*bert was certainly an odd looking character with his big, close together eyes, round shape, and lack of arms.
5. In 1992 the character of Sonya Blade appeared for the first time in what would become an extremely popular arcade fighting series. Sporting piercing blue eyes and a strong physique, in what video game did Sonya Blade deliver a fatal blow with a move called the Fire Kiss?

Answer: Mortal Kombat

Of the seven playable characters in the first "Mortal Kombat" game Sonya Blade was the only female. Part of the backstory of the character describes her as being a soldier in a Special Forces Unit called Earthrealm and her primary combat moves involve speed and kicks. Other notable characters from the "Mortal Kombat" series include Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion.
6. Possibly one of the most intimidating characters in video games could be the main character in the "God of War" series. He has a long scar running above and below his right eye and his left eye has a thick, red tattoo running above and below. What is the name of this green-eyed character that first appeared in 2005?

Answer: Kratos

Kratos is a Greek demigod known as the "Ghost of Sparta" and he functions as the main playable character in the "God of War" series across different PlayStation generations. He has a tragic backstory in which he kills his family after being tricked by Ares but eventually he kills Ares thus making him the 'God of War'.

The first three main games in the "God of War" series were critically acclaimed with all of them receiving Metacritic aggregate review scores of at least 92.
7. Although you don't necessarily see the characters eyes, in first-person shooter games the camera shows on screen what your character sees. In which first-person shooter released in 2000 and developed by Rare do you take on the role of Joanna over 17 missions as she attempts to stop a conspiracy by dataDyne?

Answer: Perfect Dark

"Perfect Dark" was first released for the Nintendo 64 and it received critical and commercial success. Playing through the eyes of Joanna Dark, there are numerous weapons available in the game including my all-time favorite from any game the Farsight XR-20 that allows you to shoot through walls.
8. Sometimes in video games characters will have devices that enhance their ocular capabilities. In which game does your character have a 'Solid Eye' which looks like an eyepatch but is able to distinguish friends from foes, has a night and binocular vision mode, and shows a map of the surroundings?

Answer: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" was released in 2008 for the PlayStation 3 and it was the sixth main game in the acclaimed "Metal Gear" video game series. The protagonist of the game is known as Solid Snake who is trying to save both himself from accelerated aging and the world from civil wars brought about by PMCs (Private Military Companies).
9. One popular video game character with deep green eyes that are usually hidden behind glasses first appeared in 1998. In which video game series do you play as Dr. Gordon Freeman who is a theoretical physicist that must battle evil creatures after a teleportation experiment goes wrong?

Answer: Half-Life

The failed experiment conducted by Dr. Gordon Freeman creates a rift in the space-time continuum causing aliens from another dimension to invade his research facility. The main plot of "Half-Life" involves trying to escape from the facility with handy weapons like a crowbar.
10. "Beyond Good & Evil" was released in 2003 and its protagonist had long, narrow eyes with thick eyelashes. Who was this gem of a character that was both a photojournalist and a skilled martial artist?

Answer: Jade

As described by the game's developers, the female character of Jade was designed to have a "girl next door" look and altruistic motives to help displaced children. "Beyond Good & Evil" was released in 2003 and it employed a third-person perspective with elements of puzzle-solving and stealth.
