Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Excluding Flying types themselves, what is the only type of Pokemon that has not had Flying as one of their types (up to "SoulSilver/HeartGold")?

Answer: Fighting

Oddly enough types that would normally not go with Flying such as Electric, Rock, and Ground have all had at least one Flying Pokemon. A Rock/Flying Pokemon is Aerodactyl which can be revitalized from Old Amber. In "Pokemon Red/Blue" you get the Old Amber from a man at the Pewter City Museum.

Then you can revitalize the Old Amber and whatever other fossil you got from Mt. Moon (a Dome Fossil producing a Kabuto or a Helix Fossil producing an Omanyte) at Cinnabar Island. For a long time the only Ground/Flying type was Gligar until it got another evolution in the Sinnoh region, Gliscor. Gligar would evolve into Gliscor if it was holding a Razor Fang and it was evolved at night.

In the same way Sneasel would evolve into Weavile if it was holding a Razor Claw and was evolved at night.

The Ghost/Flying type was introduced in the Sinnoh region in the form of Drifloon and Drifblim. Drifloon, much like Lapras in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" and "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" only appears on Fridays.

It appears outside the Valley Windworks, near Floaroma City after ejecting Team Galactic. In the original "Pokemon Red/Blue" the three legendary birds were the only variations of Fire, Ice, and Electric types that were also Flying types. Zapdos still retains its title but Articuno is not the only Ice/Flying type as Delibird is also an Ice/Flying type and Moltres shares its Fire/Flying type with Ho-oh.
2. There are two Pokemon than in a sense can become pure Flying types. One is Arceus when it's holding a Sky Plate. What is the only other Pokemon that can become a pure Flying type? Do not take into consideration any moves or the ability Trace.

Answer: Kecleon

This odd ColorSwap Pokemon that resembles a chameleon was introduced in the Hoenn region. If Kecleon is hit with a move it becomes the type of the move it was hit with. So if Kecleon was hit with a Wing Attack it would no longer become a Normal type but a Flying type. Most beginning Flying types such as Pidgey, Starly, and Taillow are Normal/Flying. Flying types, have yet to become a separate type as they have always been paired with another type.

Some examples are Water/Flying Pokemon Wingull and Pelliper, Psychic/Flying Pokemon Natu and Xatu and Dark/Flying Pokemon Murkrow and Honchkrow.
3. Your rival, in Pokemon "Red/Blue" has always had how many Flying types no matter which starter you choose?

Answer: it differs depending on which starter you choose

Your rival is pretty cocky saying he's assembled teams to beat any opponent. Well he has at least two of the same type on any team. One Pokemon that will always be on his team is Normal/Flying type Pidgeot. Depending on what starter Pokemon you chose at the beginning determines whether he'll have more Flying types or not.

He won't have any more Flying types if your starter was Charmander. However, he will have two Psychic types Alakazam and Exeggutor. If you chose Squirtle as your starter he'll have another Flying Pokemon.

In this case it's Water/Flying type Gyarados. If you chose Bulbasaur as your starter your rival made a huge mistake as one half of his team are Flying types as he will have Pidgeot, Gyarados, and Charizard. In "Pokemon Gold/Silver" he was known as Blue and had the same team in "Pokemon Red/Blue" minus the starters.

His team was Pidgeot, Rhydon, Alakazam, Gyarados, Exeggutor and Arcanine. His team was changed slightly the second time you fought him at the Indigo Plateau in "Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen" for the Game Boy Advance.

He got rid of his Pidgeot and his Rhydon and replaced them with Fighting/Bug type Heracross and Rock/Dark type Tyranitar. His team changed slightly in "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" as well. Instead of an Alakazam he has a Machamp. The rest of his team was the same as it was in "Pokemon Gold/Silver." In the rematch against him in "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver," he replaces his Gyarados with a Tyranitar and has evolved his Rhydon into a Rhyperior.
4. Gyarados, unbeknownst to some, is actually a Water/Flying type. Of the options below, what is the only way to teach Gyarados a Flying type move?

Answer: evolve it from a Magikarp caught on the Winner's Path Pokewalker course

Gyarados is a widely used Pokemon making an appearance in every Pokemon adventure game, along with its pre-evolved form Magikarp, since "Pokemon Red/Blue" for the Game Boy all the way up to "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" for the DS. However, it is kind of confusing that it can only learn one Flying type move. Gyarados learns Water, Ice, Normal, Dark, and Dragon type moves.

Many people think that Gyarados is a Dragon type, or at least part Dragon, because Lance, Drake, and Clair have all used Gyarados as one of their Pokemon.

The only Flying type move that Gyarados can learn is Bounce. It cannot learn Fly or any of the TM Flying type moves such as Pluck. Bounce is relatively close to the move Fly by disappearing for one move then attacking on the second turn.

The differences between the two moves are numerous though. Fly can be used in the field to fly to any town or city you've been to before, Bounce cannot. Fly also a higher accuracy, higher attack power, and more PP than Bounce.

However, Bounce has a 30% chance of paralyzing the target where as Fly's only addition is that when a Pokemon is flying, Gust causes more damage. Gyarados can learn Bounce one of two ways the first is to catch a Magikarp on the Winner's Path Pokewalker course. This Magikarp of course knows its signature move Splash which does absolutely nothing but it also knows Bounce and holds a Wacan Berry which reduces the damage of a super-effective Electric attack which would be good with Gyarados since both of its types are weak to Electric. The other way to learn Bounce is to have it taught to you by a move Tutor.
5. With the inclusion of two new series since his first appearance, Falkner the Violet City Gym Leader has some new tricks up his sleeve in "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver". The TM that he gives you for beating him is considered what type of move?

Answer: Status

Yes, every Gym Leader gives you a TM by besting them in battle in "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver." This was not in the case in the original "Pokemon Gold/Silver" as the only Gym Leader in the Kanto region to give you a TM was Erika. In the original "Pokemon Gold/Silver" Falkner gave you the TM for Mud-Slap a Ground-type move that always lowered an opponent's accuracy by one level.

In "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" he gives you a new TM move called Roost, a move that was introduced in the Sinnoh region. Roost is the Flying-types version of Recover restoring half of its HP.

However, since the Pokemon is no longer flying but roosting it nullifies its Flying type. Falkner's Pokemon do not change though as he still uses a Pidgey and a Pidgeotto.

In the anime series, Falkner had a Hoothoot, a Pidgeot, and a Dodrio.
6. Which Flying type Pokemon is the only one that can learn the most powerful special Flying type move?

Answer: Lugia

Aeroblast is the most powerful special type move of Flying type moves but it is not the most powerful move. Both physical attacks Brave Bird and Sky Attack have a higher power than Aeroblast. Lugia was introduced as the main legendary Pokemon for "Pokemon Silver" even though players of "Pokemon Gold" could capture it at a higher level after visiting Pewter City and getting the Silver Wing.

In the same way, players of "Pokemon Silver" could catch Ho-oh a Fire/Flying type at a higher level by getting the Rainbow Wing from Pewter City.

Much like Lugia, Ho-oh had a move that only it knew called Sacred Fire. Lugia, despite its habitat in the Whirl Islands, is a Psychic/Flying type. Before returning in "Pokemon SoulSilver" Lugia made another star appearance in "Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness" for the Gamecube.

However, in the game it was known as XD001 which was a code name for the first ever Shadow Pokemon that could not be purified by any means. However, if you put Shadow Lugia in the purification chamber, filled with nine Pokemon with maximum tempo, eventually Lugia will be returned back to normal.

The main boss Greevil will then retaliate with his team of Tauros, Exeggutor, Rhydon and the three original legendary flying types Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. All of these six Pokemon are Shadow Pokemon but not to the extent of Lugia's Shadow transformation.
7. While Falkner used Mud-Slap as his TM of choice in "Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal", Winona was the Flying Gym Leader in "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald" and used a different choice TM move. What was unique about the move that was in the TM that she gives you?

Answer: the attack will never miss

Her signature move was Aerial Ace a new move introduced in the third generation of Pokemon. Aerial Ace is also not just limited to Flying types as it is a fairly diverse move being able to be learned by many Pokemon. Whereas Falkner was only using the Pidgey series, Winona had a much more diverse team of flyers including Pelipper, Altaria, Skarmory, Swablu, and Tropius in her "Emerald" team. So where as Falkner only had Normal/Flying types, Winona had in addition to Flying types, Normal, Water, Steel, Grass, and Dragon types at her disposal.
8. In "Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen" for the Game Boy Advance the legendary bird Pokemon Moltres can be found on the top of Mt. Ember. Where could you find Moltres in "Pokemon Red/Blue" for the Game Boy?

Answer: Victory Road

The three legendary bird Pokemon Zapdos (Electric/Flying), Articuno (Ice/Flying) and Moltres (Fire/Flying) made their first appearance in "Pokemon Red/Blue" for the Game Boy and have reappeared in many other Pokemon games. Some of these include "Pokemon Platinum" version where they are randomly encountered after getting the National Pokedex and talking to Professor Oak in Eterna City.

While Moltres moved locations between Victory Road and Mt. Ember, Zapdos and Articuno remained in the same place. Zapdos resides near the end of the Power Plant near Cerulean City and Articuno resides in the Seafoam Islands between Fuschia City and Cinnabar Island.
9. There is only one Legendary Flying type that was first found in the Sinnoh region but you need a specific item to obtain it. Where is this specific item found?

Answer: Floaroma Town

Many of you may be wondering what Legendary Flying type is in the Sinnoh region. Well it's unique as that the Pokemon I'm describing cannot be found in "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl" but only in "Pokemon Platinum." Shaymin, normally a Grass type, can be turned into a Grass/Flying type during the daytime with the help of a Gracidea Flower which can only be found in Floaroma Town.

This is known as Shaymin's Sky Form and can only undergo this change in "Pokemon Platinum" much like Giratina can only go in its Origin Form in the game. Shaymin can be obtained by getting a special item called Oak's Letter from a special event. If you use Oak's Letter at the shiny stone tablet near the end of Route 224 a very long path full of flowers will appear and Shaymin will be at the end.

This is the route that is at the end of the second way through Victory Road where you meet Maylene.
10. You just recently obtained a Togekiss and want to give it a total move makeover. You are going to use four Heart Scales to teach it the four moves that it can learn. Using this technique, Togekiss' new move set can be super-effective against the majority of its weaknesses.

Answer: True

Togekiss is a Normal/Flying type and has a weakness to Ice, Rock, and Electric. Togetic's base move set consists of ExtremeSpeed, Sky Attack, Air Slash, and Aura Sphere. Aura Sphere, a Fighting type move, is the move that will be super-effective against the majority of its weaknesses. Both Ice types and Rock types, for the most part, are weak to Fighting type moves.

In "Pokemon Platinum" Togekiss was one of the Pokemon used by Cynthia the Sinnoh League Champion. As evidenced by it's name Togekiss is the evolved form of Togetic, which is also a Flying type. Togetic can be obtained by having a strong relationship with a Togepi, and Togekiss can be obtained by using a Shiny Stone on Togetic.
