Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While escaping from South Figaro with Celes, you must make your way through an underground passage to leave the city. Which relic can you find in the passage's hidden room?

Answer: Ribbon

Most people walk right past this one! Enter the underground passage after flipping the secret switch on the clock in the rich man's house. Open the first treasure chest you see and walk up, then right. Walk along the walls and you'll discover a secret path that will lead to some stairs. The stairs take you to a room where you'll find two chests. One contains an Ether, the other an X-Potion. Below the chest containing the X-Potion is a hidden chest that holds a Ribbon.

The Ribbon protects against all negative status ailments except instant death. Not to mention everyone can equip it. Very useful indeed!
2. Only two characters can equip this relic. Which is it?

Answer: Fake Mustache

Fake Mustache is another useful item. To find it, fly to the triangular island in the northeast corner of the map in the World of Ruin. Fight a ZoneEater and allow it to inhale your entire party. You'll actually find yourself in the monster's belly--along with some rare items to boot! The Fake Mustache can be found here.

It upgrades Relm's Sketch command to Control. With this technique, Relm can render an enemy completely incapacitated, allowing her to use all of the enemy's own attacks against it. This is a convenient way to unlock many Lores, which is useful for Strago.

Which other character can use this handy relic? Gogo the mimic, of course.
3. Which relic can be stolen from Dadaluma?

Answer: Jewel Ring

Dadaluma is the boss you'll face when climbing a building in Zozo. To make quick work of him, have Celes turn him into a powerless weakling by casting Imp. This will allow Locke to steal the Jewel Ring with no problem.

The in-game description states that the Jewel Ring protects its wearer from Dark and Petrify. Due to a glitch, however, it only protects against Petrify. In the Game Boy Advance version, the relic intentionally prevents petrifaction only.
4. Execute an elaborate sequence of events, and the wounded soldier in Mobliz will reward you with a rare relic. Do you remember which one?

Answer: Tintinabar

To nab this useful item, talk to the wounded soldier who is bedridden in Mobliz. You'll discover that he has a girlfriend in Maranda with whom he has been communicating via carrier pigeons, but is now too injured to write. Talk to him to hear his story, then head to the house with a mailbox and bird outside. Pay the man inside 500 GP to send a letter to Maranda. Then, go to the relics store and sleep in the bed there for free. Wake up, talk to the soldier again, and he'll have another letter to deliver. Repeat the process, and eventually, he'll bestow you with the Tintinabar.

It has the opposite effect of poison--its wearer's HP gradually increases with each step you take! You can also get it by impressing Emperor Gestahl during the banquet sequence, or by winning it at the Colosseum.

While you may not find "Tintinabar" in a dictionary, you will find a similar term, "tintinnabulum," which means "a small bell." The relic goes by this name in the Game Boy Advance version.
5. Memento Ring has identical effects as which other relic?

Answer: Safety Bit

The Memento Ring's in-game description reads, "Departed mom's love protects against fatal attacks." Sure enough, the ring's wearer is immune to instant death. Only Relm and Shadow can equip this, and there are only two in the entire game. The first one comes initially equipped on Relm. The second can be found in her house in Thamasa. Go upstairs to the bedroom, walk along the walls and find a hidden chest containing a second Memento Ring!

Safety Bit, meanwhile, can be found in a variety of places. You can find it in the Fanatics' Tower, or you can steal it from Doom in Kefka's Tower. Trixter, Critic, White Dragon, Woolly and Boxed Set are all enemies which can be transformed into Safety Bits with the Raganork Esper.
6. The Esper Ragnarok's summoned attack, Metamorph, transforms enemies into items. Metamorph might turn a Critic into what relic?

Answer: Pod Bracelet

Critics are baddies you'll find during Cyan's dream sequence. Ragnarok can turn them into Pod Bracelets, Cure Rings or, as mentioned in the previous question, Safety Bits.

Pod Bracelets cast both "Safe" and "Shell" on its wearer when his or her HP is in critical condition.
7. Near the beginning of the game, Banon asks Terra if she will join the Returners' fight against the Empire. If you reject his offer three times, he will actually reward you! Which relic does your stubbornness earn?

Answer: Genji Glove

One of the most popular relics in the game! You can get it one of two ways in the Returners' hideout. First, you can say "no" to Banon's plea three times. Second, you can say "no" once, walk back to the storage room and receive a Genji Glove from the Returner walking around. Otherwise, if you say "yes" to Banon, he'll give you the Gauntlet relic, which doubles battle power and increases defense by 5.

The Genji Glove allows your character to hold two weapons, one with each hand. The relic's name may reference the prominent Japanese bloodline from around the ninth century A.D., the Minamoto clan. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the "Seiwa Genji" was a branch of the Minamoto family tree, and was mostly made up of Japanese warriors, aristocrats and shogun (highly ranked officials in the military). The name "Genji" also appears in the title of noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji," which the Encyclopaedia describes as possibly being the first novel ever written.
8. Marvel Shoes render several helpful status effects. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Reflect

One of the most useful relics! In addition to the aforementioned effects, Marvel Shoes also prevent Slow and Seizure ailments.

They can only be found in the Colosseum by wagering a Rename Card and fighting a Doom Dragon. A Rename Card is used to--what else?--rename your characters. It can be obtained by betting an Elixir and beating a Cactrot at the Colosseum.
9. If you travel to the Colosseum and wager a Crystal Orb, you'll be pitted against a Borras. If victorious, which relic will you win?

Answer: Gold Hairpin

The Gold Hairpin halves the amount of MP its wearer consumes when casting spells. Borras is an easy enough adversary in the Colosseum, so long as your levels are moderately high.

Crystal Orbs are fewer and farther between, however. Gold Hairpins, while uncommon, are easier to find. I recommend holding onto a Crystal Orb, if you have one. It increases your character's maximum MP by 50%.
10. An easy one to finish. One of the best relics in the game, the Exp. Egg, can be obtained in Daryl's Tomb after carving an inscription on the blank headstone. What must the inscription read?

Answer: "The world is square"

Examine the four headstones in Daryl's Tomb and return to the blank stone. You must enter the groups of letters in the following order: "ERAU," "QSSI," "DLRO," and "WEHT." Reversed, the inscription reveals Daryl's epitaph: "The world is square." This will open a secret passage to the Exp. Egg, which doubles the Experience Points its wearer obtains from each battle. Invaluable!

The significance of this epitaph is a hot debate topic among fans. Some speculate that it was Daryl's final, gruesome revelation while piloting her airship: if you push limits too far, you'll metaphorically fall off the face of the earth and meet your demise. Some believe that Daryl realized the Overworld Map is square-shaped by looking at it from above. The epitaph's final (and I believe most likely) purpose is simply to reference the game's developer, SquareSoft.
