Must people don't have that much gil in chapter 1. Alternatively, you could wait until chapter 3 and save one of the tourists in the sunken cave and get the Besaid Key from him for free.

Remedies are useful, but are rare to finds in shops until chapter 5. Remedies can become very useful to an alchemist.
